Whole breast radiation?

My oncologist said i would need whole breast radiation if I have a lumpectomy because I am young. Is whole breast radiation more radiation to your body? And are the side effects worse? Thanks!

    Hi Ocean Girl,

    I'm about to start whole breast radiation Dec. 29th, and if I believe what the radiation oncologist said it is just focused on the breast and they have high tech ways to keep it that way. On the other hand I've read on these boards an idea that there can be some spread of the radiation. I guess ask your doctor because I'm not certain. Sorry, I can;t be of more help.

    Radiation treatment these days is very focused and computer-driven to minimize it's impact on your body while still giving you what you need to kill any stray cancer cells in your breast. You will, probably, have a CT scan prior to starting treatment, which will be run through a computer simulation to ensure that everything is as safe as possible.

    Thanks everyone! I found out for sure I can get a lumpectomy yesterday. I went to a teaching hospital 2.5 hours away and got so much better advice than from the local doctors. All the doctors talked together and made a decision. I am so relieved! And I think radiation therapy will be worth it.
