I'm here.  Have missed so many pages that I will try to jump back in.

    Jasper is adorable!

I was privileged to  join DS and DIL for an ultrasound yesterday evening.  We are having a girl!  This will be grandchild #8 and our fourth girl!  Cannot wait until February!  We will be baking a reveal cake on Saturday for the rest of the family.

Oh no - it's not almost focktober, is it?!

Congrats to everyone enjoying new babies or anticipating new babies!

My babies just went off to college...

DD got kicked out of her school - but can still play in the band, which she loves.  She is now going to the university down the street - smaller - hopefully the professors actually teach.  doesn't seem to be the trend.  She took a class at community college over the summer - professor said he was just another "tool" for them to use - he wasn't going to spoon-feed them.  Well - he's a tool all right.  If you won't teach at this level - when are kids supposed to actually be taught?  My kids' teachers have been shirking on teaching - "preparing" them for future educational levels when more will be expected of them.  End result was that they were never taught and were not the least bit prepared for the future and fell further and further behind in school.  So now we get to pay thousands and thousands of dollars trying to get an education for them- and it will take them longer to get it - IF they get one at all.  Sad.

DD applied to the new college when she finally heard old college kicked her out.  Her GPA was just below the cutoff.  New college said she needed to take a few classes and get good grades to demonstrate ability.  She took that class over the summer to fulfill a prerequisite so she could retake a class she actually passed at old college, but not with a good grade.  She got a B this summer.  Then when she contacted new college to register for the next class once she received her grade from community college, new college suggested that she contact admissions to see if they would accept her - and they did.

Bad thing is - we already rented an apartment for her so she could take classes at new college as a continuing ed student and be near old college for band (it's a class, so she can take it and still be in it).  So it will cost a lot more for her to go to school this year than if she had been accepted in June and had been able to live on campus at new college...  Ugh.

Nothing has been easy trying to help her continue going to college.  I just hope to God our efforts have not been in vain.

Now to see how DS does...he's not terribly motivated.  He wants to do it - he's just not big on putting enough effort into it...

So between sucking at my job I will never be good at because my brain is broken and I can't multitask the way I need to and trying to get the kids ready for school, there went my summer.  I can't believe it's over.  I missed it!

And I still have ironing to do to get the rest of DD's clothes the way I want them before I release them to her to maintain.  That's a whole nother story...

    Here's some irony...

DD was elected by peers to be a junior rep in the marching band.  Junior reps carry out several tasks to prepare for preseason (band camp).  One of her tasks was to write letters to a few people asking them to speak at convocation during Preseason.  Other reps wrote letters too.  No one accepted any of the reps' requests/invitations.  So the band director took care of getting someone to speak.  BUT, the athletic director was so impressed with DD's well written letter, he came to rehearsal one day and sought her out.  Ha ha - and she isn't even a student there anymore. As a matter of fact, Preseason is over and the first football game is this Friday and she still isn't registered to be in band.  The person she needs to meet with was sick the day DD had an appointment with her to register and I think she's been rescheduled for next week. How stupid is that?

AND the next irony is that DD is a member of the Ballroom Dance Team.  You don't need to be a student there to be a member of the team.  So over the summer, some of them got together to do a photoshoot for an advertisement that is going to be on dining hall tables in all the dining halls.  She is in 2 of the pictures.  The only one in more than 1 picture.  And again, she isn't even a student there...

    I hate my alma mater...

She is in the orangish (coral?) Latin dress on the left and in the pink dress top right...

Hey, I lost this thread and just found it, only to see that nobody's talking right now...
Meece, that is such awesome news about the new baby coming.  I am happy for you and your family.
Deb, your grandson is so adorable...any updated pix?

Chris, if you are around, please keep in touch.  Sorry about DD...has she thought about changing her major?  All that science seemed to be problematic.  Anyway, she should pursue her passions - music and dance - and I hope she does well in the new college.
I work at a community college and "teach my heart out"....many don't want it - they just ask if they can go home early and I always say "sure, the door is right there, but I am going to keep this class going until 9 PM"
Where did DS end up going?
Stop being so hard on yourself, Chris!  You have managed to be a great mom and daughter and hold down a job too...what more do you want?  These are busy years.  I had kids at home for 40 years...
from the birth of my first daughter to the graduation of my grandson who I raised.  Now, the next is empty and I am still walking and talking.
    OK enough here...nobody's home anyway!
I miss this thread and the ladies I met here.
If anybody wants to find me on FB, just PM Joan811.
I am also on a Radiation Recovery thread with some great ladies from all over the country -- most are way past radiation.  And am on the "Can we have a forum for older women?" thread with another great group but we are mostly 60+.  And I drop in at Bonfire of the Goddesses occasionally.
Sheila, if you are checking in, let me know where you hang out if anywhere...and send more baby pix and let me know where your Voice thread is if you have one.
I know you are also busy with your beautiful granddaughter.

If anyone still checks in here, please say hi.

    xoxo
    Joan

Hi all.  I check in - just don't have much to say...  same old - same old.

DD is still having trouble with Bio and I'm not sure she's doing that great in calculus...  She likes her Water and Society class - not sure how she is doing.  It's difficult in college when there aren't that many graded assignments, quizzes or exams.  She has 2 professors for Genetics - she's done with the first one - who said "I don't like you," to her face.  I hope she can do better with the second one.  I'm afraid to ask...

DS goes to Central.  He is putting more effort into it than he did in high school. So I hope he will do well, build some confidence and then be able to do as well as I think he is capable of doing.

DD played in the band at the Army game at Yankee Stadium last weekend.  She had a good time (even if it was Yankee Stadium - lol - Boston fans here)  There was a really low flying helicopter and some people parachuted into the stadium.  I guess it was pretty exciting.

    I saw her dance at a competition - she and her partner won 5 ribbons - a couple 8th places, a couple 5th and a 4th, I think.

    Hi Chris,
I am glad to hear your DD is playing in band (Yankee Stadium rocks!) and that she is dancing her heart out!  So what is her major?  I cannot believe her prof. said he didn't like her.  I couldn't imagine....almost harassment!  In my class I give a LOT of assignments so that students who do not do well on tests can at least have a shot at doing some meaningful work for credit that helps their grade.  It isn't easy but I believe in diversifying the work.  I always hated courses that only used tests and quizzes as grades.
That's a nice surprise that your son is showing a more serious commitment to college.  I hope he does well as he gains confidence.  That's another thing I do in my courses...I design assignments for students to succeed so that they gain confidence.  Most tell me "I can't do math and I can't do science" but they find out they can.  My boss calls me maternal...I resented that, but I guess in some ways I am nurturing.  Over the years though I have gotten burned by being nice...so I have backed off a bit from being too helpful.  Students care less and work less than ever.  Grades are down overall.

    Hi Sandy, Ducky, FK.

Thanks for checking in, Chris, Sheila,, and others.
I hope that the holidays are good and not too stressful this year.  And just a sprinkle of snow to be beautiful...but not inconvenient!
