    I was diagnosed with DCIS just before Thanksgiving. After talking with the surgeon I felt pretty optimistic since they caught it early. I'm having a lumpectomy on Jan. 15 th and the closer it gets the more worried I am. Since I have no risk factors other than age I'm concerned about it coming back. Also I'm not sure what to expect after surgery. Thanks for any insight

    I amterrified also, I'm having my surgery in Fevruary. I'm also constantly thinking what if I get it again, and what if they find something more during the surgery.

    I was the same way when I was fist DX. I was constantly worrying about all the what ifs. It really does get better with each step of the way. Try to just get thru surgery....if you're having a lumpectomy it's really not that bad. The hardest part is the unknown. Just waiting on information and a treatment plan. But I promise you it does get better. My only risk factor was age too.

    Reading these boards were very helpful. Especially the Lumpectomy Lounge. We were all going thru our surgeries around the same time. It helps to talk to others who truly understand what you're dealing with.

    So glad your's was caught early. Hang in there!

    There is a lot of good information on this site. I read everything I could so when I talked with my Doc it was not so overwhelming. I think there's a section called Breast Cancer 101.

    Mnh and Jean, everyone here understands, just how you are feeling. We humans don't do fear of the unknown, very well. Once you have had your surgery and have a definitive answer of Dx, when the final pathology comes in, things begin to fall into place.

    It all just takes time, it is a horrible shake up and a lot of information to process.

    As Nash suggested, read up on these boards, stay away from google. There is a huge amount of really excellent information here on DCIS, we have a resident expert named Beesie, so anything on the subject written by her, is well worth reading. I actually printed out all the information from Besie, on DCIS for my friends and family, so they would understand just what was going one with me. I didn't have the faintest idea, what DCIS was, when I first arrived here 2 years ago.

    Welcome and I agree with Ariom - come to this trusted site and read, try to stay off of generic sites - these are real women and can help you cope.  You will come to like and trust people out here.

    My lumpectomies were fine - it's more the anticipation.  I was more sore than hurting - like I had done a bunch of push ups.  There are a ton of options for DCIS - one step at a time, we will help you.

    Hello Ladies! I am also scheduled for a Lumpectomy on 1/15.............my third one. This one will really be a re-excision, as the margins on my last one (12/18) did not have clear margins.

    My lumps were not bad at all, and to be honest, you can't even tell I have had one let alone two. Now I am a DD, so that is a big (no pun intended) reason why. My only pain came two weeks after the surgery. It was a slight tingling and burning sensation, probably the nerve endings healing. I had two Steriotactic biopsies that were far worse than the surgery. On the other hand, I never took the pain meds that were prescribed, no need!

    Thanks so much for the encouraging words. I'm trying to keep busy and not dwell on this-easier said than done! Still don't understand why I got this. My parents and Grandma lived well into their 90s and never had cancer. But I guess that doesn't matter,we just have to take things as they come.     Well I had my surgery yesterday and it went better than I expected, as far as the pain afterwards. The worst part was the numbing for the wire insertion and that didn't last very long. Other than that it was not a big deal. I only took 2 Motrin the following morning for a sore throat. Now just have to wait for the pathology report.
