ten days post surgery the axiliary incision opened up leaking copious quantities of liquid which I took to be seroma.. Have others had this? I had it restitched and am taking large doses of penicillin but the underarm area is very sore.

I had a seroma, but mine was on the breast area. It can be VERY painful!! have you been able to get any pain medication? Once the penicillin kicks in the pain should subside though. how many days have you been taking the meds? Also it is very important that they culture the fluid to be sure you are taking the correct type of antibiotic.

    ((hugs))

Yes I had this and ended up in Hospital with cellulitus on a drip for a couple of days. I had a golf ball sized lump which burst and leaked a lot of fluid and after a couple of days everything turned pink, this was the infection. So just keep your eyes on it and good luck.

We are just chiming in with some content on our site. We're thinking of you.

    Managing a seroma

Most seromas are reabsorbed back into your body in about a month, but it some cases it can take up to a year. If the area becomes painful or the seroma doesn't improve, your doctor can drain the seroma. In some cases, the seroma may have to be drained more than once.

    Tell your doctor if:

    • the amount of fluid seems to be increasing or the seroma is putting pressure on the healing area
    • you notice signs of infection, such as redness, warmth, or tenderness
    • the swelling increases -- this could be a sign of arm lymphedema

Thank you all for your comments. Penicillin seems to have worked - incision now closed. A residual lump remains under the armpit but is not increasing in size so I hope the seroma is being absorbed. RADS next - let's hope that does not go wrong too!
