You go girl. Don't let anything stop you. This is just a blip in the road of life. We have all suffered some extreme losses but life goes on. Just do what you want to do and kick ass. Don't sit home thinking about this all the time. Distract yourself any way you can and know that in the end you are going to be OK. After my dx last week I felt awful, but did a lot of research, talked to a lot of people and saw that I am not in a very bad place. Just need some work to get through it. Sipping my vodka right now, know that I am going to be fine and so are you. Shirl

Actually I got up feeling that way today. Enough already I said to myself with the negative thoughts. Went and played bridge -- very distracting for me. Skipped the treadmill today -- tomorrow's another day. But to repeat I'm not going to let this stop me from doing what I want to do and need to do. Just came home and yes, sipped a vodka and cranberry and feel even better. One day at a time. My appt. is Friday with Dr. Klein at the Valley Hospital Breast Center and I am looking forward to what she has to say. My kids will be with me and also my two great loves who have passed. They will be with me in spirit.

my surgeon told me it was important not to curl up in a ball in the corner! that was when I asked if the gym was good for me! her answer, yes keep on going to the gym!

Green, usually the timeline is something like this:
Surgery, followed by chemo starting about 4/5 weeks later. Then a break of 3-4 weeks, radiation simulation, a week or two for computations and then 4-6 weeks of radiation.
If you don't have to do chemo, just deduct those weeks. If you're a candidate for intraoperative radiation, brachytherapy or a shortened course of radiation you could be done sooner.
If you're just looking at a lumpectomy without sentinel node or ALND the recovery's usually pretty fast, especially if you're fit (as you are). The SNB adds some healing time and the ALND is kind of a major pain, relatively speaking.
If you're fit and don't have to heft your bike too much you'll probably be able to participate in events pretty shortly. However, radiation does induce its own type of fatigue, particularly towards the end. Again, current advice is that staying active seems to decrease the fatigue, so that could be a great excuse to participate in rides as long as you listen carefully to your body.
It's definitely a pain not knowing how the year will play out; I struggle with that myself just about every day.

Thank you, Hopeful...Guessing I am looking at 6-8 months from now? Having an idea of the timeline helps me immensely. I am trying to narrow down my fears. Of course the biggest fear is that one of these crummy cells escaped and landed somewhere else. I can deal with the known, I stink with dealing with the unknown. Thanks for your kind words and advice.

I wanted to thank you for your advice and am in total agreement about the soup with tons of veggies and spinach. Been eating it last 5 days...lol YUM! UGH. I cannot find your msg, nor my partial answer?! Where did they go?

I don't eat much junk, just too much food...lol. But I have lost my appetite, and have to remember to eat these past few days. I will take advice and inspiration from you! Thank you.

Green, the big unknown of course is chemo. If you don't have to do that you could be through treatment pretty quickly, depending on the length of radiation.
I, too, lost my appetite completely after dx. I found it helpful to make a blender full of a green protein smoothie and keep a glass of it on my desk to sip on. It was about the only thing I could choke down for quite a while and, while I did lose weight I was able to keep up protein and veggie consumption. I still rely on that a lot, even in the middle of winter. (The upside it that clean up is minimal and so is shopping. It's a good thing my husband doesn't mind scrounging for his own dinner.)

Hopeful, Great idea about the smoothies...I have one of those Nutri-Bullets---going to make one for breakfast.
As far as the unknowns...I am so afraid of the MRI, itself...as well as the results. My mass was found on targeted US only, because of an area of focal asymmetry, and my right breast did not get US. (Not to mention any issues anywhere else.) Guess I have to just take it one step at a time and hope for the best.

hey green, I understand about loosing posts! I just lost mine to you`~thanks for liking my name! I came up with it as I was the oldest in spin when I started! I have to confess to changing up my exercise routine and do not do as much spin now~~Really since on an AL which can cause bone loss, I opted to do more weights and strength training. But now I am retired so I do have time~~
feel free to PM me if any questions but you will get through this!
by the way, I was working out for a couple of years with a guy who is working on his PHD in physical therapy as it relates to cancer survivors! He now works with CINJ on some programs. With your background that may be a direction for you in the future~~

