Who has had a break during radiation?

Options

Hello

I finished 5 weeks of whole breast radiation on Friday morning and had my first tumour bed boost on Friday afternoon. My skin on the underside of my breast and armpit has started to slough off and I have some large (growing) raw weepy patches. The team are going to review the situation on Monday morning, but the way I'm feeling right now is I just want to have a break and let some of this heal before continuing with the remaining 4 boosts - unfortunately, the excision scar is on the underside of the breast so there is no respite in the raw patches from this horrid horrid treatment.

My question to you is; did you have a break during your treatment for similar reasons, and if so, how long for and did you have to fight for it?

Thanks

Pippa

Hi Pippa, I had a break of just a couple of days probably around the middle of my 5th week, possibly into my boosts already. I'm very light complected and the techs and doctor would check me and it was decided I was getting too burned so the RAD ONC said to take a few days off. I didn't want to since I was planning on my final day being calendared and I was looking forward to that but they said I didn't have a choice. I had had such a hard time with chemo that radiation was a walk in the park for me so I didn't even know I was burned. I guess my skin was a little better when I started back up, some people have to take a week off and I realized that whatever they suggest is the best treatment for us.

Are you applying any ointment after your rads?

I had a two week beak just before I was scheduled for the boosts. I didn't fight for it, my Dr. said i needed it...I was already 6 weeks in..

I asked for a break and was denied and I was black, blistered and bleeding - that was six years ago and I haven't forgiven the rad onc yet - if you need a break ask for one - if it ever happens again for me there will be a break!
