help with the pathology report

    Oh Shaz, that's awful, I have a name for these guys, they aren't Doctors they are Dicktors and there seems to be a bloody lot of them out there!

    What an appalling way to treat you, I hope you get a better result from your Doctor tonight. Was this surgeon at a Hospital, or was it a specialist appointment? To tell someone they have surgery pending, without even discussing the options and the plan, is absolutely ridiculous and archaic. Who does that? It really makes me burn, when I hear things like this. This guy sounds like the cleaner who sat down behind a desk and pretends to be a Doctor:)

    Try to get a copy of your pathology results from your Doctor tonight shaz, so you have copies of everything. If you're going Private, you can get a second opinion, in fact I am pretty sure you can get a second opinion if you're public too. It will cost you for the visit, but may be worth investigating.

    For me, one of the main thing, that got me through all the testing and surgery, was having absolute trust, in the team I had. My surgeon was fantastic and explained everything to me and gave me options, every step of the way. I don't know why it can't be like that, for everyone.

    I hope your Doctor will help you to navigate through this shaz, and make you a little more comfortable with what's going on. Let us know how you get on tonight. (((((Hugs)))))

    I have a copy of my reports now.

    the pathology report says...

    CLINICAL SUMMARY

    Core bx.

    (L) breast core bx (5A stellate)

    MICROSCOPIC

    Microscopy shows cores of breast tissue in which there is in situ and invasive carcinoma. The tumour has a ductal morphology and is provisionally of low grade.

    OPINION

    Core biopsy, left breast: Invasive carcinoma.

    Bloods have all come back good. the bone scan is good and I'm still waiting on the chest x-ray. my GP said he will try and chase them down tomorrow.

    Any help with the results would be appreciated (private email me please if you don't want to post)

    I'm assuming that is means Invasive ductal carcinoma???

    My Dr was really puzzled on why the surgeon didn't give me the results. Now because of that, I have no idea on what the treatment might be, all I know is a tentative surgery date of the 20th.

    Dear Shaz - yes, it does sound like IDC; I'm so sorry to hear that. The fact, however, that it refers to a 'provisionally low grade' tumor is good news, as is your blood work and bone scan.

    There's a LOT of information on the main site (not the discussion forums) that may help you make sense of this information.

    You'll want to find out whether you are estrogen and/or progesterone positive and whether you are HER2 positive or negative, as these factors will drive a lot of your treatment decisions.

    Take time to really understand all your options before surgery. Your doctor should spell it all out for you. Try to record your visit so that you can go back and check everything.

    The holiday weeks are a bad time to be dealing with this, as everyone is either busy or taking time off, including medical offices. Why don't you see if you can get an appointment with your doctor for a few days after the new year (earlier if possible) so that he can explain ALL your options, why he recommends one or another, and what the treatment plan could look like.

    Also, if the surgeon isn't very communicative, see if you can get a referral to another. The surgeon will literally have your future in their hands, so you really want someone you can turn to for guidance, compassion and expertise.

    All the unknowing IS rough; it's almost the worst part of cancer (any cancer) and it's something no one warns you of. If you can take it just one hour at a time, you'll be doing fine.

    Please know that many, many of us are pulling for you. I hope you will be able to have a happy Christmas, despite all this.

    Hello shaz, I am sorry to hear you still haven't gotten much more information, but everything Hopeful has told you, is spot on. I hope you can get some more information, early in the New Year. As I mentioned in previous post, you do have the option of a second opinion. It is very important and absolutely your right, to have everything explained, before you have surgery.

    I got a bit more good news today. My chest xrays have come back clear! I did record my last session, which may be very helpful if I put in a complaint. I definitely won't be seeing him again! I am happy with my surgeon and breast clinician. I'm assuming that the surgeon I saw was filling in due to Xmas.

    I'm struggling to leave the couch. I need to get myself moving. I feel numb and sad. And everyone is coming here for Xmas.

    Dear Shaz - I'm very happy your chest xrays are clear. Every little bit of good news counts disproportionately right now, doesn't it? And it's great that you have a surgeon and clinician you like.

    I know how shell shocked you must still be feeling. Everything else pales in comparison to the idea that you have cancer. Especially at this time of the year it can feel pretty surreal. Even several months out from diagnosis, I find my emotions way too close to the surface; there's something about Christmas and all the other holidays that makes us very vulnerable, I think. If the ground weren't so soggy here I'd go up to my mom's grave tomorrow, sit down and have a good cry! And I know you've hardly had a chance to begin to wrap your mind around all of this. Maybe you can mentally schedule a day to just have a good mope after the holidays and let yourself cry, storm, whine, and all those other things we WANT to do at this point.

    In the meantime, I hope your family helps out a ton with the Christmas cooking, baking and fun-making, that they are kind and sensitive in just the ways you need, and that you'll enjoy the holiday in spite of everything. Best to you, Shaz. Take care.

    Shaz.. Sorry to here about your recent diagnosis.. Such utter shock in the beginning.. for everyone.. But there are so many wonderful ladies on this site.. ( I was dx at the end of August..) and they have all helped so much.. It's good to be able to express your thoughts here... knowing everyone understands exactly how your feeling.. Everyone is in the same boat.. Seems you have had some good news regarding grade, and your scans..The waiting is the pits.. and Christmas is stuck in the middle of it for you... Enjoy your Christmas, knowing that this time next year you will be out and about..thinking about normal Christmas stuff.. and that breast cancer won't be consuming your every thought..(( Hugs))

    I read and reread all of your comments as they give me support. I feel very connected to this community. It's nice to have people that actually know how you feel.

    Hopeful: your dx wasn't that long ago. You seem to really have a handle on it. I hope you can get some time and firm ground on visit your mothers grave.

    Lucy:how are you now? Has your life turned into a new normal or does the cancer still take away most of your daily thoughts?

    Ariom: I think you are the most amazing woman. Your husband is so very lucky to have you to share his life with.

    Today I want to put the cancer aside and spend the day with my family and friends.... now I need to get up and make my daughter's vegan turkey! Otherwise she will be eating a bowl of veggies.

    Shaz.. I am starting to surprise myself sometimes.. when I realise I havent thought about cancer for the last hour or so.. whereas in the beginning it didn't leave my mind completely for as much as a minute.!! ..
