December 2014 Surgery Sisters

Hi Sandra. sending you prayers for your surgery and for your hubby too. Try not to worry too much. 4 days before my surgery my DH was in the hospital having stents in his heart. He had tried to make light of it in order not to worry me, bless him. On the morning of my own surgery he had to call down to the cardio dept himself because he was passing small blood clots in his urine. Thank God all turned out ok for him but they never did find out why there was blood in his urine. So try not to worry too much sometimes these things come to gether and we have to be very strong.

On another note girls. I notice that many surgery sisters on here seem to have a bad reaction after the surgery - vomiting and nausea. That always happened to me until I twigged myself that I might be sensitive to the morphine they usually give along with the anaesthetic. No one else had thought of this, not even the anaesthetist. Now I refuse it and ask for Pethedene(sp) instead and I'm fine afterwards. I wake up and have a much faster recovery with absolutely no nausea or breathing probs - I also had suppressed breathing with the morphine and woke up once after surgery with two nurses shaking and shouting at me to breathe. Sometimes I worry about what pain medication I can get if I ever have serous pain problems - end of life issues, etc. Even with anti-emetics (I think they're called) which are supposed to stop you vomiting after being given morphine, it didn't work for me.
Just a thought for you......

Hey, everybody! I'm home from my exchange and fat grafting. Got home around 2PM. No drains and just surgical bra. He did do a little lipo on my flanks (bad brusiing), but no compression garment, so I will have to keep an eye on those areas. Kinda high on pain meds, so I will post better later on.
-
I have bad reactions to morphine as well and now ask for other pain meds. I've had abdominal surgeries in the past and toridol had been excellent for pain relief. I'll be discussing that with my surgeon.
-
How long does pain from moving arms/shoulders last after BMx? Went shopping with DH for less than an hour after bone scan. Fell asleep this afternoon and woke up feeling like I over did weight training. I swear all I did was push a cart and take a few light items off shelves without reaching.
Felling frustrated. Guess it's bed rest and movies again tomorrow. Have to get back to work in three weeks and haven't even done a post surgery fill yet.

is everyone else exhausted? Had surgery 7 days ago. Talked on the phone a while, took a nap. Watched a movie, took a nap. Took a shower, took a nap... feel like a slug
The only thing I have energy to do is be on my iPad
-
Glad you got to bypass the waiting room, sorry your little guy was sick. Your plate is full, managing both must be overwhelming at times.
Gentle hugs to you ((()))
-
Chloesmom, that's a big yes for me. I'm 17 days post and still tiring easy. It gets better though. Like you, my first week included lots of resting.
I listened to many of our BC sisters about taking it slow. They were right, when I pushed myself I suffered! There's some smart ladies here!
-
I was surprised how many muscles it took to push a shopping cart. I thought I was using it like a walker. I quickly realized that wasn't the case. If someone can go with you I would suggest that. Just walk for the exercise.
I had a hard time doing so little also, I made myself take it easy and my recovery progressed just as fast with less pain and exhaustion.
Good luck ladies.
-
Sandra, I am thinking of you and your husband. I pray both of you are making positive steps forward.
You deserve an uneventful recovery. Hope your daughter gets there soon she will really lift both your spirits.

Sandra: You and your family are in my prayers. Lis

What post-op exercise routines are you post MX / BMx w/ TEs on? Anyone have a link? Anyone asked for PT to help with it?
Just started to take Aleve also – is helping some, btw, didn't ask PS if I could, just my husband remembered it and pain pills were the secret post C-section, and he is right, it is an improvement
Chloesmom – Oh, you who didn't have any recon, you are out and about. I'm still hiding in my PJs. Showers hurt so badly, well actually it is the drying of my back and then getting dressed, or leaning over to pick something up, or the movement of wiping the counter.
hopefulmomof3 - good luck on Monday
sandra4611 - can't remember if I have said, keeping you and your husband in my thoughts and prayers... if not, well I am.