Green, the MRI was no big deal for me but I think a lot depends on the facility. You lie face down and it's fairly comfortable. In my case I was heels toward the machine so even when the table moved into the machine I was pretty close to the entrance so I did not feel as enclosed as I had on a previous MRI.
It helps if they give you earplugs or a headset for music. I really didn't mind the experience and did not take any ativan, etc., before hand although I was told that I could. It also didn't take as long as they had said to allow; much of it was set up time. Good luck - and most of all, good results.
By the way, regarding smoothies - nutribullets are great from what I hear but I have also had very, very good results simply using my 20+ year old Osterizer blender. Once you figure out the best order for layering the greens, etc., it works out very well. I add this because many of us don't realize that a special machine is NOT necessarily needed in order to do protein drinks or smoothies. I think I could even juice from that machine if I wanted to. At any rate, enjoy your smoothies, Green.

i was the oldest in my Spin Instructor Class...lol...in my classes I am at the "older" end...lol. I don't instruct, but keep the cert up in case I get the urge. And oh boy, I look forward to retiring...but no plans for a great while. What is this CINJ? Sounds interesting. I am going to do my best to keep my strength up thru-out this mess. I use the machines, no free weights...I have lowered my wgts and upped the reps...don't want any injuries. My bad experience with an MRI came when I injured my neck 2 yrs ago...hence the MRI dread

Thanks for the MRI info, I so hope I can go feet first! And please, please, please, can I Just have this 8mm mass?? I have 8 more days til my appt, trying to keep pretending all is normal. HA! lol.
I got the Bullet for my husband because he NEVER eats fruits or veggies. I have 2 other blenders, as well. Never know when it's strawberry margarita time? I guess not too much anymore
I love a shake with all kinds of stuff in it..so I will come up with a healthier "margarita!" Thanks for your advice! -
Gren...it is Cancer Institute of NJ and is part of the big Rutgers/UMDNJ stuff in New Brunswick. CINJ is more of a research type thing or that is my impression but could be wrong on that part. Sounds like a good idea on lowering the weights for a time. I tried to keep my weights up after treatment and got myself sore and almost in trouble, Then met my trainer and he backed me down to 1 # weights and brought me up slowly! I have a bit of lymphedmeia in my trunk area so I do tend to worry about that

I will have to look into that CINJ, thanks! I just registered for the BIKETOUR...giving me incentive to STAY STRONG...even though I am having some scary moments while this all sinks in. Not in denial...just disbelief. Back to the Y tomorrow...I know being strong can only help. And spinning helps me zone out of all this

I kept going to the gym during my treatment and yeah, it helped me to feel normal? I cut back on the time there but yeap. it sure does help mentally

Greenae--I was back at the gym two days after lx--with surgeon's blessing and also his restriction on arm work for a couple of weeks--and I felt great after doing leg and back resistance work and after cardio. And kept working out all thru rads, always going straight from rads to gym on MWF, and never experienced fatigue during rads. So keep up your strength now and as much as you can during treatment. Added bonus--the endorphins that exercise triggers are better (and safer) than prescription meds for keeping anxiety and stress away! tgtg

I second TGTG's words. In fact, I was told outright by the radiation onc. that continuing to work out during rad. was the best way to deal with the fatigue that rad. can engender.
So you can justify it as pro-active therapy to avoid side effects, how's that?

I am going to to my best to keep at it. I just keep coming back to my fear of the MRI, and that I could have masses elsewhere. Trying so hard to not think about it. Wishing I could just Know that it's just this little spot in my ledt breast. At least once a day on the verge of tears. And 8 more days to go before I meet my doc. So, I just keep trying to plan for how healthy I will stay. And praying it has gone anywhere else. Thank you for helping me -

I agree that the gym is better than any dang anti anxiety pill! and spin? smokes but it forces you to BREATH!
