Got it. Thanks Glennie. This info is all so helpful. I am just staring on my paraben free quest. My issue is that I live in Ontario and not sure how many of these products are available to me. A trip over to Buffalo may be in order.  Once I am having a good day. Just had my fifth chemo trt today, my first taxol trt so I shall see how it goes. Amazon may be a better option for the moment. Thanks to all any suggestions are helpful. Chrissy

Hello! This forum caught my attention because I am trying to reduce my exposure to toxic chemicals in products that I use on my face and body. I was hoping to find a place where we can help each other find good safer products, and I think I've found it! :)

So, in addition to parabens, I'm also trying to avoid sulfates/SLS, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances; and am trying to use physical instead of chemical sunscreens. I just recently read an article on ewg.com that fragrances potentially contain styrene, and styrene is “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.” So, I'm on a quest to buy only fragrance-free products, unless the fragrance is from a naturally derived source (like lemon or peppermint oil, for instance). Here is the link to the ewg article:

    http://www.ewg.org/enviroblog/2014/08/expert-panel-confirms-fragrance-ingredient-can-cause-cancer

Finding fragrance-free or naturally fragranced product is actually more difficult that I thought. Some products labeled as fragrance-free actually contain a masking fragrance in their ingredient list. So, I've been reading lots of labels recently!

I thought I'd offer a list of products I've found so far that satisfy my requirements, and hope others continue suggesting good safe products here, so we can help each other out. :)

Yes to Carrots Fragrance-Free Daily Cream Facial Cleanser. Target, $8. They also have a SPF 15 face moisturizer and a night cream at Target, that I didn't buy...yet. :) I just picked up the cleanser to try today, so I'll see how that goes.

The Body Shop Aloe Body Butter. Body Shop, $20 (but goes on sale for $10-12 all the time, so wait for a sale). I think the entire Aloe line appears to be free of all the bad chemicals, but I haven't checked everything yet. I also use their Aloe Soothing Day Cream.

    Burt's Bees Lemon & Vitamin E Bath & Body Oil. Drugstore.com, $8.

    Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer. Drugstore.com, $5.

Alba Botanica Mineral Terra Tints SPF 15 Lip Balm. Drugstore.com, $4.

Dove Sensitive Skin Unscented Beauty Bar. Sold everywhere, just about.

I was having a hard time finding a shampoo & conditioner that satisfiy my requirements. I just found at Amazon today a brand called TotLogic, which looks like it does, so I plan to order a bottle and try it. Has anyone tried this brand before?

I'll post more things as I find them. I'd love to hear what everyone else has found, too!

Great list!  Thanks for posting. I need to find a body wash. Bar soap dries my skin out too much, so I need a liquid.

I've heard of Yes to Carrots and Yes to Cucumbers,, I'll have to look at Target.

    You're all welcome! :)

So, I did some more Internet searching today. Apparently, baby products is where to look for toxic-free stuff! I haven't tried anything from either of these 3 brands, but they're all free of all the bad stuff, and all 3 offer shampoos, conditioners, body washes, & lotions!

Hi. Just wanted to add something to this important discussion. I have shopped on the Sephora's website for makeup and skincare products. They have a filter for ingredients preferences. Paraben-free is one of the selections you can make. It sure makes it easier for you to make a choice.

Here's an example: There are 159 different mascaras at Sephora from which to  choose. When you select Paraben-free, the selection becomes 37.

Another example is with Body Lotion/Body Oils that they sell. The choices go from 191 down to 38 that are Paraben-free.

This points out that parabens are in so many everyday products. It's scary!

But really, who needs that many choices of mascara?!

So, I just spent about half an hour today at Whole Foods in their health & beauty aisle. They have quite a bit of stuff that is non-toxic, like shampoo, conditioner, body washes, lotions, and sunscreens. They even have their own house brand of non-toxic products!

mary625:  Thanks for letting us know you like the Yes to Carrots body wash. I just tried their fragrance-free face cream cleanser the last 2 days and liked that it cleaned but did not dry out my skin. I was curious about the synthetic fragrance component in their scented products, so I sent Yes To, Inc. an email asking about it. They wrote back to tell me that their fragrances do NOT contain styrene. So that's good news. :)

I also downloaded the free "Skin Deep" app from the Environmental Working Group on my iPhone. The functionality is not very good.

However, the Environmental Working Group's website is a treasure trove of useful data. I especially enjoyed the section on Sunscreens

The wife and I have been purging all sorts of things we thought were safe. It's truly amazing how many unhealthy products are relentlessly marketed to the mainstream.

Today, we spent some time in Whole Foods. They really do have a massive selection of organic / paraben free products.

Happy Hump Day! I've been shopping online today for toxic-free goodies. Good thing I go back to work next week so I can pay for all this stuff.  :)

FYI, www.yestocarrots.com is having a sale today.  A lot of their stuff is discounted to $5 and they have free shipping if you spend $50. I think shipping is $7 if you don't spend $50. So, I decided to buy a bunch of their stuff to try while they're on sale. For $5 each, I got the Blueberry Shampoo, Blueberry Conditioner, Blueberry Face Wipes, Fragrance-Free Face Wipes, Carrots Leave-In Conditioner, & Grapefruit Body Wash. I also picked up a couple of other things that were also on sale but not for $5: Mint Lip Butter ($1.80) and the Tomatoes 3 Step Acne Bundle ($19.99).

