DCIS and Autoimmune disease

I was diagnosed with DCIS stage 0, Grade 3, ER+, PR+, on Thursday, January 22. It is not the diagnosis that bothers me as much as the research I have done since that suggests that radiation is not recommended for those who have active severe autoimmune diseases. I have spodylitis, tested HLA-B27+, HLA-B51+, ANA+, RH-Factor+, and I tested positive for Sjogren's. Basically all of the above is related to autoimmune disease. Has anyone on this site any information regarding treatment that includes radiation? I have an MRI scheduled for tonight--2130, to be exact! My appointment to see the surgeon is tomorrow at 1400 and she wants results before I get there. Apparently, she wants them so badly that someone is actually coming in to do the MRI at that late hour just for me. 2130 is past my bedtime. And I just got a cold.

On the flip side, I have read so many uplifting stories on this site that I just wanted to thank all of you for being so stong and understanding of each other. Truly I feel as if I am among friends. I send my heartfelt best wishes to all of those who feel they are floundering with decisions and shocking diagnoses. I will keep all of you in my prayers that each may find peace in their lives, however altered they my become.

    Hello rocknrollmom,

Interesting -- I was diagnosed with seronegative autoimmune disease (psoriatic arthritis without much psoriasis) about 1 year post radiation. Hindsight what it is, I figured I have had autoimmune disease(s) for a while - including IBD (ulcerative colitis) - the radiation threw my body in high inflammatory mode.

That said, it is a risk I would have assumed, even had I known -- we all have different tolerances relative to risk and benefits. I would get a second opinion on this though, I have not heard of the contraindication to radiation.

Because I am on a TNF-alpha inhibitor I am getting close follow-up by both my radiation oncologist and my dermatologist (because of a history of non-melanoma skin cancer).

Please let me know what your doctors say! (we have a group of us on the co-morbidities discussion thread!!).
