Recently Diagnosed and scared
Hi,
I was just diagnosed with LCIS on January 13th. I am scheduled tomorrow for a needle localization biopsy to make sure they don't find anything else. I am so scared right now but find a lot of comfort from everyone here sharing all that they have been through. I admire all the strength of each of you on this board and the endless support you all offer is amazing.

Of course you are scared. I think every one of us that was diagnosed with LCIS was scared when we were in your position. Its so easy to go to the worst case scenario. We all want to be prepared for whatever will happen.
But regardless of our worries, it won't change the outcome. In this recent paper, it said that The reported estimates of upgrade of diagnosis from LCIS to invasive breast cancer or DCIS ranged from 2% to 25%. The body of evidence was limited by its retrospective nature, risk of selection bias and poor generalisability to all women with LCIS at CNB. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24246610
So, although its hard to generalize to specific women, and the data is limited, overall the chances of it being diagnosed with 'something worse' was something like 2-25%. (This also may be affected by whether you have 'classic' LCIS or an LCIS variant. Often this can be found on your pathology report.) I sure wish these numbers were zero, but 2-25% is better than other numbers I can think of.
Remember, usually the worst case scenario doesn't happen - that's why its the worst case scenario. Hang in there. We're here for you no matter what happens.

Thank you Leif. I appreciate the link and all the information you have given. I'm not sure yet if I have Classic LCIS or a variant. I haven't received a copy of my report yet; but I have a follow up appt with my BS on 2/10 for my results of this second biopsy and will try and get all the information then. I am also requesting copies of my reports so I have them. Again thank you so much for the information and support.
Have a great night

You're very welcome. Although I don't know of any papers on the incidence of classic vs variant LCIS, I would guess its much more common to have classic LCIS than a variant LCIS. Classic LCIS was first described in the 1940s; variant LCIS was first proposed in roughly the late 1990s/early 2000s. Variant LCIS is thought to be more aggressive than classic LCIS.

Thank you Leaf for that information. I just had another biopsy on 1/31 and am scheduled to get my results on 2/10 with my breast surgeon. I am putting together my list of questions for him. Hoping they find nothing more than the LCIS and I really want to know if it is classic or a variant. Thanks again for all the information and support.
