Purplish Black Tissue Clogging Drains?

Hi, all!

My prophylactic side drain came out on Day 3 post op, but the cancer side still had a lot of output. On Christmas Day, that one went down to less than 30 cc, but my follow up appt to take it out isn't until tomorrow. I dont know what is going on but the post couple days I'm having intense pressure and significant discomfort--ok, pain!--inside my chest where the drain is, and it looks like tissue is being sucked out. I keep stripping the tubing but sometimes almost the entire length of tube is clogged with what seriously looks like an umbilical cord. Did anyone else have this?

I didn't have this issue myself, but I have heard that drains can shift and maybe that's what's happened to yours. No signs of infection is there?

I cannot recall the name for the umbilical cord type tissue, but I had it and it wasn't anything to be concerned about. I did not, however experience purplish black tissue. Mine was white. I think my husband said it was cells that bonded together but again, white not black or purple. If you are concerned, I'd call the nurse.

no sign of infection, just the increased pain and the never-ending, weird color solid masses. I'm super upset because i placed a call to my doctor and no one called me back.

I had plenty of build-up of what I called "gunk" for lack of a more professional term.

It was stringy and solid and straw-colored, though, not purplish black. Fluid could go around it. I tried stripping the tube to no avail, but when I discovered it didn't block my drain tube, I left it alone.

BOO HISSSSSS to that doctor/nurse who never called you back!!!

Please update us when you get back from your appointment tomorrow!

I saw the NP today, and she wasnt sure why it looked that way but she pulled the drain. I feel like a new woman!
