Elevated Liver enzymes.
Hi Ladies. I just joined this awesome site on Friday. I have been lurking on here for over 2 years and now find myself needing answers. I had 4 tumors, stage 2. Clear nodes, double mastectomy 1/14/13 did chemo and last rads 10/10/13. I just had bloodwork last week that showed my AST at 223 and ALT 92. This is very alarming as bloodwork in July was normal. Any other ideas as to what may cause this, other than the obvious. Hoping for ultrasound on Tuesday. Dr said no alcohol or Tylenol for 2 weeks and rerun blood. Any thoughts or comforting words. I'm a reck!

It is so scary when something like this happens. A couple weeks after my mastectomy, my liver enzymes went up 5 times the normal range. It was terrifying to me, I was still in shock from my diagnosis which had happened only about a month bedore. I got off all meds and within a month they had gone back into the normal range and have been ok ever since. I think it was a combination of the anesthetic and pain meds after surgery. I'm especially sensitive to Tylenol and just refuse to take it anymore. They even thought I may have hepatitis, which I tested negative for. A few days before I have bloodwork, I stop taking all my meds and supplements, and stay really well hydrated, so maybe that might be worth a try. Of course you cant stop some of them (like blood pressure), but i dont take my lipitor or anyything else that it won't hurt me to do without for a couple days! Wishing you all the best and hoping your next blood work shows them going down! Veda

Thanks for the response, Jacksnana. I only take Tamoxifen, Vitamin D, Calcium, Multivitamin and Fish Oil / 3 Omega. Along with no alcohol and Tylenol, I've decided to stop the Fish Oil over the next two weeks until my next blood work date. I'm not sure if Fish Oil can elevate liver enzymes but don't want to take any chances. I have an ultrasound for Thursday morning. How does one breathe until then? I felt like I was just finally seeing the light. Was reading that it could also be the gallbladder, just have to wait and see, just like all you ladies have done over the years! Such strength we all have, its amazing!

It seems highly unlikely that something related to bc would be going on so soon after your chemo & rads. Did your onc do a CA27-29 with your other blood work? While not always 100% accurate (more for some than others). If there was no increase in your CA27-29, that might be one more bit of reassurance until you get things figured out. Deanna

No CA27-29 test. First test is RUQ (Right Upper Quadrant) ultrasound, which I did this morning. This covers the liver, spleen, gallbladder and kidneys on left side, that's what the tech told me. I go to Oncologist's office end of next week for blood work to see if levels have dropped, I will mention the CA27-29 test. Boy! the things that go through your head in a day, are crazy! Hopefully, I know something tomorrow on the US. Janice
