Best wishes for a smooth surgery and a restful recovery. While in the hospital, ask for what YOU need before you need it. ie pain medicine. Lis

Haha! The shower went ok, and then I slept for about 2 hours! I decided not to use the stool in the end, as I don't have a hand held attachment and cannot regulate the flow in my shower.
I had my stool just outside, and when I was done, including washing my own hair, I stepped out and sat on the stool while dh helped me dry off.
My underarms, chest and frontage all feel rather stiff and pouffy now. Maybe I'll skip the shower tomorrow!
I think you'll do fine with the wedge pillow Violet. Have you tried setting it up with all the pillows and trying it out? Better to know what you're going to do rather than having to experiment on discharge!
Getting out of bed is hard for the first few days, and the more upright you are, the easier it is. And there's nothing worse than feeling stranded like a turtle on its back!
On the other hand, my tailbone is pleading for me to get off it and lie flat!!
-
Yes, do ask and be clear about pain medications before you go in if possible. I had assumed I would have a pca morphine button, but although I had iv morphine, I didn't realize I was supposed to ask for it. There was very poor communication between my surgeon, the nursing staff and myself, which led to a few horrible days.
I understood the surgeons reluctance to have me on morphine when I suddenly got nauseous on two occasions, and started dry heaving with no warning. I didn't throw up, but that retching was a truly terrible and frightening feeling! #Pain!!!
If they are giving you oral or hung iv meds make sure they are scheduled, and not just prn. Most of the time I couldn't see my clock, let alone be working out when my meds were due!

Hoping surgery went well for goodrhue (today) and also MichelleLg (2 days ago)
Healing thoughts for you two gals, and I hope Annieb4 is doing ok? Check in, Annie, if you are reading yet?
-
I hope you post-DIEP ladies are healing well! I'm going to have to look into some fancy pillows. I know that lying down was an issue when I had my mastectomy. In more important (exciting) news, I finally have a DIEP DATE!! I will be going in Monday April 13th
. This is really happening. I got to figure out a way to tell my supervisor that I can't attend this work-related trip anymore.
-
Hello Ladies,
Today is the first day I drove my car. I also went grocery shopping. When I got home my belly was swollen. First time it swelled like that. Is it normal to swell even when wearing the binder? Does it mean I over did it?
As for pain control in the hospital, I had a dilaudid PCA and IV Tylenol. Worked very well. Did not experience pain.
-
Congratulations on your surgery date Sheri Cola! It goes by fast. I wish you the best:)
-
Violet, hope all went well for you today! Sounds like you'll be in good hands during recovery.
Morwenna, sounds like you're doing really well. I remember that I couldn't wait until I was able to sleep on my side again. Someone on the boards recommended one of those big body pillows, so I sent dh out to get me one, and it helped a lot. It will probably be a little while until you're ready for that though. Hope your back starts feeling better soon.
-
I'm feeling a little unwell today, and slept a lot. I don't seem to have a fever, but I feel a bit dizzy and light headed when I'm up.
I was getting really itchy above the right side of my belly scar, and reddened, with a few tiny white spots. Didn't like the look of this, but wondered if I'm not reacting to my steri strips. So I carefully peeled them all off, being 10 days post op, and pleased to see the incision healed ans dry beneath. I'm already less itchy, but will see if I look different tomorrow.
Then I turned my attention to the chest incisions. My PS peeled off a couple on Wednesday, as I reported an area that was spotting. He told me that if there was moistness beneath the strips it was a good breeding ground for infection. So I finally got all the strips off a few at a time over the day, and dismayed to find several moist areas.
Nothing is looking too scary though, so I'll see how they look just allowing them to dry out, and, oh great it's the weekend coming up! I was pleased that the BS nurse navigator phoned to see how things are going, and she is ok with this plan.........
-
Popped in to the the PS today. He is sure I just have a skin reaction, but has told me to go back tomorrow if I'm worried.
Showered and walked today, doing much better, but wiped out this afternoon.
Totally getting the T.Rex arm thing now!!
-
hi everyone !
2 days post op. SHEW! Accprding to nurses and surgeons , all went very well. Was told whole surgery ( bilateral mastectomy and immediate DIEP recon same time would take 8 hours +\-, and it actually only 6 1/2.. Looks good, today is the day where I walk 3 laps around ward....yikes! I'll let you know how or goes!
-
Good to hear that you are doing well Violet!
Swelly belly ... I still have distended belly and surgery was in June. My belly gets bigger as the day progresses.....but by 3:00 I look 8 months pregnant, and my belly is rock hard. Interestingly, my PS does not believe in compression garments....so I wore none? Still researching this issue
-
Hi, all - i hope everyone is healing well! I'm about an hour from Charleston, and my hubs and I are both feeling like we are coming down with a cold or flu. I'm trying not to freak out! After weeks of working late, trying to get everything ready, and then traveling across the country, my body is protesting. Fingers crossed that my worn-out immune system kicks in and I can still have surgery Wed morning.
-
LAstar: Sending positive vibes. LiLi
-
LiLi,
my PS also doesn't believe in compression. I wore some lycra yoga pants today, but not very comfy.
Now I feel like I'm getting a cold too: runny nose, sneezing/coughing is still very sore!
-
What's wrong with compression garments? I get that you may not want to use it at first because you don't want to restrict blood flow..
-
I asked my PS did I need to get any special clothing eg for compression, and he told me no, "we don't really go for compression here". I didn't ask him why not.
-
Morwenna,
I had no compression either. It simply did not even come up with my team.
Hope your sneezles don't hurt you too much.
-
I took a cold treatment last night, analgesia with decongestant and antihistamine mixture.
I slept brilliantly and woke up with a clear nose! So I don't know what that was about, but, Hooray!
Planning a quiet day today; hubby is off to work, and no visitors until my food parcel late pm, so nobody to "perform" for, and no trips to the mall today!!!
-
Thank you Morweena for your response. Now I don't feel alone with no compression garments! Glad to hear you woke up feeling better today! LiL
-
Hi ladies!
I am glad to hear those who have had the surgery seem to be doing well! I wish you continued healing!
I finally got the date I start chemo, so it looks like my surgery will be around the beginning of September, if everything goes roughly as planned.
Thanks so much for sharing your experiences!
-
Due to the flu, my surgery has been postponed to Monday, Jan 26. Between naps, I am busy trying to rearrange my travel plans and childcare. Frustrating, but what can you do?
-
LAstar,
That IS bad luck, to get the flu at this point. At least they didn't move the surgery date too far away, but you don't want to be coughing and sneezing too much right after this tummy thing, believe me!
Get well soon!
-
LAstar, that stinks, but glad you don't have to wait too much longer. Hope you feel better soon.
-
LA star hope you feel better. Sorry you had to postpone but you definitely don't want to be sick while recovering from such major surgery.
As for compression, had to wear an abdominal binder since surgery, only take it off to shower. No bra post op first 2 weeks then cleared to wear a sports bra (no underwire bras).
It's only been close to 6 weeks since my Diep. Although it has not been easy I am very happy with my choice.
-
Two weeks today since my surgery, and I was considering my healing incisions. Everywhere looking quite good now with no areas of concern, and the itchy reaction from the steri strips gradually subsiding.
To calm the irritated areas down, and avoiding the actual incision line, I've been applying a little Glaxalbase cream, which seems to help. I'm gradually getting less red.
I came across this article when I looked up the term "healing ridge", and thought I'd share:

