Hello and thank you all for helping with my decision to go flat

Hello everyone, I just joined BCO and I wanted to make my first post a heartfelt "thank you" to all posters on this forum who have written about going flat after mastectomy. I just had a bilateral mastectomy 12 days ago, after a recurrence of DCIS less than 2 years after lumpectomy and radiation. I spent days researching options for reconstruction. My surgeon told me that the chances of capsular contraction with implants were high due to the prior radiation, and the thought of carving up other bits of myself for tissue flaps, and all the surgery that entails, was very unappealing to me. I looked at hundreds of online photos of reconstruction, and just concluded that, for me, there was too much uncertainty about the cosmetic outcome and that it was not worth the pain and potential complications of additional surgery. But I still felt very alone in making this decision, when there is soooo much information out there about recon, During one late tear-filled night, after Googling "flat after mastectomy," I came across this site, and Breastfree, and FlatandFabulous, and I got a great deal of comfort and affirmation from reading your stories, and your outlook on living without breasts. So, to all of you who have traveled this path, thank you, thank you. And I wanted to add that I find it very distressing that some surgeons pressure women to have recon. My BS, God bless her, asked me if I was interested in recon, and didn't bat an eyelash when I said no. I asked her to make me smooth and flat for the mastectomy, and she listened. She's a compassionate healer and an artist with her scalpel. I wish all doctors were as understanding.

Oops, I think I deleted my first post! D'oh. Here it is again.

Hey Susie,,, sorry you have joined our club but glad you have found us.   I'm Paget's and DCIS too.  We are sisters! Glad that you had a good surgeon who did not push for recon.  There is a lot of that about.

    Hi Susie,

Glad you found this forum and really happy for you that you had a surgeon who didn't pressure you to have reconstruction. Plus, how great that she gave you the smooth, flat result you asked for. I hope your recovery goes well. As you know, if any questions arise, there are lots of women here who will be happy to share their experiences.

So pleased to hear of your great outcome! It isn't often enough, that we hear of Surgeons who listen and follow the patient's wishes.

All the very best for a quick and uneventful recovery!

I haven't been around much since surgery, but I'd like to echo your sentiments, Susie! I'm so glad to hear there are some surgeons as compassionate as yours.

Even though I knew in my heart that I wanted to go flat, the outside pressures (mostly from my BS!) were enough to make me second-guess myself and finding like-minded people here and in those other outlets really made it easier to stick to my resolution. I've just joined the closed group for Flat & Fabulous on Facebook (was just following their public page before that).

Just wanted to say hi Susie. I'm new here to the forums and I haven't introduced myself. Am going for a bilateral mastectomy on the 6th of February and opted for no reconstruction. I'm 46 and have 4 kids ranging in age from 16 to 4.

Just been reading and soaking up information here.

Welcome ladies and good for you... I wish I knew then what I know now! I'm hoping to have my implants removed sometime in the next 30 to 60 days depending on schedules, pre-op etc. So really just stopping by to say hello and I'm happy you have made a decision that is so right for you. I cannot wait!!!

    Amy
