    Hi,

Sulforaphane is a compound found in broccoli. It highly concentrated in sprouted broccoli. This doctor Paul Talalay from John Hopkins did a research on how it affects cancer. University of Michigan Breast Cancer Center also did a study on it. if you google you will find a blog from a lady who is using it that who went through the UM Breast Cancer Center. I was wondering if anyone uses this supplement.. I had precancerous cells and I don't want to take tamoxifen because i'm one of those people that are susceptible to the bad side effects of drugs..

    thank you jstpddle.

So your question is about taking it as someone who has a not been diagnosed with breast cancer, if we are understanding correctly.

I use a product called Broccomax which is a capsule of broccoli sprout powder. I can't comment on its efficacy as compared to Tamoxifen, but my naturopathic oncologist thought it was worthwhile to add it to the list of other supplements I am taking

If you go to the product's website, you will see they claim "BroccoMax® contains a standardized concentration of sulforaphane glucosinolate extracted (without solvents) from broccoli seeds". There is no such chemical entity as 'sulforaphane glucosinolate'; this is a marketing term which would have you believe the product provides sulforaphane. It doesnt. It is an extract in which the essential myrosinase enzyme has been deactivated, leaving only the precursor compound, 'glucoraphanin' - this is inert and unable to produced sulforaphane. This fact has been published in the scientific literature - see page 2 where the product has even been named. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC318310... Best to look for a 100% whole myrosinase-active broccoli sprout powder or capsule.

As for Tamoxifen, this drug has 2 actions which explain its effect in breast cancer prevention. 1. It is a 'Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator' which blocks the estrogen receptor to prevent estrogen hormone from activating the cell proliferation which can led to cancer. 2. It activates the expression of a large range of protective genes. However, in this action, it is very much weaker than sulforaphane.

No-one has done any research to compare Tamoxifen with sulforaphane, so it could be risky to substitute one for the other. Even though Tamoxifen has side effects which adversely affect some people, it does have a history of use in breast cancer prevention whereas we really don't have the evidence to be sure that Sulforaphane alone offers sufficient protection. There is probably no reason not to take the two together, so perhaps this is a strategy worth considering - but do be sure the supplement you take is not an 'extract' such as the one you named.

Grow them yourself. I've lost track of how many times sprouts have been recalled for E-Coli contamination. It seems there's not a place on earth were you can buy clean good food anymore.

Christine, very informative insights on the Broccomax. It appears I have been wasting my $$. Thanks for this. Off to buy sprouts at my local health food store