Hope everyone else is doing well! xxx

Hi everyone. I am starting the process - have a consultation this Thursday. I've been lurking for a bit reading posts to get more info, and I am wishing continued healing for everyone who's had their surgery, and best wishes for those going into it. :-)
I originally had a consult in 1/2013, just a couple of months after I finished rads. At that point, the surgeon I saw (Kaiser-Denver), said the only option for me was lat flaps with implants, which I just don't want. I don't want implants or to involve muscle, and I wasn't ready for another big surgery anyway, though, at the time, so I've just gone on with life essentially since. Only thing is, I have (ackkk!) put on 30 pounds since. I didn't plan for it, and I'm not loving it; it is more than I've ever weighed in my life, and I am setting a goal to improve my fitness this year. However, I am hoping that it could at least mean now that more options, like DIEP and GAP, are available to me. My BMI (27) needs to be better but it isn't so high that the surgery couldn't be done for that reason alone.
I've reviewed the questions to ask, and jotted down a list. Crossing my fingers that the surgeon is willing to work with me on these procedures now. If not... then I'm going to pursue referrals to outside, like the University of Colorado. I would do NOLA in a heartbeat, but even if all of the referrals, etc. worked out so that I could use my current insurance, traveling that far away around such a major operation is pretty daunting. My husband is disabled, and my grown sons are awesome, but they have their lives too.
Anyway, if all works out, I'm thinking about later this year, after our busy time at work has died down, but before the holidays. I'm open to suggestions for more questions, etc. aside from the obvious ones!
-
Btw, when I had my consult in 2013, his response wasn't based on the results of any MRIs or anything, but on what tissue I had at the time. So the state of the blood vessels remains to be determined.
-
Welcome IndigoMont11!
Once you get a date let me know and I can add you to the timeline. We are all a bit "fresh" on this thread, so if you want to ask questions of more seasoned "flappers", consider posting on the DIEP 2014 thread also!
-
Hi everyone, I've just had a date confirmed for surgery! I'm having delayed bilateral DIEP with Dr DellaCroce in Nola on the 4th of February. With only two weeks notice I'm scrambling to prepare and organize everything. Thanks to everyone here on BC.org I have some idea what to expect. I'm both excited and nervous. Mostly excited right now!
