    Zohra,

You need to find a certified lymphedema therapist.  It will either be an occupational therapist or physical therapist that has additional training and is certified either through Norton School of Lymphatics or Academy of Lymphatic Studies. Going sooner than later is key in treating LE.

    Good luck

    Zohra, hello!

    Here's information about truncal lymphedema:

    http://www.stepup-speakout.org/breast_chest_trunck...

There are plenty of us here with truncal lymphedema, so please don't hesitate to tell us how we can help.

As Carlie suggests, a well-trained lymphedema therapist is your next "best friend." (In addition to the two therapist schools she mentions, Klose and Vodder both have good training programs too.) Here's how to find a well-qualified therapist near you:

    Be well!

Nothing works better for me than a compression top and intense enough exercise that brings on deep breathing.  Adding a bounce to the exercise is even better.

My LE flared during radiation.  I bounced 5 - 10 minutes on a trampoline with a training bar and this always brought it back under control.  At the time I couldn't wear a compression garment.  Now I run in good weather, use the trampoline in the winter during bad and always wear a compression top.

If I couldn't exercise, I'd use the deep breathing techniques outlined in this link.

Have you found the right LE PT?

I have truncal LE that may or may not be moving into my arm also, so I guess I have the works.

I've started shopping for a compression cami. After looking at what is available and giving up on the local breast cancer shop in the hospital I'm going to start with the least expensive and work my way up. I ordered a Genie and also ordered a Genie bra just for the heck of it and because the price is RIGHT, (19.99 for the cami, 5.49 for the bra). I read on Stepup a few woman commented that they liked the Genie.

I've gained 40 pounds since being diagnosed with BC. I have just now started exercising and realized I needed compression for the bounce, so I'm using a very effective inexpensive sports bra with wide straps, it's really flattening as opposed to flattering. I'm also using a mastectomy bra that is textured to help fluid movement. I use the pockets for chip packs. I haven't familiarized myself with swell spots yet but that's next.

It seems that Lymphedema is not only a medical condition, it is also a shopping experience.

Susan, your last sentence is so true! It's amazing how much shopping is required... It would be funny if it weren't so darn expensive!

It's interesting you said your truncal may be moving into your arm... I used to be able to wear a compression bra without a sleeve (I've has serious issues finding one that works), but with time I've found if I try to compress my trunk without my arm, I feel like I can feel fluid backing up into it.

I received the Genie Cami and Bra. Really impressed with the speed of delivery. I took the cami to my LE PT last night and she approves. It's comfortable and the breast shells ( for lack of a better word) are removable, if I decide to wear a bra with it. The Genie bra is OK for sleeping in, The color is a loud pink because that was what was on sale. The bra rolls up a little at the bottom but that could be because my midriff is bulge is a little bit to bulging, not sure that would happen to everyone.

I'm satisfied with what I have for now. I would call the compression for the Genie Slimmer moderate/light which feels just right for me. If I want more compression I may order it in a smaller size and try that.

About the shopping floaton, I would rather be buying shoes!

I guess everyone's experience is different. I gasped at Doxie's comments about exercising. For me, any "bounce" is excruciating. I cannot breathe deeply either, since any motion of the ribcage sets off sharp pains. My left arm can be used only for very light action, no reaching out or carrying heavy loads. I used to be very active, but now I feel nearly helpless. So far, the only thing that allows me to function at all is wrapping with large Ace bandages, day and night. That keeps the swelling at bay and the pain at a minimum. As soon as I remove the bandages, the swelling and pain return fairly quickly. So I'm learning to face life as a mummy. :-)

Turtlelady I hope you are wrapping with short stretch bandages as instructed by a certified LE therapist. Actual ace bandages have too much stretch and can make things worse.

    turtlelady,

It sounds like you are really struggling. Have you had a doctor check to see if something else is going on with your ribs? A fracture, a cartilage problem unrelated to LE? Did you have radiation?

