I was diagnosed with IDC 5 days ago...partial masectomy  with sentinel lymph node biopsy at the same time in 2 weeks...about 1/4 of my breast will be removed (from about 3-6 oclock...) I'm trying hard to be strong and positive for everyone around me...i normally wear underwires and D cup...I'm wondering what is recommended works best feels best after this surgery? Should there be compression? Does it feel better to sleep in a sports bra? Will i be able to pull one over my head? I already have shoulder and neck issues with tendonitis and arthritis..

Christiney, all the best to you with your surgery. Has your surgeon given you post op instructions yet? Normally, they will recommend what type of compression they want you to have. I wore a front closure sports bra for the first few weeks, 24\7. I did not have drains fortunately, so I was able to shower very soon after surgery.

The issue I had was every single garment (especially the bras) I owned had a seam that irritated my sentinel node incision.  I finally turned a T shirt inside out and wore my bra and all over that.

I had purchased a few front closing sports bras before my surgeries but in the end I never wore them, or any bra whatsoever. I was really surprised because everyone I knew who'd already been through it had strongly recommended them for comfort and compression. But after the surgery I just couldn't bear the thought of having anything touching me that tightly. I had (very luckily) purchased two zip up the front, nursing staff-type shirts from a 2nd hand shop and I wore them constantly. I wish I'd bought ten. I also couldn't bear the thought of a t-shirt or anything that wasn't loose or anything I had to move my arm too much to get into. I don't even think it was a pain thing - I just had a strong aversion to anything touching me tightly for about two weeks each time.

By the way, I'm not a person who should be going braless in public EVER, but I just did not care a fig for those few weeks! Also, those cotton uniform shirts I bought were heavy enough material and loose enough that I don't think it looked too awful (or so I tell myself now :)

I just had a lumpectomy last Monday and am loving the genie bras that I got from walmart. They offer just enough support but extremely soft. I got button up pj's and zipper hogoodies to wear and that has worked perfectly for me.

My surgeon told me, before the lumpectomy, that I was to wear a sports bra, preferably cotton and with no seams in the cup area, 24/7, until any post-surgical swelling went down (his call). Since I had no drain, I could use back closing ones and over-the-head styles--both plentiful and cheap at K-Mart. And they worked well enough that I could use them when going out.
