Diet coke/pepsi lover or hater?! Please HELP!

I picked up the Diet Coke habit pretty early in my life - probably around age 11 or 12.  I was diagnosed with DCIS Stage 0 breast cancer at the age of 24 (cancer in over 1/2 of left breast ducts - had to have mastectomy).

As I have gotten a little older, I have started to wonder if diet choices (ex: Diet Coke artificial sweeteners!!) had any impact on my breast cancer.  I am also currently completing a dietetic internship and I have decided to do a research project regarding artificial sweeteners and their correlation with breast cancer occurrence.

Please take a moment to reply if you had a strong relationship with a food/drink containing artificial sweeteners PRIOR to your breast cancer diagnosis...THANK YOU!!!

hi bcsurvivor - I too picked up the diet coke habit. I probably got addicted to it back in my 20s and I am now 52. I don't drink it anymore. Chemo made it taste horrible so I gave it up. Do I think it contributed to my cancer? Who knows. If there is blame to place I blame it on the birth control pills I took forever bleh. I want a do over lol. Good luck with your research.

This could be a difficult topic to research, because there are so many confounding factors that you'd really have to try to eliminate to have a proper look at it. You might want to survey the literature first, especially for any reviews that bring together a lot of research that's already been done on similar subjects. (Your institution's librarians can be a lot of help with that type of thing! And they'll love you for using their services.) To answer your question - I do sometimes drink diet Pepsi, but not a lot of it, only when I'm out in restaurants, so maybe once or twice a month, and I didn't start until I was in my 30s or 40s. Diagnosed with DCIS at 51. Either it's extremely powerful at very small amounts in terms of causing cellular changes, or it wasn't a factor in my case. Hope that's helpful.

Used to drink 2-3 cans a day. I read somewhere that soda, specifically diet soda could have a connection with breast cancer so I haven't had a diet coke since my diagnosis December 2014.

Correlation is not cause, scientifically speaking.
