Does BC cause pain? A little survey.
Hi Everyone, im trying to get some opinions from people who have or had BC and also from people who dont have BC but have other benign conditions.
My question is:
Did / Do you have breast pain?
If so, could you describe the sort of pain/discomfort it is?
The reason i ask is i have severe breast pain and although not diagnosed yet (and fingers crossed all is ok) i have been told on many occasions BC does not cause pain. So i wanted to see if you all agree?

Hi Sinfullyd,I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you. My small breast tumor did not cause me any pain. But what did hurt was the large cyst I had at the time. And when I had it checked out, the scan found my small tumor. So finding my cancer was kind of incidental to cyst pain.

Thank you bren. I'm hoping that the pain is just due to a cyst. I had an ultrasound last year and it didn't show anything so they said the lump is just a cyst from what they could feel. So I'm hoping the cyst has just grown and that's what the pain is.

yes, I had sharp pain and burning. I have IBC.
-
I also have pain in my armpit. Its more of an ache actually. Same side as breast lump. Only 2 more days to wait for the US. Getting myself into a bit of a mess to be honest. The worry is unbearable.
What i will say is that the pain in my breast does not seem to emanate from the lump. Its more of an all over breast pain. That is until im driving and the seatbelt sits across my breast. Then it hurts on the lump itself.

My cancer did not cause any pain at all. But, then, I was stage I with negative nodes, so...? It was a complete surprise, even to my radiologist.
-
I think it varies from case to case.. I've had benign nodules with no pain in the past. My son gave me a bear hug one night and I felt a sharp pain on my right side. (had a gyn visit just 6 weeks earlier, no lumps) I went into my bathroom to examine myself and found a nodule the size of a lima bean which turned out to be cancerous.
While it's nice to hear what others have been through or how they found theirs, your best source is your doctor.
Best wishes to you

I had no discomfort. No lump. No clue it was there. Thank goodness for early detection and 3D Mammos.
-
No pain, no palpable lump, and yet it was 1.5+ cm and had spread to a node.
Years ago doctors used to pooh pooh women who came to them concerned about painful lumps. A good friend's mother died of BC because her doctor refused to refer her, saying that breast cancer didn't cause pain therefore there was nothing to worry about.
Fortunately, these days we have other ways of getting screening and referrals, thank goodness.
I hope you've gotten some answer by now, Sinfullyd.

No pain for me, just a lump. It didn't hurt when I found it and poked at it. But now, after treatment (lumpectomy, chemo and radiation) yowza does my breast ache. My breast surgeon told me that would be normal and that it could happen on and off for my life.

Hi Sinfullyd,
On September 14, 2014 I felt a pinch (not really painful but as if the underwire of my bra was pinching under my left breast),i started to adjust that and immediately felt the lump and then i felt my blood run cold like ice water.
so my advice to all women (and men) is not to panic but whether you feel an unusual pain or not, do get it checked out even if it does go away. Do your self-exams often and do them thoroughly, get your mammograms done but stay calm if you do find something, don't freak your family out for nothing. But again, get it checked out. You won't regret it, whatever the dx is
Good luck to you and wishing you all the best

I had pain and thickness and a lump that didn't change when seen through an US. The doc dismissed me in secs and claimed pain was not associated with bc. I asked for a biopsy and t.hey found it. Docs seems to be biased when u mention pain especially if r young. Get an MRI and get a biop it may be nothing mg but better safe then sorry. My experience.
I also had pain ing the beginning when I jumped around and when my son hugged me. Then it started to spread to side of boob where lymph nodes were.

I have dull aching pain from the area of the tumor accompanied by period radiating pain across the entire breast, also, I've had severe itching primarily around the nipple for more than 7years. I avoided going in for dx because I read that breast cancer doesn't cause pain.... that's baloney! I finally went in when the mass seemed to be growing and I noticed extreme lethargy and loss of stamina. I biked 20miles each morning with ease early last summer and by fall 8 miles was a great accomplishment. I eat all organic, and according to my dr am one of the healthiest patients she has seen -except that I have cancer. -
Breast cancer not cause pain! Baloney. It can. My first bc diagnosis involved a tumor that had nerve endings in it, and believe me I had nerve pain shooting down through my arm. My second bc diagnosis which was inflammatory, now that didn't hurt at all. Go figure.
-
my tumor was close to the surface near the skin. It started with itching, progressed to a feeling like milk letting down too nurse and the last month was just pain localized in that part of the breast.
-
My mother had breast pain for years before she was finally diagnosed. She said she was told over and over that breast cancer didn't cause pain. Her pain was so bad that she would be scared anytime someone would get too close or start to give her a hug. She finally did get a biopsy on a lump they found, but they biopsied the wrong lump and she wasn't diagnosed until 2 years later!
-
The pain is what alerted me to the lump - like a bee sting.

I had a bmx 5 months ago and I had rib and sternum pain the entire time. I had exchange surgery on Jan 14th and still have a lot of pain in my sternum on the left breast side ( side that had cancer), ps said after exchange that part of the te was le=odged in my right ribs, that pain is gone but why do I still have it in the sternum ?? Also, I cant stand anything touching where my lymph node scar or where my scars are from the 4 drains. I hesitate to say it's painful...but really fing uncomfortable ! So..to answer the question at hand..I cant answer

I had some pain, it felt like work out pain. It persisted along with my mass and lump. I could feel the hard lump and a bigger area that now I am guessing was the DCIS (but I might be mistaken - not sure if DCIS is palpable).
-
I definitely felt pain in my DCIS breast and it was exactly where they found it.
-
I had an intermittent throbbing pain for 1.5 years or so before dx.
-
I can't remember if there was any pain. I do remember the skin over the lump itching often. Figured it was just another cyst...only the cysts never itched...
Also the cysts had smooth surfaces like marbles while this cancer lump had a surface like a golf ball.
-
I had pain that radiated from my breast and down my arm and side. It was what reminded me that I was a couple months late for my annual mammo. I was told the the cancer was probably wrapped around a nerve. The pain was gone after surgery.
-
My lump caused pain. It felt like a hard rock. It was on the left side, which was the side I had always slept on. The woman who did my mammo told me it probably wasn't BC because BC usually doesn't cause pain. I hope someday these wives tales will be done away with!
-
I have no lump. Just a strange pain sensation that ebbs and flows... right where the cancer was found. I ignored it because I too believed the many writings that said cancer didn't cause pain. Not true
-
Yes mine was like a deep pain from nipple to chestwall . Bee sting like at times and also like ovulation pain as weird as it sounds and it itched at times. So ya it does hurt reguardless what they say .
-
I didn't feel any pain in the area of my tumor until chemotherapy. I felt occasional stinging or burning during chemo.
-
Yes, I had sharp pains for a long time in the right breast, very painful, though did not last long. As time went on, the pains got more frequent and hurt more too. Also got pain in right underarm, where pet scan showed positive nodes along with lobular and ductal tumors in the right breast. The sharp pains felt, like burning, stinging or being jabbed with a sharp object, not fun!!
-
No pain. Just a small palpable lump.
-
Hi-
I had no pain or no lump associated with my DCIS. It was found through my yearly mammogram and confirmed with a stereotactic biopsy. I had no clue. Even though the malignant area was 3cm.
