Lump/Enlarged node in Neck

Options
Hello All. I am 8+ years out from stage 3A ILC, 2+ nodes. Last night I was watching the playoffs (go Hawks!!) when I noticed a lump, possibly an enlarged node, on the right side of my neck, under my jaw. It seems tender, or maybe that is because I keep messing with it? It is probably the size of 1/2 of a very small egg. I can't believe I have not felt it before, which makes me think it came up fast. Would love to hear any advice or experinces with something like this. Of course the mind goes to the dark side. But couldn't it be something else. Thanks so much for any feedback! Cyndi

CK55- There are so many reasons for enlaged lymph nodes, most have nothing to do w/cancer. More than likely a virus such as Epstein Barr or Mono or even blocked salivary gland. It depends on other symptoms especially if you have any fever. We BC ladies right away think of the worst things first. Am a retired RN and always try diagnosing myself before going in for a check up which creates even more worry than needed. So best to get it looked at if it persists.

And Yes - Go Seahawks !

Thanks GrammyR! Interesting about the blocked salivary gland. What would be a symptom of that? A couple days ago I had a weird sensation way at the back, under my tongue. A sharp pain. It felt like I had a canker sore back there, but couldn't find anything.

I'm dealing with something similar, Cyndi. I am 2+ years out from my dx with stage 1 IDC, cancer-free after mastectomy. For about a week now I have had extremely tender lymph nodes on my left side (cancer side) under my jaw. Feels somewhat enlarged, but more painful than anything. Also all over body/muscle pain, and just today started feeling that same canker sore feeling you described under your tongue (but on my right side, not left like the other pain). Do you have any other symptoms? I feel like I should have a fever because I am so achy and exhausted, but nothing.

    Cyndi-

Funny you should mention the Seahawks game and have people respond with the idea of a blocked salivary gland. My son went to the game yesterday(Go Hawks!) and ended up going to the ER last night with similar symptoms to those you and others are describing here. His was so swollen it was interfering with his breathing.

Long story short-it was a blocked salivary gland. Your description of the pain under the tongue could have been written by him.

Adelaide77, I really don't have any other symptoms. Did you get a flu shot? I am wondering if because they missed the right strain and you get the shot, maybe the symptoms are not what you would normally expect - kind of like what we are experiencing?

YarmAl, that is so strange (as well as encouraging) that your son had the exact same symptoms under his tongue. What did the do for him? And did he get the flu shot?

Thank you both for responding. Both very interesting posts!

Cyndi, I did get the flu shot. Very interesting theory. Maybe that's what it is? Hope you are feeling better soon! I went to bed at 9 last night, slept till 8 this morning (usual for me is bed at 11, wake-up at 5), and still feel awful. Hoping it passes soon!

    Cyndi-

He did have the flu shot. He was given some sort of steroid in the emergency room because the swelling was starting to interfere with his breathing. He has been told to take ibuprofen and to suck on sour candy to stimulate saliva production, and to massage his salivary gland to try and make the stone pass. If it doesn't pass in a couple of days, he'll have to have surgery to remove it.
