Good morning -- our first really 'cold' day is here.  mid-40's all day and really low ( like frosty ) tonight.  Most of our leaves are done thank goodness but I'll be working on the last of them later on.  Then, after the frost tonight -- probably most of the last few will be ready to leave the tree.  We won't bother with them.  They will be dealt with in Spring as always.

Not looking forward to the cold which it seems we are jumping into really quick.  I think we are still in the process of 'who knows' with the global warming just what we are going to have and when it will start.  The past couple of years were totally different from the actual prediction.  Just wondering if they get it right this time  -- and it mainly sounds like the same one from the past three or so years that has been wrong.  An early, and especially cold winter.  If they keep saying it -- eventually it just might happen.  Something I  definitely would not like.  Sigh !!!  Just wait and see as always.

Time to start the morning chores.

    Blessings

    Jackie

Here they say our winter will be warmer and rainier. So far they're right about the rain.

    congrats Puffin- what a milestone!

I just got home from volunteering for the day at the school I used to work for. It was fun to see everyone, and get back into things again, if only for a day. I am tired though, and still have trick or treating tonight.

Yay, Puffin!  You look happy in the photo.

It was in the 50's here this morning.  Sunday morning is forecast to be in the high 30's.  That's definitely winter for us.

Tonight I'm sitting here in tee shirt and shorts with bare feet.  It was a totally gorgeous day with high in the low 70's.  My mother and I went to lunch at New Orleans Hamburger and Seafood and shared a seafood platter with thin fried catfish fillets, shrimp, oysters and crab cake.  Garlic potatoes, buttered French bread, cole slaw and hush puppies.  Dessert was a soft-serve ice cream in a tiny waffle cone.  We both ate all we could hold and brought home the leftovers.

I'm preparing dinner for dh tonight but am not hungry!

Prayers answered. Puffin, so glad you are finished.

Teka, you find the cutest things to post.

My daughter, Allison, who lives in Chicago, posted a video taken from her apartment window showing snow. Later she said it has turned to sleet. That's just not fair. I counted how long it's been since the last snow...only 5 months! At least she doesn't have North Dakota 16 degree weather. (No, I don't think anyone can beat that number!) You have to look for the silver lining I guess.

I saw a tree in my neighborhood that was just starting to get some color on the tips of the leaves. The weatherman says it will go all the way down to 49 tomorrow night. (Stop laughing!) Next week it will be a lovely mid-70's week so we can now say Fall has officially arrived in South Texas.

The mention of cabbage has my mouth watering. Anybody have any recipes to share? I've made some sautéed cabbage once (labor intensive recipe) and have also put it in soup, but that's all I know how to make.

    Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls

1 1/2 to 2 lbs lean ground beef

    1 tbsp oil

    1 large onion, chopped

    1 clove garlic, minced

    1 small cabbage, chopped

2 cans (14.5 ozs each) diced tomatoes

1 can (8 ozs) tomato sauce

    1/2 cup water

    1 tsp ground black pepper

    1 tsp sea salt

In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat.

Add the ground beef and chopped onion then cook, stirring, until ground beef is no longer pink and chopped onion is tender.

Add the minced garlic and continue cooking for 1 minute.

Add the chopped cabbage, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, water, black pepper, and sea salt.

    Bring to a boil.

Cover and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes, or until chopped cabbage is tender.

    Serves 6 to 8

    Lovely flavor!!

    Teka, yes, cute cartoon!

Got the call from Interventional Radiology today telling me to report at 10 AM Monday for my 10 hour day to have my embolization of my kidney mass of blood vessels and fat. Once that is done maybe I can stay clear of doctors offices except for follow-up appointments.

Puff -- hoping that Monday gets you all "repaired" and you can settle back and just enjoy life for a bit -- no Docs, no cutting, no stitching -- just getting used to 'normalcy'.

Teka, that un-stuffed cabbage sounds really good.  Also sounds like the flavors would come together more than they do in Glompkies -- I'm sure I'm spelling that wrong, but it is stuffed cabbage which I was only luke-warm about because the sauce always sort of drained away as you ate it.  Now your recipe I would love to try.  Wonder why I never thought of making it anyhow --- I make un-stuffed green peppers.  Sigh !!!

I'm not in a hurry for the cold weather ( 30 degrees outside this a.m. ) but not because I can't do ok.  I just don't like some of it as I worry it will prevent me from getting out and getting my feral cats fed.  I really only have two at the farthest point I go.  The one I know is fairly old -- has the thin, no longer robust appearance.  Still just as loving ( to me ) as he has been for a long, long time, but I worry about him and the winter weather  He is adamant about being shut in anywhere -- so bringing him home is not really an option.  The one who has become a litter-mate is a black long haired three-legged cat.  One of the back legs is missing.  He?/She too is not too robust but does seem not the worst for wear.  If something happens to the orange and white -- I think I would just bring that one home with me.  Then I could stop going out so far and only deal with the two mile trek into town -- that feeding area is right as you enter town.

Wren, now you have me worried.  Dh and I have noticed -- it sure seems the nicer it is in and around the West Coast area -- the worse it is for us.  If your predicted for a "good" winter, then we could be really in for it.  Well, it will be what it is and we will deal with it and go on -- as we always do.   Still so fond of the saying " It's amazing what you can do when you have no choice".  I'll just be hoping for not much ice.  That poses some touchy issues.  Especially for anyone who loves the vertical position out of doors.

    See you all later.

    Blessings

    Jackie

It was very cool here today, 50's and 60's.  Tonight we could have a freeze.

For cabbage recipes, just google "cabbage," and you'll come up with a big variety.  I like stuffed cabbage but haven't made it in a long time.  It's a bit of trouble to blanch the cabbage leaves to make them supple.  I usually make my stuffing with some kind of ground meat and cooked rice and seasonings.  Tomato soup makes a good sauce over the the little bundles.

No cooking for me tonight!  We're going out to dinner with neighbors.  Whoopee!  No cleanup.

Brrr, it is pretty nippy here.  Thin layer of ice on the water bucket outside in the dog pen.  We have their heater on inside the house and we have a bucket that has a heat coil -- enough to keep their water from freezing, but we know we are not quite to the REALLY frozen water stage yet.

Good ole' daylight savings ( turn the clock back this time ) happened during the night.  We don't change our clocks the night before -- just do them all in the morning and it works fine for us.  Got to stay in bed an extra hour ( or so it felt by watching the clock with the wrong time ) this morning.  I could have gotten up as the coffee was ready.  We set it on a timer so that we can have coffee as quick as we are ready for it.   I think this is the ONE time that I can actually say I got to sleep in.  I always think I will but seldom ever do.

Carole, you know sometimes I could just grab myself and give myself a good shake.  I actually had forgotten that I could take anything I might like -- like cabbage, and google it.  Sometimes I amaze myself by some of the things I've taught myself to do -- and other times, well my head is hanging  to my knees almost in dejection and embarrassment for what totally slips through my head and most obviously keeps right on going.  Talk about a "duh" moment, but I'm so glad you said what you did -- because if I make a banner for my computer room -- something gentle of course,  like   LOOK IT UP STUPID maybe I'll remember the easy answers instead of thinking everything is somehow complicated.

I have so many friends here and money sure can't buy that.

I'm hoping you are all going to have a bright, sunny day -- even if nippy, and that you can enjoy your day.  It's a gorgeous Fall day here.

    Talk to you all later.

    Blessings,

    Jackie
