Suspicious shadow on x-ray of hip

Options

I am of course very worried. I went for an x-ray for pain in thigh and doctor thought it might be a pinched nerve in my lower back so he ordered x-ray of back and pelvis. He just called and said the radiologist saw a shadow on the right side of my hip. They are now going to schedule a nuclear test (the one where you drink the liquid). Why would they choose that test over an MRI?

I am ten years out. I am praying hard this turns out to be nothing.

So sorry you have to go thru this scare after 10 years…I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers that it is just an issue with the quality of the X-ray image. I had a bone scan with contrast due to bone pain, thankfully it was "just arthritis" - never thought I would be so happy to know I had arthritis! I asked the Radiologist why a bone scan vs an MRI and he said the bone scan gave him a picture of the entire skeleton and it was the best way to identify or rule out bone mets. This article does a brief comparison of the types of imaging: http://radiopaedia.org/articles/skeletal-metastases…good luck (((Hugs))) Maureen

    Maureen - very good article.

Tzane - You mention the one that you have to drink liquid with.  Would it be a PET scan?  I never had to drink liquids with bone scans but I did with a PET scan.  I have multiple bone mets and never had an MRI.  And yes, it could just be arthritis.  Bone scans cannot always tell if it's a met or not.  It has to be compared with Xrays and/or CT scan and sometimes a biopsy.  A PET scan will not only see bones but the whole body.  Hoping it's nothing serious - thoughts and prayers coming your way.  Keep us posted.

My PET scan was done after my BMX surgery. The contrast was given to me in an IV. It wasn't something I drank. You also have to be on a restrictive carbohydrate diet the day before.

My neck is hurting in a new place. I went to my PCP. Since I would like to see a chiropractor she said she would send me for an MRI. If I was willing to see the physical therapist she referred me to in the past, she would just get an xray. She pretty much dismissed the bone met theory I have in the back of my mind. I see my MO in a couple of weeks, I doubt he'll get to excited about this new complaint of mine.
