Cold caps?

I'm new here...dx'd on Friday 1/30/15 with invasive ductal carcinoma and ductal carcinoma in situ Grade 2, and IDC and DCIS comodonecrosis. Meeting with surgeon on 2/13 to plan treatment. But I've been reading lots on here, and lurking, and posting a bit. My question is this...cold caps? I see people talk about them, I understand the concept, but cost? Insurance approved? Seems like a great idea, but I'm a special education teacher just scraping by. There's no way I'd be able to take on any more expense...this whole treatment thing is going to break me anyway.

Thanks in advance for answering my question.

Copperlisa, I am new here to, just got DX on Tuesday (1/27/15) with invasive ductal carcinoma, grade 2 I don't know the other markers yet. will see my oncologist in couple of days. I also want to know about those cold caps, I never heard of them. Not sure if I will need chemo, possibly, I have been sitting with this lump for a long while now, scary to think is still there growing. But one thing at a time! I first have to get through my appointment. I wish you the best, so far this site has helped me a lot. The participants in this site are very supportive and it just consoling  knowing I am not alone.  We are not alone.

    Sssonia,

You are right. We are not alone. We have this community. We have each other. We can look at the success stories and know that we too can succeed. Take one day at a time, and don't forget to ask for help when you need it!

Hi ladies, you are certainly not alone. There's a whole community of women here who have been right where you are. We understand. Cold caps really do work to save hair during chemotherapy. Search for the thread titled " Cold Cap Users Past and Present" on the discussion boards. Unfortunately Penguin Cold Caps (the brand most of us used) are expensive and generally not covered by insurance. There is a less expensive brand called Elastogel that some women have successfully used recently. There is also a nonprofit called the Cold Cap Assistance Project "CCAP" that has helped defray the cost for some women. It's worth checking out. Hope you don't need chemo, but if you do, please know that for most of us it was very manageable. I was able to continue working full time and because I kept my hair, most people at work had no idea I was being treated for breast cancer.
