Message to my family: if it needs dusting I don't want it.
-
Way to go, Wren!
-
I'm wondering how I can snag the Barrister's Bookcases at FIL's house. They are made of oak, with the sliding glass covers that lift up and over to access the books. I don't think they are antiques.
But our house is light and beachy. How do you think these would look if I stripped off the dark oak and either whitewashed them or painted them cream to match our beachy bedroom furniture?
The master bedroom is pale blue, with a large sitting area with chairs and bookcases. The furniture is white cottage style.
The reason I ask is because books are one of the worst things you can have in a bedroom (besides carpeting and drapes) if you have asthma. They collect tons of dust. I love my books, and I have a gazillion of them, but don't want them out on open shelves.
How do you think the Barristers bookcases would look whitewashed or painted?
Here's what they look like now...
Here's what they would look like finished...
What do you think?

I would probably use them as is. But my father thought it was a mortal sin to paint wood, so that is probably influencing my choice. I think painting makes it look more IKEA. But it's your bedroom, so if you want it light, so be it.

Oh goodness Blessings - I've always liked natural wood best. But your picture of the white room is pretty.
-
It would look nice as natural wood, but might not be possible depending on how it was finished originally. We moved into a house with dark kitchen cabinets (and all avocado walls and ceiling). I was so happy when we started stripping and found the dark color was part of the varnish and we were able to get back to natural wood.
-
Wren, I'm laughing about your dad. My dad was a home builder, and we're in the midwest where there is lots of hardwood used for everything. I'm pretty sure I could never have my dad to my house if I dared to paint the woodwork! LOL

Why go to all that work? Put a couple of white or blue vases or picture frames in and/or on the bookcase, and a couple of wooden picture frames on your night table or dresser. If you're really getting into it, add a pillow or throw that is a gold or brown print or solid, maybe with white and/or blue in the pattern. Your beautiful piece of wooden furniture will integrate just fine.
-
I vote white or whitewashed. I am stuck in a house with all older dark woods and I dream of white wood.
-
Blessing - how nice you've drawn us all out of the woodwork - no pun intended.
I feel so guilty that I've fallen off the sorting & tossing track. Must at least do some serious tidying this weekend. My BFF who's husband died two weeks ago will be coming to town to stay a couple of days each of the next few weeks. The guest bed is covered with all the Christmas shopping.
-
I am trying to convince my husband that we should move (reduce some debt) but there is no way I will ever convince him with the current condition of the house. So, I plan on spending this winter doing a slow purge. One room at a time.

I have two rooms that have priority right now. Our bedroom and our spare bedroom. The spare is more like a storage room with a bed in it at this point! My son works here on the weekends (he is a caregiver for some of our kids who are disabled) and thats where he stays. I'm sure he would appreciate not being in the horde. LOL

My hospital has a patient portal where I can find all my tests and doctors' notes. I don't print anything. If I did, there'd just be one more messy, sloppy pile somewhere on, under, or around my desk.
-
I was diagnosed two days after bringing home our newly adopted daughter. Her adoption documents got "dropped" somewhere in the house. I know I had them when I applied for her Social Security Number in June or so. Now if I could just isolate WHERE in the house those documents are. Surely they are in a pile, or a laundry basket or grocery bag full of papers that were shoved away quick when someone was coming to the house. So very frustrated with myself.
-
I noticed, many, many years ago, when I move from an apartment to a house, that having more than one place to stash stuff was dangerous! Multiple junk drawers! Multiple places to shove a laundry basket or stack of papers! And, of course, I have no self discipline when it comes to organizaiton.