Turtlelady, I, too, could not stand any jiggling. I would hold onto my bad boob when walking or riding in a car. A PET scan (done for a different reason) showed a 6cm seroma at my lumpectomy site. (Someone described hers as like a waterbed.) It is dissipating and I can now walk two miles a day. I read that it is best to just let it dissolve as needle aspiration can introduce infection. Of course, I just sat in my recliner for over a month.

Susan, I am up 20 pounds since dx. Hate it! The Genie bra works for me. Yes, it rolls up on the bottom, but the shoulder straps are just long enough for my long torso. I keep the padding in for extra support.

Did anyone have a bladder problem after a lymph drainage massage? I have only had one 1/2 hour session and I drink plenty of water, but I felt like I was getting a bladder infection the next day. WBC count was up so Dr. put me on Cipro and Pyridium.

@ turtle lady. @doxie and @sweet hope..... I can't stand any bounce. I use a very strong sports bra for movement including driving, pot holes are painful. I put pressure on my breast when I see anything that looks like it is going to cause the car to bounce.

I'm still unable to exercise. I had my chest under control and than got the flu, I barely knew my name for 4 days and took about a week before I was able to start doing my MLD and LE exercises, not back to where I started from but close, I was coughing from my abdomen instead of my chest I assume because of the LE and pulled muscles in my tummy. I've never heard of anyone doing that. This is one weird condition!

There are good sports bras that do about the same thing as ace bandages without causing anymore damage. I received one from a catalog "Title Nine" that is full coverage and absolutely no bounce that "store" has a huge selection of sports bras rated by size and support. I also bought a very inexpensive sports bra at Target and it works well. It's trail and error.

I have to pee as soon as my massage is over, right away! So far no bladder infection, but I will now be aware of that possibility.

Sweethope, or anyone else that may know, is it the massage that actually caused the bladder infection? I've never heard of that happening. Kind of scary. I've always heard it's mostly ecoli that causes those. It somehow gets into the urethra. That's why they tell you to urinate before and after sex and to wipe front to back and to take showers instead of tub baths, etc. But LE massage putting you at risk is new to me. Sweethope, hope you're feeling better. I've only had a couple of UTI's before and they're painful!

Also I've been having pain/burning and tightness on my LE side for awhile that seems worse with deep breaths and also in the car. I've been thinking the worst like rib or lung mets! I see my Onc next month for my three month checkup and I'm going to tell him. Hoping and praying it's just my LE. It sucks but it would obviously be better than mets!

Luvmydobies, I have no idea is this was from lymph drainage. I just put it out there to see if anyone else had the same symptoms. I only shower, never baths; carefully wipe correctly, etc. Did you have any urinary issues with chemo? I've read to have a squirt bottle of water or add a bidet feature to the toilet. Don't know if this is for irritation or sanitation.

I'm so sorry you are worried about your LE side. I know this must be stressful, but please don't think it's mets. Call your oncologist and let him know. That's what he's there for. A month is a very long time when you have such deep concerns. Of course we are all hoping its LE...strange what we wish for now!

Sweethope I did not have any urinary issues during chemo. I wasn't told to get a squirt bottle or anything either. I did and still use Charmin wet wipes however. I'm addicted to those now! LOL!! Too much can cause irritation though. But even though we are careful about cleaning and stuff our bodies just get "off" sometimes and infections creep up. I wasn't thinking that you we're unsanitary so I hope you don't think I thought of you that way. I just thought it was interesting, for lack of a better word, that you got the UTI the day after your massage. If you hear anything like if that could be a factor please let us know. The flu stuff going around is making me nervous now because it's a dangerous strain! Hospitals are being bombarded from what I hear. YIKES!!

My Onc appointment is February 9th. I told my PCP about it two weeks ago and she said to mention it to the Onc. He is very much against scans though and it seems most are. I consider what I'm having a symptom though! So I will ask him. You are correct it is strange for what we wish for! We're like horray for IBS, menopause, or arthritis! Haha! I never thought I'd be having these "issues" at 38!!! UGH!
