Call back for another MRI. Worried.

Options

Hi all,

Last week I had my lupron shot- every three months - and my zometa infusion - every 6 months and saw my MO for my checkup. I complained about my low back pain and In particular my mid back pain, that renders me bed ridden once and required muscle relaxants to take the edge off the pain.

He ordered an MRI and I got the results today. He said the lower back is degenerative disc disease- arthritis- I'm 46. But he ordered a second MRI with contrast of my thoracic spine. He said not to worry he just wanted a better look at a spot there!!!!!

I'm freaking out that it could be mets. Why would he order a second one with contrast? Did anyone ever have this happen to them? My MRI is Saturday which means I won't get the results until Monday. How am I going to make it until then and preserve my sanity?

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I just went through the same thing, and thankfully it turned out to be nothing.  I was having back pain after I finished treatment last year, so my MO ordered a spinal MRI (with contrast).  That revealed a nonspecific spot on one of my thoracic vertebrae that they said they had to monitor because of my history of cancer.  So I had another MRI three months later and then a final one six months after that (which I just had last week).  The spot is still there but because it hasn't gotten any larger, they have concluded it is benign.  I hope the same is true for you.  I can totally relate to your sanity comment.  The waiting is the absolute worst, especially if you have to wait a period of months just to see if something changes. Wishing you the very best results.

Thanks Better Day, I think what frightens me is my MO is against scans but sent me right back in. I wonder why he did not use contrast the first time.... I'm glad to hear your good news...this is a tough way for us "survivors" to live......

My MO is against scans too.  She will only do them when there is a symptom, but once she sees something unusual she will follow up.  It sounds like that is what your MO is doing -- being thorough.  I think it is encouraging that he told you not to worry.  I'm not sure why he didn't order contrast the first time.  I've never had an MRI without it.  Good luck on Saturday, and let me know how it goes!

    Thanks BetterDay, I will

Wrenn!!!!! How are you? I'm beginning to think the worry will never end. I called my internist to see the report I just wanted to know if it said rule out metastatic disease. He would not call me back, put his nurse on the line and said he might call me tomorrow or will wait until the results of the next MRI come in.

Not a good sign. I'll just take ambien at night, this too shall pass........

I am anxious on your behalf Schoolcounselor. It is such a nightmare waiting for these things. I think anxiety will be our constant companion for some time. I hope you get good results and get them soon. Take care. xo

Dear SC, I love your signature line (trust in the Lord - easier said than done, right?)

You probably know that MRI is notorious for being sensitive but not specific. Meaning, it can see things, we just don't know what all of them actually are! Sounds like your doctors are being thorough and taking one step at a time. Happy to hear you have Ambien to help: better living through chemistry is my motto. For sure plan something fun to do this weekend.

I myself just had the radioactive bone scan as well as CT with contrast today due to having an elevated serum calcium, a possible sign of metastases. Not really expecting them to find anything however oncology did not want to refer me to an endocrine specialist before taking a look. Still, I have cleared my calendar so I can be home when the call comes.

Vinrp, faith is such a tenuous thing, but what else do we have.

I'm hoping it's nothing I have been able to get through the week so far. One more day until the scan and results on Monday. My Internist did call and said the radiology report said it was an "abnormal cord response" and they have to check what it is.

I would not be so concerned but it is in the spot where I complained f the significant pain and its still there...trying not to dwell on it. There is way too much to do!

When I was going through tratment, I did not realise the anxiety that would follow....

I like to call it "scanxiety"...

Something going on with the spinal cord does not sound like metastatic bone disease. Perhaps a nerve is getting pinched by a "slipped" disc and causing pain?

My imaging studies showed no sign of skeletal tumors but I can't get an endocrinology appointment until February. There were a couple lung nodules which means follow-up tests in a few months to make sure they are stable/not growing.

Perhaps your clinicians will allow a miracle to happen by calling you this weekend to report the results! Cutting the wait time would truly be a gift.

MRI was today, I got there thinking that I was going for a thorasic spine, nope. Either my internist lied to me or he was mistaken. No they wanted to look at my lumbar spine again with contrast. what happened to just arthritis.....??!!!

Anyway went out with family and bought a new to me car, previous car had 165000 miles on it.

Now the waiting begins, I just have to get through tomorrow.... scananxiety indeed!!!
