Just got diagnosed today

Hi -- I am brand new here. I just found out today that I have breast cancer. I will get more information on Monday, when I meet with my doctor, as far as what kind of breast cancer. I do know that it is "ductal" and that there is nothing in my breast lymph nodes, so that is good.

Not looking for information about treatment just yet -- I will probably have questions after meeting with my doctor in a few days. Right now I'm just feeling kind of in a numb shock. I am not in a high risk category and have a pretty healthy lifestyle. I've had a lifelong fear of cancer, though, maybe because of the media, or maybe because I've heard horror stories from others about the treatment. So I figure, if cancer is one of my biggest fears, and I've just been diagnosed, well I guess I have very little left to fear!

Some other things about me: I am in my early 40s and just finally got married for the first time 6 months ago. (I am in a same-sex marriage and only recently was legally able to get married). Then after our wedding, we moved to a new state so my spouse could take a job. I am in the middle of a business startup, on top of it all! It's been a whirlwind year, mostly in a good way, and deep down I feel like my body just needs to stop and regroup.

I'm here mainly to remind myself that I'm not alone. Cancer is something lots of people have, and lots of people go through. I am looking forward to getting support here while I give support to others. Thanks for listening.

    Hi Lucy,

    Welcome to BCO.....someplace we never thought we would be but here we are! There is a lot of information here and also a lot of support and knowledge. Collectively, this community knows more about BC than most doctors do! Please take advantage of the many posts and resources available to you so you never have to feel alone in your journey. Take everything ONE DAY AT A TIME so you don't become overwhelmed and try to bring someone with you to key appointments because you may tend to forget to listen! Trust me on that because even if you are usually very attentive, this stuff has a tendency to scare you enough so that you forget what your doctor said.

    In no time you will have a plan and then it is the hurry up and wait stuff. But, it does get easier when you know what will happen and when. I wish you the very best and may you never have to deal with BC again after you complete treatment. Take good care and congrats on your recent wedding.

    Hello Lucy, So sorry you have been diagnosed with BC, it just plain sucks! But it sounds like you have support and that is so important, and there is always a wealth of support here on BCO. Do not fear your cancer or treatment...I am a very strong believer in positive thinking promotes healing, and there are some wonderful drugs that really smart people developed that will kill your cancer! There have been great strides made in anti nausea meds that will help with side effects should you have chemo. Good luck moving forward from here, and hugs to you.

    Congrats on the recent wedding.....sorry you had to join us.  I am glad you found this site though.  There are so many amazing women here ready to support you and offer friendship.  The beginning is the hardest part.  I also was in my 40's at dx and we moved to a new state a few months after I finished chemo.  I was still doing reconstruction so I had to find new surgeons.  I was also starting up a business!  Too much in common!  Just know it has been almost 4 years for me since my diagnosis.  Life is back to normal and I feel great.  Once you get through the beginning part of diagnosis and developing a treatment plan, you can start to knock out each phase of this crap one by one.  It somehow gets a little easier when you start actually doing something than waiting in limbo and fear.  Hugs!  Best of luck to you!

    I was recently diagnosed with IDC and I am recovering very well from mastectomy (right side) surgery. I am anxiously awaiting my first meeting with an Oncologist. That should take place within the next 2 weeks. I have to say that the information I have found on this website has a helped me keep my anxiety levels more manageable for sure! I'm very grateful.     Hi Lucy RV6Gal, Welcome to BCO. So sorry you have to be here, but it is the best place to be when you get this awful news and Dx.

    As always there is great insight and advice by the others who have come to welcome you. This place is filled with women who all know just how you feel and who are here to pay it forward. We all wandered in here, looking for help and support and found friends, who were willing to share their experiences.

    Unfortunately, you'll find that many of the women here were in a really low risk category, being women seems to be about the main thread for most of us, although there are some men here too.

    RV, I see you've had a Umx and SNB, I opted for that too, although I had a different Dx to you, but I didn't need any further treatment, after my final path came in. I hope you are healing well.
