Breast mri showed rib concern
Hi everyone,
Never not a worry...I had a unilateral mastectomy 4 years ago and was stage 1A. No problems just rotate mammogram and mri every 6 months. I went for my mri on Friday and breast was fine, just small area on my one rib showed up.
I now must go for a bone scan and I am terrified. I don't know much about mri but I was wondering if anyone experiences the same issue?
Thank you
Lori

I don't have an answer for you Lori but wanted to bump the thread so hopefully someone will come along and help.

Interesting that you have twice a year imaging: perhaps there's a strong family history/genetic predisposition?
Thanks to your eagle-eyed radiologist, what was seen cannot be ignored. It must be investigated.
Keep in mind that MRI is known to be sensitive but not specific. In other words, it can pick up lots of things however not all of them are serious or important. Breast cancer does metastasize to bone (as well as liver, lung & brain) meaning that whatever shows up raises concern. Often there would be pain or another physical symptom such as fracture which is a sign that the disease has advanced.
I myself had a scan with radioactive injection followed by pictures 3 hours later a couple weeks ago. In my case, due to elevated serum calcium, we were worried that tumors were beginning to eat away at my skeleton. Nothing was found so now I get to see an endocrinologist to check my parathyroid. I also had a CT which revealed a couple of nodules in the chest and will have repeat studies every few months until we determine that they are stable. Hopefully, that will be the situation with your rib spot. Ask questions, get copies of your reports and labs, take notes and try to relax!

thank you for the info. I rotate mri and mammo because my stage 1a mass had some Ilc . Two months ago I was pushing a door in my basement open and I felt a pop in the rib area like I broke it. I cried it hurt so much. It hurt to touch for weeks.
Now that same area shows on mri. I will get the report tomorrow. Oncologist called me to ask if I had any injury. I told her about it and she said probably the reason but let's do a bone scan anyway.
She told me not to worry but how can I not?