Hello everyone!
I had my Bilateral Mastectomy of my left breast on Dec. 17th and was up walking around just 3 hours after. I felt nauseated but never got sick, a bit of the dry heaves got me a few hours until I got the anti-nausea medications.
They said I was asking to sit up and get up as my right hip-ass area as I call it has been hurting for weeks thanks to osteoarthritis so being flat on my back for those 4 hours -- It ached me even more. My right butt cheek is still a bit numb but I am up walking around and doing OK.
I will not have any reconstruction, as I am 52 and do not mind having just the one boob. I can put a sock in my bra... I don't care! LOL
I am having trouble with the tape not sticking to me and I have spent over $30 on tape and then gauze pads and nothing has stuck to me. I should try Duct tape! Seriously that might stick to my skin.
My home health nurse came by yesterday and while her tape stuck a while, it didnt later on and was hanging on. I used my tape and its a waste of tape really.
ANY SUGGESTIONS?
I am to keep this covered until Sunday/Monday and the steri-strips will fall on their own. I can shower by Monday as well with my back to the water --
I admit that like PerAngusta, I was quite surprised looking in the mirror. I am still not able to really LOOK at my left breast area as it is NOT the same for sure but you know, THIS is the new ME. Life goes on and so must we! WE HAVE TO!! We can beat this crazy crap!
I have only cried about 8 times now during all of this since March and then MAY when I got the true diagnosis of this Infiltrating/Invasive Breast Cancer -- the one tumor was 8x9cm big, the second one was 6x3cm and my one lymph node was involved though Wednesday my surgeon took them all.
I was clinically diagnosed as a Stage 3 and once Pathology is done, I will get the true diagnosis.
I have tried to remain POSITIVE during all my chemo treatments from July and until Nov. 17th when I had my last Taxol Chemo treatment.
SO stay strong and positive girlfriends! YOU CAN DO THIS !!
If you'd like to message me, feel free to -- We all understand what you are going through as we are on our own journey going through a different section of this new life we are in....but WE HAVE LIFE and must live it each day and give thanks.
I am in quite a bit of pain despite the Percocet but I am here.
I am thinking of each of you so know this..... as you can all see we all care about each other on here...I may not respond to each of you but I read these posts and say a prayer and send you healing vibes and thoughts!!
THAT helps me as I go through this -- reading about your journey's and your daily events....
I care.... we care... KEEP SMILING !!

AJ62 your signature has you as HER2, but I don't see any targeted therapies. Did you do Herceptin and Perjetta? Also, the whole staging thing when you have pre surgery chemo confuses me. I was greater than 2cm but less than 3cm when diagnosed, but due to pre surgery chemo and targeted therapy, had no cancer left when they took the breast... so what would I be staged at??? Originally Stage 2, now... no cancer so, what stage is that??? I emailed the question to my nurse navigator and haven't gotten an answer. Call your BS and ask if you need to keep the area taped. I did recon, so saw the PS 3 days post surgery and they took the tape that was coming off, off completely. For my port it all fell off and my surgeon said, go buy more steri strips and put it back on, but forget about the gauze and 'cover' tape. So, call the emergency number for your surgeon and ask. Also, when you talk to them ask about this itching, as it sounds like you think part might be dry skin (am I correct?). You might be able to put lotion in some areas and not others.

I am taking everyone's advice and waiting until Monday when I see PS for first fill to ask. I discovered today that both pushing shopping carts and wrapping presents is not on the T-Rex list. My shoulders really hurt and I am very frustrated.
Sandra and Bippy thinking about you.

I've seen it with hundreds of women on these threads. Everyone thinks taking it easy means instead of running 2 miles and coming home to vacuum upstairs and downstairs, they cut back to 1 mile and vacuum downstairs only. To them, they really have cut down on their activity. When they hit the wall, usually the day after all the "light" housekeeping, they are the first ones to get on their soapbox and shout about what taking it easy doesn't include. Listen to them! No pushing carts or wiping counters. No doing laundry or sweeping floors. No changing bed linens. No lifting your arms above your shoulder. Your body can either heal very slowly and keep you feeling like crap because you are doing too much, or you can sit your butt down, nap, and let your body heal quickly. All your energy has to go towards healing. As a fitness instructor who never let anything slow me down, I was teaching classes when I still had drains from a hysterectomy years ago. If I could pull myself across the floor with one finger, I was "fine." This time I learned my lesson very early and have been the poster child for a compliant patient. Doing nothing means just that. Glue those arms to your side from shoulder to elbow, don't reach for anything by extending your arm, keep your arms below your shoulders. Sit, nap, go to the bathroom and then back to your chair, eat protein, drink a lot of water, and let your body heal. What you see on the outside is nothing compared to what's underneath your skin. Most women feel good at 3 weeks. Some take a week longer.
Pain can be mild or for a very few, nonexistent. Some define it a severe. Take your pain pills but try to get to where you can go with an over the counter drug during the day and only take that percoset at night. Your bowels will thank you and constipation will go away. It is directly related to pain drugs and is made worse by not drinking enough fluids. It's a miserable condition so it's worth putting up with a little discomfort by cutting back on prescription drugs.
-
hi Sandra
You are so correct. I am taking your advice because I tried to do too much today and ruin myself. My drain holes are killing me and it's all my own fault. My arms are good my sides, and if I see a Q-tip laying on the floor, it shall stay there! I realize how compulsive I can be about cleaning now. Not healthy.
-
Thanks for all the well wishes. I took every single one to heart and it really does know you have a cheering section behind you. I was released from the hospital this afternoon. My husband was released from the hospital yesterday afternoon. He was still an in-patient when I was in recovery, but signed himself out and came downstairs to be with me. What a surprise to see his face when I opened my eyes. He had just had a bone marrow biopsy a few hours before! By the time I was settled in my room a couple hours later, he was back - officially released. We had thought he would be in another day or two, but all the testing they did on Wednesday and Thursday failed to find a diagnosis so a hematologist was called in. She suspects bone marrow cancer but it's not a sure thing. The bone marrow she harvested yesterday was sent to three labs for specialty testing so hopefully it won't be cancer but will be something weird that can be cured by drinking something yucky or checking into a sweat lodge.
His pelvis is sore but he is feeling much better since he got some blood transfusions. His hemoglobin was a 6 but is now an 8 - still low, but he's no longer collapsing in elevators!
I feel fine as long as I have my Tylenol. Due to the fat grafting, my chest and upper abdomen feel like they are on fire if I move. The incisions under my left arm are still painless due to Exparel, a wonderful foam anesthetic that lasts 72-96 hours. So this was the LAST surgery. The 6th time was the charm!
-
Sandra, will continue to pray for your husband and for your recovery. Thank you for all the recoverythromycin advice as well.