I also bought a couple of liquid hand soaps ($6.99 each) from www.soapboxsoaps.com today.  They have bar soaps, liquid hand soaps, and body washes that are all free of the toxic chemicals. Plus they donate soap, water, or vitamins to people in need in the US, Canada, and abroad for every purchase. They're having a 20% off sale. Shipping is ~$5.

Then, I saw at the physical Target store that they now stock 2 new brands of liquid hand soaps that are free of all the bad chemicals. One was "The Honest Company," available in 2 flavors: Lavender & Lemongrass, for $4.99 each.  The other was "Seventh Generation," for $2.99 each, with 3 flavors available. One was actually fragrance-free. I can't remember what the other 2 flavors were. (EDIT: One is Mandarin Grapefruit & the other is Tea Tree). Links to these 2 are below:

    http://www.target.com/p/honest-lavender-liquid-han...

    http://www.target.com/p/seventh-generation-12-floz...

After I get all this stuff and try it out, if it's all good, then I can start getting rid of the "bad" stuff my family and I currently use! Woo hoo!

    Hiya -

Just checking in with this thread to see if anyone has found some favorite safe products to use. Up until now I've been concentrating more on adding more veggies to my diet, taking away some of the sweets and carbs and working a little exercise into my life. Now I'm trying to tackle more safe products for my cosmetics, lotions, etc. I've made lots of notes from this thread and have done some searching on my own and plan on purchasing a few things this weekend to try out. I find this all very overwhelming! I'm also shocked at how difficult it has been to find the ingredients in some products. After throwing away the packaging long ago, many of the things I am using now give no clues and then when I tried to search them online, many of the companies do not have ingredient lists. I found that very disturbing! I am also gluten free so I am on the lookout for that as well. If anyone has any more to add, please come back and share! I figured I would add to this thread rather than starting a new one since this one already has a lot of good info.

    Thanks!

Great info on this thread, thanks! I was wondering if anyone can recommend a safe nail polish. Do most people use hair dye?

    Thanks!

My wife researched nail polish and found some good options at Whole Foods. Not sure which ones she purchased, but as a general rule, Whole Foods has the highest level of compliance when it comes to paraben free beauty products. This includes the selection nail polish.

Hair dye is often toxic. Just ask any hair dresser that has breast cancer.

OK, I'm very minimalist when it comes to body care. I don't color my hair or nails, and use no hair products. My husband is very sensitive, so I try to use fragrance free products and don't wear perfumes. I have been using peroxide and eco-dent on my teeth. I was using desert essence shampoo and conditioner, but today tried a baking soda wash (diluted) and cider vinegar (diluted) rinse, and my hair is very nice and soft and shiny. I use Dr. Bronner's bar soap. I use only coconut oil on my skin, a home-made lip balm with beeswax and almond oil, and a home made deodorant made with coconut oil, baking soda and arrowroot. For personal lubrication I found "sliquid organics" which is paraben free.

flaviarose - glad you are having success with some homemade things. I was actually thinking about it yesterday when I was shopping and not having as much luck as I thought I would. I joked with my kids that all the junk in products just makes me want to mash up some blueberries and spread that on my eyelids instead of any make up! Of course that comment received some eye rolls, but it also made them laugh, so that was good! We just had a Whole Foods open not too far from me but I haven't made it there yet. I was at the smaller local health food store yesterday and really didn't find what I was looking for. I also went to Walmart and only found one or two things that were paraben free, but they had other things in them so I didn't buy them yet. I will try a few other places first instead of rushing into a purchase. I did notice they had coconut oil in the lotion section so I did almost buy that. It's good to know it is working for you. Is it greasy at all? If you are interested in sharing your homemade recipes, I'd love to try them!

Here is how to make the beeswax and almond oil lip balm:

    https://snapguide.com/guides/make-beeswax-and-hone...

Here is a recipe for the deodorant:

    http://wellnessmama.com/1523/natural-deodorant/

(I don't heat it, just mix the ingredients.)

Coconut oil on my skin is maybe a little greasy, initially. You shouldn't use too much. I put a little on my hands and rub it in there first before applying to my face. It seems to sink in quickly and doesn't leave a greasy feel.

flaviarose - Thanks, very much! I will check out those links. I did make it to Whole Foods today to look around, but didn't have much time. I almost bought a lotion there, but realized I wasn't sure about something. Is it 'ok' to have soy in a lotion or are we supposed to avoid that? I have heard of it having estrogen like properties when eaten, but realized I don't know anything about if it is absorbed through the skin when it is in a lotion. It seemed like I should check it out before I buy anything with soy in it. If anyone knows anything about this, please share! Thanks.

    https://www.psico.com/

This company has a line of products that have no parabens, fragrances, formaldehyde. I use the shampoo, conditioner, moisturizing cream, ointment, hair spray and bar soap. These are the only things I have been able to find that don't leave me dried out and itchy. They will send you samples of everything if you ask.

Mel, your smaller health food store will probably be happy to special order products for you. They also NEED to have input from customers who don't find the products they need.

I really like to support smaller, local companies rather than the chains, whether Walmart or Whole Foods and I find that they are receptive to input from their customers.

Good luck in your quest from products that work well for you!
