January 2015 Surgery Sisters

Hi all, I am scheduled for a lumpectomy and SNB on Jan. 15. I am so ready to get this surgery over with and get my SNB path report back! I am so glad I am not alone in all of this and that this post exists. I haven't figured out how to add all of my information to the bottom of my post but I am stage 1, grade 2, ER/PR+, HER2-. I have a Ki-67 score of 50% so there is already talk of chemo even if SNB comes out clear depending on how the oncotyping comes out.

Dear So-she-did,
Welcome to our ever expanding group, of whom a few have successfully had their surgery. I see that you share the same surgery day with Mary59G. Next week looks like a busy one and I wish you well as we all look toward healing.
This is a remarkable group of women and may you take comfort in the day-to-day exchanges with one another.
Wishing you the best.
Hugs,
~Hygeia

Oh Lulu22--somehow I missed your name from the list. Best wishes on your surgery. Really hopeyou are spared chemo this time. Will be thinking about you and Cassie. Hug
-
CassieCat and Lulu22 -- best wishes for successful surgeries and recoveries with minimal pain. I'll be thinking about you guys today!
so-she-did -- welcome to the group! I'm so ready to have my lumpectomy, too. Of course I was diagnosed in late June and had to go through five months of neoadjuvant chemo, so I've been waiting for surgery FOR-EVUH.
I talked to my nurse navigator yesterday; it looks like the surgeon will only be taking out the Level 1 lymph nodes, not Levels 1 and 2. Fewer lymph nodes means less of a chance for lymphedema, so that's good.
-
so-she-did, Well Sister, we have the same surgery day. I am so ready to get this over with and look forward hoping it hasn't spread. I was scheduled for a pre-op on January 5th and we got half way there only to get a call that my granddaughter was missing! We turned around came back home and spend the day frustrated but found her. She is fine, yes she was with a boy and at her age she just turned 17 2 weeks ago that there is nothing her dad can do about it. So needless to say U of M was wonderful and now my pre-op is the 12th, then on the 14th I go in for the dye and the wire and the 15th surgery. Gosh hope nothing else goes wrong I really need some good luck! My husband passed away suddenly 2 weeks before I was diagnosed so this has been hellish to say the least. Good luck sister I will be thinking of you as we travel this day together. Hugs!!!!
-
To all my sisters on here, I just want to say I'm so proud of you that have already had your surgeries and it sounds like everything went well. Hoping the same for everyone here, just stay strong and we can make this history!!!
-
Prayers for you today Cassiecat, hoping a clean path report! You have already completed so much, wishing you the best!!
-
Hi Mary59G,
I'm so sorry about the passing of your husband. Cancer is tough enough in and of itself. Hellish sounds about right! Hugs to you!
I'm glad to have you as a surgery sister! I grew up in Minnesota so I'm a Midwestern girl myself. January 15th cannot come fast enough and the results of the SNB even more so! I am facing going back to work after a 3 week winter break (I'm a middle school teacher) and the anxiety surge I had after going in to school on Wednesday to prepare for going back made me feel so fragile again - like I felt those days after the breast biopsy. Anxiety seems to lead to unexpected random crying on my part which I'm sure would be an awkward situation for my middle schoolers - lol!
I have the radioactive injection the morning of my surgery. They want me there at 8, at 10 they'll make me radioactive, and then noon they'll do the surgery. I'll be thinking of you, too!
-
Hi January sisters. My BMX surgery is scheduled on the 27th. Never had surgery in my life so I am very anxious. My BS told me that it will be a day surgery so I am planning on coming home by late afternoon. I've been organizing the house and kids school/activities so that they can stay as normal as possible... wishful thinking?? Looking forward to getting to know you all.
-
so_she_did I will also be having surgery the same day as you. I was suppose to have it yesterday, but unfortunately I got sick and had to reschedule. I will be having a bmx with no recon on the 15th. I am also very nervous about the snb. Keeping positive thoughts for all of us.
-
Mary59G.. Oh.. This must be so hard to go through, especially after loosing your hubby so recently... (( Hugs))
Flyola.. Hi. Yes, the waiting for surgery does cause lots of anxiety.. Just hang in there.. How old are your kids?
Wishing everyone here all the best with your surgeries.. I had my mascetomy end of last August.. I decided not to have reconstruction.. and I'm going O.K.. although I am struggling to regain my arm /shoulder movement..
-
Welcome hugs to So-she-did and Flyolo. Anxiety is so draining. At times, I found it very hard to stay strong for the kids. I would have pity party in the bathroom or the car. Have not had one for awhile and don't plan to have one anytime soon, but you know...it creeps up on yah and hit you at an unexpected time.
So-she-did, I have great respect for what you do. Surely, you didn't go into the profession for money. Teachers are underpaid for the work they put in and you can't really put a price on the positive influence that you have on the children--our future generations. Thank you
Mary, bless your heart. Hugs to you too

