Confused why I can't have a double mastectomy.

my original surgery was going to be single MX with expanders followed by implant then rads. I decided last week that I want to do bmx with expanders and get it all done at once. Surgeon was ok with that... But today got a call from her and radiologist BS and PS decided that in order to radiate my bad side better they don't want to do bmx. The good expander will get in the way. I should've asked more questions but my toddler was screaming that umizoomi wasn't on. So...
Anyway. Seems like everyone has bmx and rads. Why can't i??

I had BMX with expanders during my rads. My rads side was expanded fuller for two reasons. One - to make it easier to radiate. Two - to allow for the shrinkage that rads causes. It can be done. Do you have time for a second opinion? If a BMX is really what you want, it seems ridiculous to make you go through two surgeries, and twice the recovery, twice the mental healing, etc..

no my sx is scheduled for tues. Looks like you did the whole thing at once. Wish I could do that!!!
But I just talked to my surgeon again she said they normal do the second during recon. I still don't get why.

yes, I did mine all at once. Had three surgeons working on me at the same time - BS, PS, and OB/GYN surgeon. Scheduling nightmare, but worth it to me to have it all done at once. So sorry this isn't an option for you.

I second getting a second opinion. Although I opted out of radiation, it was an option after my BMX and reconstruction via tissue expanders.

Hi Jovigal,I had a BMX with expanders back in June 2014. Followed by chemo in July. I will not have rads because there is nothing to radiate. If you want a BMX, it is your right. I would agree with the previous posters and get another opinion. You have time to cancel and have your questions answered.
Good luck to you!

I was in the same boat had lumpectomy then turned around and had a mastectomy on the 28th of October. I asked the doctor to take my left side as well however they said they couldn't wait for me to start chemo. She said typically if you take a good side it tends to be the one that gets infections and takes longer to heal and they said honestly I needed to start on chemo as soon as possible. So I will have it done eventually during Reconstruction. Which will be one year after I finish rads. Start chemo on the 20th
