DIEP 2015
OK, following on the very successful model set by the DIEP 2014 thread, here's one for 2015!
In 2014, Nihahi wrote: Welcome to the 2014 thread. We plan to be here in years to come, for women who may find themselves on the same road.

Great idea Morwenna! Incredible how fast time flies, 2015 is almost here. Thank you starting this thread.

Hopefully I will have a DIEP date after my consult tomorrow . I have a back-up consult on the 19th as well. This surgery has been put off for two years so I'm excited!
-
Let us know when you know, SheriCola
I've swiped the 2015 names from the 2014 thread as well, hope that's OK
-
Hi SheriCola! I've got a surgery date scheduled for March. Pretty nervous, but been reading the 2014 boards and that has helped a lot. Knowing what to expect makes all the difference. I'm excited for you that you're moving ahead on your surgery. Looks like you've been waiting a while. I also see you're TN, like me. Sucky, for sure, but you've already got a couple years under your belt! Good luck on your consult!
-
I'm triple negative as well. Yay us!
-
Norwenna.
Looks like you and I are going at the same time..I can't believe how fast the time is going. Am looking forward to this being all over with.
I had my pre-appointment CT scan , everythink looks good. My PS did tell me she was concerned about how thin my skin is on my radiated side and that it could break open. It won't change anything as far as the surgery is concerned but if it does happen I will need the dang expander removed. Oh how I hate these things..
If I only would have known back then I was going this route, I would never have had to have them.
Anyway, I have been ordered to take it very easy and not do anything that would cause it to bust open, so yes I am using it as an excuse to not have to vacuum or shovel or anything else that might put some pressure on my chest.
-
What time zone is Mayo Clinic Annie? You might technically be before me! Calgary is Mountain Time
-
haha...I am in Central time Morwenna, as this is the Mayo Cinic in MN, so I think you are an hour ahead of me. I don't know what time my surgery is yet, I call the night before to see what time I need to be there. I am the only surgery she will be doing that day, and since it is such a long procedure, I am hoping it will start quite early.. I know I am not supposed to eat anything after midnight, but I can drink up to two hours before surgery. -
Same here. I have to call as well, but preparing myself for crack of stupid o clock as there's always admission stuff to get through, and I imagine they'll want to crack on with the surgery.
Mountain time is just east of Pacific coastal time btw, so I think you must be ahead of me time zone wise
-
Hi gang....I heard Mo had started the 2015 "class of tummy recon", so just popping in to say "safe surgeries and gentle healing to you all". I'm betting you'll make some amazing, life long friends on this journey....Be patient, celebrate the small stuff....it's a hell of a ride, but can be sooooo worth it. Hugs!!!