Knmtwins -- I was told I was HER +, though I would have to find that paperwork from months back where the Doctor wrote that down. The ER and PR is all I recall. I do not recall any targeted therapies other than the Neulasta which was for infections? And the chemo, AC and T. And the one lymph node that was lit up in the PET scan.
On my hospital discharge paper work it stated I had Infiltrating/Invasive Ductal Carcinoma.
The pre-staging was just based on the size of this one tumor I had had. It shrunk down to about 4cm, so I do not know what stage I will be once pathology goes through my lymph nodes and all that.
I am only itching a little though its annoying. Its where the tape is in the back on the side. I can later use this special cream I had made thanks to my surgeon for pain and itching but I am to wait a few weeks before using that on the area. Ice packs are helping at the moment. It's weird cause this area is still so numb in parts.
I am not starting radiation until the end of Jan. or beginning of Feb.,as my Doctor says she wants me to be healed up a bit more before I start on that.
I will have to pick up some steri strips being they sure do stick to the skin well. At least they DO work!
Thanks for suggesting them as I was not even thinking along those lines, I was trying to figure out what other type of tape can I use to keep this gauze on here!
Take care ----

Sandra,
Am sending prayers to you and hubby. Glad you are doing okay, what a terrible few days. you have really helped me to see i need to stop doing stuff! I am listening and doing better now.
Aj, hoping you continue doing well. Are you using ice packs on a drain incision? I would love to do that! They feel very like fire when perturbed. I am doing tylenol half and half with pain meds today. Much better since i quit DOING stuff. My DH is amazing, he is all up in my drains, redresses and strips them, sees my chest, and just says he wants me alive, all this is temporary and I need not worry bout him. What a relief to know he is here. He makes me miralax, puts warm clean socks on my feet, and feeds me every meal! We are together 27 years.
When this is over, i am takin him to vegas
-
Bippy, I would keep that guy! He is one of a kind. So many guys run like the wind.
-
Sandra, thinking of you and your husband, and also supremely grateful for you sharing your been there, done that advice. I really need to take it to heart and remember it next month. Maybe I'll start practicing a T-rex left arm now, ha ha.
-
cassie, hah, you and I are C-rex ! My real name begins with a C also. It fits well too, as I got so cranky I wanted to bite.and I feel about as purdy
Take care all surgery sisters. Hope all are okay, sorry I am so focused on myself right now.
-
Bippy, you continue to keep your selfishness. It is your job to stay focused on you right now. This will speed up your healing then you can pay back to others later.
Happy healing.

Bippy are our husbands twins? I am so blessed Ditto your post:

I haven't taken Tylenol in a week since 2 days after surgery, but today the drains are really hurting. Before they hurt if I moved them. Now they just sting. I don't know if it's part of the healing process or if I have been doing too much. See the doctor tomorrow. Drainage is minimal. Anxious to see just how much the drainage has to decrease to before they consider pulling them, I still have seromas but they are on my sides not the chest where the drains are
-
Thinking of all you wonderful women today !
Warm wishes from the Mods
-
Chloesmom,
Hope you get your drains out tomorrow. I guess I lucked out in getting mine out early. Sutures pulled out on one side and PS took them all out.
Bippy, my husband is a blessing as well. We've been together 23 years. He's picked up a lot of the slack around here for the past three weeks and even wrapped the presents last night. I managed only his.
Hoping we all get some rest and feel better this week.
