Anyone have a false negative bone scan?

Options

I had a bone scan in November 2013 that showed no abnormal areas of uptake. At the time, I was having pain in my thigh, left hip and lower back. Because the scan was negative, I went to see an orthopedic doctor who said I had a pulled quad muscle. Physical Therapy didn't help and the therapist didn't think it was a muscle problem. I had a second opinion that diagnosed it as an IT Band injury, which was followed by physical therapy and acupuncture. None of which helped. Next I was referred to a sports medicine doctor who said the pain was coming from my lower back. An MRI showed a slightly bulging disc and compressed nerve, although the doctor said 100 people could have the same image and no pain. In any case, off for more physical therapy, acupuncture, and various medications aimed at reducing the inflammation. I had two steroid injections, but had no relief. Meanwhile, the pain continued to get worse to the point that walking for more than a few minutes was painful. The only relief I got was from taking Ibuprofen 3 to 4 times a day. Finally, in October of last year, after consulting with two back surgeons, I had a microdiscectomy--a back surgery where they cut out a little of the disc to make more room for the nerve. It was day surgery and I was home for nearly 3 weeks after. Unfortunately, it hasn't helped. The pain is still there and probably worse than before. An MRI five weeks after the surgery shows that there is no more compression of the nerve.

I saw my back doctor yesterday, and he now wonders if it's a hip issue! I, of course, wonder if it could be something in the bones that was missed by the bone scan, but my onc says she doesn't think it's cancer because of the negative bone scan. I'm being sent to yet another back doctor for a "2nd" opinion--which is really the six doctor I've seen not counting my onc!

I'm beyond frustrated, and am wondering if anyone has had a negative bone scan that turned out to be wrong.

What a story: I hope you get relief soon, somehow. Be sure to take the NSAID with food so your stomach doesn't develop problems also.

My bone scan earlier this month involved radioactive injection followed by pictures 3 hours later. I had CT during the waiting time. Nothing was found, which was great because now I get to see an endocrinologist who will investigate my parathyroid function in light of persistently elevated serum calcium levels.

With your possible "false negative" having been that long ago, is a repeat/update something you could ask about?