Bumping and updating

Hi Ladies,
So I haven't scheduled anything yet. The 1st PS gave me the go ahead to get the surgery whenever I decide to do so, but personally I want to lose some weight beforehand. I'm not exactly confident when it comes to completing that goal. I gained 55 lbs due to treatment/depression and I've only lost 5 lbs - but I can't say that I've really tried . Anywho, I have a 2nd consult in a few days. I'll be deciding between Dr. Chang in Baltimore and Dr. Nahabedian in VA/DC. I will probably shoot for surgery between March and May.
-
Hi Shericola, it is my first time on this forum. As for the DIEP and wanting to lose weight. I had my DIEP one year ago tomorrow!Yay! I also gained a lot of weight while on chemotherapy. I did NOT lose the weight like I wanted and was upset about it. Thankfully, the weight gain provided me with enough fat and skin for two beautiful small D cup breasts! In retrospect, losing the weight may have not given me the size I was hoping for. I lost around 12 lbs after the surgery and I lost about 6 lbs after stage 2. If you want to lose weight for safety reasons, I completely understand. The surgery is long (12.5 hours for me) and the recovery is doable, but trying. I would do it over and over if I had to! I love my results! The best advice I can give is to exercise and tighten your leg and back muscles. Good luck and congratulations on being close to the end of your journey!
-
Howdy fellow diep sisters. Got my surgery date in February (only 8 weeks away). My CT showed small, but acceptable vessels. My PS said my larger ones were too high or too low, but he can work with what I have.
-
I think if you are trying to lose weight Sheri, the best approach is something not too drastic.
The last time I saw my PS I admitted that I had hoped to lose weight over the summer, with dragon boat race training twice a week, but I was ashamed to admit the weight had crept ON if anything.
This, to be honest, was all down to allowing "the occasional treat", to become a habit! Anyway, he gently pointed out that if I could "get a handle on" my weight, it would present less of a risk as regards my history of blood clots.
Yes, I thought, not to mention that being overweight made my indigestion/GERD worse, and exacerbated my lymphedema, as well as increasing my risk of cancer recurrence.
I just gave myself a mental shake and decided well I had less than 2 months to be firm with myself and get some weight off. And so I'm eating breakfast of cereal or oatmeal with berries and Greek yogurt, then unlimited fruit and veg, nuts, maybe a small piece of cheese at lunch-time, and a nice supper of an appropriate portion size. I'm avoiding bread, cakes and cookies or candies, oh and alcohol (sob), and I have lost about 7-8 lb in 3 weeks, so if I don't go crazy (arghhhh CHRISTMAS!!!) over the next few weeks I should be able to drop some more before Jan 6.
I know its not easy to make changes, and if you are suffering from stress or depression it is even harder! But its like quitting smoking. Nobody can make you do it. The motivation has to come from inside, and then you just decide to do it. It's easy to fall off the wagon along the way, and we are all here to encourage each other! There's even a weight loss thread ..... the Wednesday Weigh-in, or something!
And if things slip a bit, don't beat yourself up or feel that you failed. Just be kind to yourself, and say "OK I ate 3 Twixes in a row yesterday, and felt really sick, but hey-Ho, that's my blow out for the week, so back to the salads today!!"
Many find various weight loss programs are helpful, and I think that's mostly the accountability aspect, but in the end, you have to do it for yourself eh?!
One thing to consider, so I'm told, is that if you lose weight post surgery, your new boobs will also lose weight! So I think that has to be balanced against making sure you have enough "spare tire" to fashion your new body parts!
Here's to us all *raises a cup of herbal tea*

Thanks for moving my date over, Morweena. I'm just over 5 weeks away from my uni-DIEP to correct necrosis from my SGAP back in 2012. It feels like it is just around the corner, but there is plenty to keep me distracted like cramming extra work hours in, getting ready for the holidays, and making travel arrangements. I'd hoped to be 12 lbs down by now instead of another 10 lbs up, but as they say too often on the West Coast, "it is what it is."
I hope you are all getting ready for a wonderful holiday! 2015 will be interesting! I hope it will be a year of successful surgeries and moving past this nonsense for us all!
-
Morwenna, please add me in, my surgery will be 1/29/15, left prophylactic mastectomy + bilateral DIEP flap. Learn alot from the DIEP 2014 but still very nervous about the surgery.... will see PS again day before surgery.. BS still want me to do a mammogram & MRI with contrast on left breast before the surgery. Not crazy about the MRI still can't raise my right arm too high after the right Mx a year ago..... Anyone have advice on how to get in & out of bed the 1st couple weeks after surgery ? and when should I start PT after the surgery ? thanks -
Done!
I hear you on the MRI! My left shoulder had a very minor restriction since my Mx, but 45 minutes prone with my arms above my head near killed me in October when I had my MRI!
Since then I have had ongoing rotator cuff issues, and since shovelling snow a couple of weeks back I've had tennis elbow symptoms too!
See if they'll let you adopt a modified position to accommodate your stiff shoulder! They must be used to it. Just don't grit your teeth and bear it, as I did, if you have a choice. It's not worth it!
Following flap surgery arm raising is limited to shoulder height for the first 3 weeks or so, so I feel we are sitting ducks to develop frozen shoulder coming out of this!
Get to physio as soon as you are allowed to do range of motion exercises, especially if you don't feel you are progressing on your own!
-
I was an athlete and after shreading my rotator cuff at age 54, ending up having extensive shoulder repair surgery. My shoulder must be supported a certain way or it'll be incompacitated and require PT. So far, the OR RN and Anesthesiologists have made sure we place it correctly supported by padding from a folded pillow case. Because I was going to be sat up during the BMX, the nurse had me sit up and lie back to make sure it was positioned okay before I went to sleep. I did fine.
So let them know what your problem is and they will work with you.

