Post Oophorectomy Blues
Hello Ladies..
Ive been absent for a while, as I've been pretty much in the thick of things, surgery & treatment wise, as well as some very intense personal & family issues.
I'm really after some advice
On Monday, December 1st, I had a bilateral salpingo oophorectomy. This was done laparoscopically (sp)
Prior to the surgery, I had been getting monthly zolodex shots for 4 months, and had tried arimidex (as I'm intolerant tamoxifen - I am - or was - premenopausal) I had to stop arimidex too, as it made me very sick. Zolodex gave me quite noticable hot flashes, but nothing much else in the way of side effects.
Immediately following the surgery, I had not a single hot flash for the 1st few days, and silly me... Thought, wow! I'll take this... The pain from surgery was quite bad, much worse than I expected, but I figured it would soon pass.
Almost 2 weeks out now, and I'm a mess. Around day 4.. The hot flashes returned with gusto! Soooo much more intense, and occurring literally every ten minutes or so.. Day and night. A single sip of coffee, the slightest exertion, even just turning over in bed, has me sweating like I've just run a full marathon. Absolutely no exaggeration, it's miserable.
The pain from surgery is still there, no where near as bad as immediately afterwards, but a dull constant ache, with sudden sharpness, despite high dose codeine. My incisions however, have healed to being barely noticeable. And the horror that is my stomach!! It's swollen to 3 times the size it was, with no signs of deflating. I realise that the gas they use to inflate you inside, plus surgery swelling will cause this to a degree, but really??? I look about to give birth! Which in itself would be a medical miracle, without the surgery, but... Lets not go there :-)
I would really love to hear from anyone who has been through or is going through recovery from this surgery and has any tips for me. Particularly regarding the hot flashes, and swelly belly.. Because right now all I want to do is curl up in bed and never resurface.
Oh and I started femera yesterday (!) with anti nausea meds as a chaser..
I am also awaiting a repeat MRI on my pelvis. To check 2 spots in my bones that appear abnormal. This will be done Jan 8th..
Thankyou for reading

I had a complete HX on Sept 29th. The hot flashes hit me around day 4 also. They really affected my sleep. So I finally started on Prozac two weeks ago. I think the HF's are getting less, but I need to give it 4-6 weeks for a good trial. There is a thread called the Hot Flash Forum. You might look there for some tips. Other non-hormonal meds are Effexor, Paxil, Neurontin.
As far as swelly belly,,, I didn't have that issue. The gas should have been absorbed by now and I would check with your doctor about that. Likewise with the pain. How are your bowels? Pardon me for being so personal, but they move them around to access the female organs and moving them back can sometimes cause issues. Adhesions and such. There are PT's who are trained to treat that, if that is your issue. Any pain when you poop? Definitely check with your doctor about your symptoms.

I think you should talk to your doctor too. I had laproscopic surgery years ago (tubal ligation after my last child) and don't remember having a swollen belly for more than a day or so.

I also had a lap ooph and although the right incision was more sore than I expected for longer than I expected it resolved within a week or two. Very little swelling. Your swelling is a concern and I agree you should call the doc unless you are constipated in which case you can treat that yourself. Hope this helps! Let us know how your doing.

Wambles, I went through chemo-induced menopause and what you described - the hot flashes every 10 minutes, no sleeping, etc are exactly what I went through. I had no idea how to dress! We live in MN. It was -7 here and I was too hot to wear a coat to the car. The hot flashes are finally starting to slow down, just in time for me to get my ovaries out on Feb 5th. My Onco-gyno doctor says I may or may not start the hot flash business all over again. Its up to my body to decide what to do. UGH! Not looking forward to do thing that all over again. Not to mention the mood swings. My poor family!

Hey noonrider I saw this topic and was hoping to talk with someone else going through this. I had my BSO at the same time I had my MX in November. I thought I was going crazy - I knew to expect hot flashes, and my emotions are a little wonky but this not sleeping is for the birds!!! No matter what I do I cannot get to sleep much before 2am, sometimes closer to 4 and I take heavy duty sleep aids due to sleep issues before surgery lol. Since your surgery was several months before mine, I'm just wondering does it get any better or is this now life as I will need to know it? 😛

Hi everyone,
I am BRCA+ and had a prophylactic oophorectomy at the beginning of November. At first I felt just like you did - my stomach was swollen for much longer than the 1-2 weeks than they said, so much that I couldn't wear proper trousers and even my yoga pants were uncomfortable. Fortunately that disappeared after a month or so and now my stomach is back to normal and the bloating is gone. If you still have this more than a month after the surgery I do think a call to the doctor is in order.
As for the hot flashes, I've been on tamoxifen for the last 3 years so I thought I'd been through the worst of it. Hah! They were so much worse after the surgery. I couldn't sleep, kept waking up because I was hot, then cold, then hot, then cold... horrible. Happily, just as I was starting to despair, most of that has now passed and they are much much better. But not gone entirely. It's different with every person, I hear, some people have an easy time of it and some really struggle. I guess you don't know which one you are until the time comes...
My issue now is the OTHER stuff that comes along with this. I'm only 48. Am I ever going to have sex again? It is really really painful and that is just depressing.
If anyone has any advice on that I'd love to hear it!
Thanks and I hope you are better already. Good luck.

My gynecologic oncologist told me I could take A pill called Osphena He made it sound like it was a completely non hormonal pill that only targets the vaginal dryness issue. I am an 18 TN survivor and recently had a PMX and BSO due to BRCA2+. I had my uterus out 4 years ago...
I just googled it and not so sure about this product. It DOES decrease vaginal dryness because It is a selective estrogen receptor modulator or SERM. This medication is similar to Tamoxifen and Raloxifene.
Side effects include but are not limited to uterine cancer, blood clots, stroke... Hot flashes, muscle spasms and excessive sweating (because we all need that, right?)
I'm bummed. He really made it sound like a magic bullet
Has anyone taken this and if so, has it worked? Sounds like the side effects are horrendous but maybe they just have to list everything because that's how it is nowadays...

Oh and by the way, I started taking melatonin 5mg before I go to bed and now sleep about 95% better. Fall asleep and only wake up a couple of times a night to have a sip of ice water and throw the covers off )or back on...)
