Hello to all. My name is Chassity. My mom is 58 and was diagnosed with breast cancer 2 weeks ago today. The tumor is 2.5 cm and her surgeon has given her the option of a lumpectomy with 6 weeks of radiation, which is scheduled for December 29th, or a mastectomy. The surgeon seemed to think he could get it all with a lumpectomy vs mastectomy. He called today and wanted her to have a liver ultrasound before her surgery. Is this normal? Also, what stage would a 2.5 cm tumor be? This is all new to both of us. Thank you in advance for your help. :-)

Sorry to hear about your mom, but glad you found this forum to post questions to the knowledgeable and experienced here.

From your description, we can't be sure what type of breast cancer your mother has as there are a number of types that this could fit.

If you could be more specific as to the actual type, it would make responses easier, and referral to type specific information possible.

It is a very stressful time for all and we hope it all goes well for your mom.

My mom hasn't gotten the full pathology report back yet, but the liver ultrasound looks good, according to the technologist. Her diagnosis is Low Grade Infiltrating Ductal Carcinoma. Thanks for your reply!