Hello all,
I have been reading this site since my diagnosis in June 2012. I had a L Mastectomey. I am due to have my recon on Monday Feb 23 2015 at the Univof Colorado in Aurora by Dr Joyce Aycock. I am planning on a DIEP. I need the left reconstructed the right will be a prop with reduction. Even after speaking with the doctor twice, I still second guess my choice. I am just so confused. I know they will never look normalagain. But what are the scars going to be like. I am young, and tired of wearing high neck shirts. Please help.
Thankyou
V
-
Hi V,
Just wanted to check which month your surgery is to be, as you told me January .....
As for scars, if you google DIEP (images) you can find photos to get an idea how the scars go.
There is also a photo gallery here, but its not part of the discussion board and is private, so you need to "apply" for access. If I get time I will post the link, but I think it is a "sticky thread" in the breast reconstruction forum.
I think the scarring on the breast/s is rather dependent on how much skin was taken in the mastectomy, but you have a circular or elliptical area or "island" of transplanted skin and tissue from the donor site (tummy in our case).
The "lift and tuck" side has different scarring again, but again you should be able to find images. Then you have a scar right across your lower abdomen, roughly bikini line, and an incision around your belly button as they have to cut that out to move the skin over it, then pop it out in the right place!
I've seen photos of ladies looking stunning in bikinis, although I think my bikini days are long gone, even with a "tummy tuck"!!

Hi everyone
I would like to join this group. Morwenna was gracious to add my DIEP surgery date, I will also be having a prophylactic mastectomy for my left breast at the same time. I haven't read the posts on this thread yet but I look forward to getting to know all of you as we go through this year together.
-
I hadn't realized it was such an auspicious date Websister! How very apt!
-
Something about the date was niggling at the back of my mind when they gave it to me and then I realized yesterday afternoon why. Seems to be fitting that three years after the biopsy I will have the surgery that will help to bring some closure. Still a very sobering decision to go forward with this as Rangerwife74 indicates with her post
-
I was reading around and discovered this little website which some of you may be interested to look at ....... http://www.breastreconstruction.org/index.htm
It has some nice succinct advice. All grist to the mill, as we say in Old Blighty
-
January 15..... goodrhue............ unilateral DIEP ......Charleston (Dr. Craigie)
so ready to get this done!!!!
-
Thanks goodrhue, I've added you to the timeline.
Does everyone plan on getting much equipment in place, or are you just going to wing it?
I purchased a little stool for the shower (Walmart) and I have reserved a powered lift chair to rent, as I want to be independent asap at home and let dh get back to earning his keep!
I have looked into where I can get a raised toilet seat, and also considered changing the shower head to a hand-held, but decided to wait and see if I need these things. A friend said she used a walker for the first little while, but again, I think I'll wait and see how I am ..... I did invest in one of those "reading pillows" with little extensions for the arms .....
-
Just two weeks away Morweena. The time is coming up fast. I am getting a little anxious. I know next month is going to suck but I just keep telling myself, it is only a month.
I am bringing my recliner down to MN with me since I will be down there for 3 weeks. Might as well try to be as comfortable as I can. The rest, I am just going to wing it. I will have my daughters down there taking turns so if I need anything they run get it for me.
I think I will just sleep for 3 weeks !!!! Wake up and feel 100% !!!!!!
-
Sounds like a plan Annie! Good luck with that!!!