hi trailrose sorry for my late reply. My life has been in fast forward mode. I saw my BS on Wednesday and they've changed my surgery to the 13th! I'll be having a partial mastectomy with up to 3 nodes removed. I went to work Thursday and everyone was told on Wednesday, so it was emotional day. Friday I had pre op and on Monday I have the mapping done. Phew!
The BS said I'll have 4-6 weeks of rads but I won't know about chemo or any other treatment until the 21st.
I've been reading how everyone has been going but I haven't had time to reply. It sounds so positive. You are all so brave. I'm very lucky to be able to share this with so many lovely ladies.
-
Cassie and Lulu, praying for you today!
My partial mastectomy on Wed. went well. Doc took two nodes, all negative. The best news! My breast area is very sore. Took Norco, but prefer to stick with Aleve or Advil. Today my feet and ankles were a bit swollen when I awoke, as was my face. I looked like I did when on steroids during chemo...red and swollen and hungover. Perhaps this is anSE of Norco? Will look that one up. Not getting any worse, so I'll ride it out over the weekend. I will walk around the house. Not up to going outside for fear of scaring little children!
Thankful to have part of a "breast" there. Will be interesting to see how radiation changes the shape. May see about evening the girls out at a later date. My focus will be on taking care of my body...eating well, exercising regularly, doing what is within my control to stay healthy. Finding my thankful place is a choice I have to make, as my default is often whining. Very normal and okay, but wading is far better for me than wallowing!
So thankful to hear reports, questions, concerns from you all.
-
I'm so pleased for you that it went well! Its great that you got your results so quick and that your nodes are clear! I enjoy that there are so many positive stories here on surgery. I hope your pain settles soon. We are having the same surgery, so I will follow your progress with interest. I hope my nodes are clear too 😃
-
JeniferE.. Yay for negative nodes. 😃 That's another hurdle crossed !! I like your idea of a "thankful place "..I'm going to take that idea on board , for when I'm having down times.
We are so lucky to have this board, with its wonderful, wonderful women for support !
-
Jan 22 is my scheduled surgery for a lumpectomy. This is very helpful, all you planners--to get me thinking about what I need to be ready for and how to make it a bit easier. I'm sure I was told, but I don't remember, will I have a drain? Doing the sentinel node biopsy as well (keeping my fingers and toes crossed that's all that is needed). I've been completed distracted at work today and trying not to worry. But the part of the biopsy report that states lymphovascular invasion detected has me worried...all over again. Do I just have to wait to find out how this going to effect me or is there some comfort out there that all will (might) be well with my world?
-
JeniferE, rejoicing with you for the negative results! It sounds like you might have an allergic reaction to Norco (I'm assuming you have had Aleve or Advil in the past). If you have Benadryl, take it to see if the swelling goes down.
Welcome BikerBabe.
-
JeniferE -- Awesome news about your nodes! Hope I'm as lucky. Looks like we both went through neoadjuvant -- getting a partial mastectomy is our reward for all those fun months of chemo! I will also be happy to have some of my breast left. How much did your surgeon take out? Mine says he will take out a golf ball-size amount of tissue. I have C-cups; not quite sure what it will look out.
-
Love, I took a Benadryl, thinking that I indeed might have an allergic reaction. No more Norco, but that's ok.
Elaine, my surgeon had to get to 4 calcifications, one near chest wall, two in between, one very close to the nipple. He went in under my breast. She looks very sad now, shrunken and saggy...definitely not perky! Doc's explanation is foggy now, will ask details at my follow-up next week. I was a C cup too. Will be interesting to see what radiation does to my shapely left breast!
-
Hi shaz101-Well then I will be thinking of you on the 13th. That's my pre-op day. Hang in there. It's so emotional and scary. I'm sending a big HUG to you!
-
Thanks trailrose, I shall be thinking of you too.
Unfortunately I feel like I have the beginnings of a cold. Does anyone have any suggestions? Andrew has told me to stay in bed today.
-
Glad to have you as another surgery sister Another Life! I'm sorry that you had to reschedule. I'm just getting over my 4th cold so I am really trying to stay well.
-
JeniferE -- well, shrunken and saggy may very well be in my future as well. I've got six weeks of radiation, too. Poor boob.
shaz101 -- hope you feel better soon and can stay on your surgery schedule!
so-she-did -- wish I had your energy! My fridge needs a good cleaning, too!
-
Don't be too impressed, Elaine. The only reason I even started on it was because I spilled something on the top shelf and it went all the way down. Otherwise it would have remained untouched.
Hope surgery went well for you Cassie and Lulu!
Glad to hear that the nodes were clear JeniferE!
-
Thanks Loveroflife. My middle schoolers were so sweet when I told them before we went on break. They really bowled me over with their empathy. I, too, have children. Two girls, 5 and 7.
-
Shaz101---yes, hope the cold will go away so you can stay on schedule. Try vitamin c and zinc. I heard both are used to help with scar tissue also. I'm trying to stay healthy myself. Husband and younger daughter are coughing.
So-she-did--I feel like I'm nesting myself...funny you mention that.
JeniferE and Elaine--if I remember correctly, someone from another forum mentioned that she uses coconut oil (the same oil you use for cooking so you don't have to worry about addedchemicals) on her radiated skin and it seems to work for her.
-
I have been home sence Wednesday, feel a little off still. I got a call from my surgeon tonight, lymph nodes are clear, margins are clear so we shall see what chemo doc says but I am really releaved. Thank all of you ladies for your support and help it was much neede. Can't wait to get the drains out and staples!!
-
Revup-65, one big rock off your shoulders...glad to hear that you have clean nodes and clear margins. Hoping you won't have to go through chemo again. The drain was so annoying for me. I felt much better after doc removed it.I was told I will have 2 this time with the TE placement and no shower until they are out
WHAT!?!? OK, thanks for listening. I should not complain because it's just a minor issue. I will suck it up and deal with it when the times come.
-
A reply to the comment about coconut oil for radiation. A friend of mine was a radiation therapist for years and she recommended trying coconut oil as well. She also said that emu oil is supposed to be great, too. I have very sensitive skin and she thought these would both be a good place to start and see if they work for me. She also suggested biafine.
As I read on here it sounds like everyone already has a team set up before surgery. Does everyone already have an oncologist? So far the only one I have on my team is my surgeon. I just got the name of a nurse navigator to contact but didn't have a chance to call her today.
