Recurrence Rates by Stage - 5 and 10 years ??
Does anyone know of a study that provides recurrence rates by stage? I saw one from 2008 in an Oncology journal but it didn't break down by stage and it was ambiguous.
Anyone know recurrence rates for stage III ladies?

Katarina

Hi Katarina - Here are a couple of tools to check out.

I also used https://www.adjuvantonline.com/index.jsp
Take care!

Katarina, I'm not exactly answering your question, but these are important statistics.
Approximately 30% of people diagnosed with breast cancer will progress to Stage 4 during the course of their disease.
Approximately 6% are initially diagnosed at Stage 4.
So, roughly 36% will ultimately end up Stage 4.
Approximately 3% of funds allocated to BC Research are targeted to Stage 4 research.
Stage 4 folks need help from the lower stages to disseminate this information and help us advocate for a higher level of research for Stage 4. Advocating today may help you save your own life years from now!
I think we'd all prefer to be on the side of Stage 4 longevity statistics rather than on the mortality side...

Thank you FarmerLucy and She!!
This is just what I was looking for. I appreciate the help.

I'm too scared to look at recurrence rates. I wish I wasn't but I am.

There is nothing wrong with censoring the information you read. The first thing my gynecologist said after my diagnosis was don't go on line and look up a bunch of stuff or you'll scare yourself. Good advice. I'm very careful what I expose myself to.

"Stage 4 folks need help from the lower stages to disseminate this information and help us advocate for a higher level of research for Stage 4. Advocating today may help you save your own life years from now!"
I agree. How is the best way to do this?

Only 3% of BC reasearch funds are spent to help stage 4 survivors!!!
This industry shame should be a forum unto itself. This is so unacceptable.
Why is this?

I wonder if those of us who have been treated for Breast Cancer start writing the various foundations and asking for them to fund research for stage 3 and 4 cancers, if they might redirect funds to do that? I get so frustrated when I am asked for money to help raise "awareness" about breast cancer when nearly every woman alive is very aware of it already. In my opinion, money used for awareness campaigns ought to be used for research.

Katarina, the numbers are never really up to date.
The latest big breast cancer trials are known as SOFT and TEXT, done in younger women. They actually had trouble finishing the studies as women did not recur often enough!
You might be able to extrapolate [more current] numbers you are looking for from SOFT. They broke the women into subgroups of "had chemo", "didn't have chemo"
http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1412379
Recurrence rates in these premenopausal women were 9% over 6 years. Most of those were local recurrences. 1.5% metastases rate [total] over 6 years. That's if you were advanced enough stage to need chemotherapy (if I read the figure right).
All that said, the rates would be different for older women. Lower, actually.
