I am getting my biopsy done tomorrow of a lump and I'm curious ... how many samples do they usually take? And do they sample the surrounding area? The reason I ask is the tissue attached to the lump is super hard, like it could be tissue covering something. On the us they said it looks like super dense tissue but its weird feeling and there is nothing like it in the other breast...and its the same after my period. Its not as easy to feel when my arm is up. Anyway, I am just curious. I just want to make sure everything is thoroughly checked to be safe.

I had a total of six cores taken, with a hollow core needle, ultrasound guided.  They did not sample the surrounding area as far as I know. My biopsy was ordered by my breast surgeon but performed by the radiologist, with a tech assisting on ultrasound.  The radiologist positioned the hollow core instrument and then snapped the collection aspect (which makes kind of a loud noise - FYI), so I believe they can collect from whatever part they wish to based on what they see.  I felt confident that because the radiologist was used to ultrasound imaging she knew what area to take cores from.  You might mention the surrounding tissue, which they should be able to image on the US if it was seen that way previously, to see if they want to collect from that area.  Also, I went to this appointment after work and drove myself home with a small ice pack in my bra.  I went to work the next day, using the small ice pack intermittently throughout the day - no problems.  I realize this might not be the case for everyone - but I had very little discomfort with the biopsy process.  Good luck!
