Mastectomy and Sentinol Node Removal a few days ago
Looking for some info from those that have had mastectomy... had mastectomy on left breast..stayed in hospital for two nights. Have two drains and some swelling under the left arm area and towards the back. Is this normal? Feel a little swollen in the front area as well...but can see the swelling under the arm area and towards back..feels weird. No pain. Also started with a little water retention in my feet this morning. Stopped taking the pain meds a day ago since there was really no pain. Didn't take the valium either. Has anyone experienced these kinds of symptoms and also when did you change your dressings..I am a little afraid to. Taking my temp all the time and its normal...empty drains twice a day and they seem to be getting less each day but not by a whole lot... anyone can share their experiences afterwards would be greatly appreciated...so I don't worry. Doctor said swelling is normal. Go to the doctor on Thursday for first followup. My original diagnosis was dcis and was just going to do lumpectomy, radiation and pill for 10 years. MRI picked up 2mm lesion and 3mm lesion in different areas which is why we chose total mastectomy of left breast... with sentinol node biopsy. According to what doctor saw on mri, she believed it would be just mastectomy and pill for 10 years, but you never know what pathology will find.. how long after do I find out and would they have known anything during the surgery??? As you can see just a little nervous...but still thinking positive.. Any info from anyones experiiences would be greatly appreciated..... Thank you.

Hello ThinkingPositive, Everything you've reported here sounds very normal to me. I had the swelling too and I also had a Seroma, which was drained once, but it filled again and my Surgeon decided to let it resolve itself.
It is a nerve wracking time after the surgery, waiting for the final pathology. It is very unlikely that they could tell anything during the surgery, it needs to be a Pathology report done on the tissue, to be sure of anything. My final Pathology took a long time to come back because my surgery was right before Christmas and the labs were closed over the Christmas break.
Try not to be worrying too much about the final Pathology, just try to relax and be kind to yourself, while you heal from this surgery. I know how easy it is to overdo it, when you think you're feeling ok, but your body will let you know that it is time to slow down again. I found, I could almost drop off to sleep mid sentence in the beginning!
I wish you all the very best! Write down any questions you have for your appointment, I always found if I didn't write it down, I'd be kicking myself on the way home, because I forgot to ask something. Take care and let us know how you get on.

your symptoms sound very similar to what I felt after my mastectomy. I also was exhausted from the anesthesia and that took me a month to fully recover from. Try to take it day by day, then appointment to appointment. If you can, it is very helpful to have someone with you at every appointment because you both hear things differently. Also ask for a written copy of your pathology report. There is a whole new language to learn and it is too much to absorb all at one time. I eventually wrote for a complete copy of my medical record and that was helpful. You can do this! Just try not to get ahead of yourself - take it one step at a time.

Thank you for the info... starting to feel a little bit of tightness and pain in my chest..not a whole lot..and the swelling under the arm towards my back is feeling like a small tennis ball... drains still red... all normal?? I guess I don't find anything out until my appt with my breast surgeon which is Nov 7th. If necessary will they take care of coordinating with a medical oncologist? At this point I have not seen one yet. Can anyone explain about the lymph node removal - sentinel lymph node dissection? I thought that they would be able to tell during surgery if more nodes were needed to be removed and that they checked the nodes during surgery..? I have my follow up with the plastic surgeon tomorrow....have not changed my dressings or even looked at them..should I ?? They gave me gauze in the hospital so I assume that I should but I am afraid and would it be bad if I didn't and just waited until tomorrow? I also assume if I start having pain again I can take the pain meds that I was prescribed...is it normal for the pain to come and go? Starting to become more nervous than I was when I came home from the hospital 4 days ago...

Hi ThinkingPositive!
I received my IDC dx after my mx at my first follow-up visit with my breast surgeon. They really don't know everything and therefore cannot propose the right treatment plan until the pathology report is complete. Your symptoms are normal. Your pain will come and go and change in intensity, but you will find that it is very tolerable. Tylenol worked wonders for me to take the edge off the pain that I was feeling. I had two drains which came out a week to the day after my mx. with no problems. They were just more inconvenient than anything. Your anxiety will come and go too. All very normal. You don't have to suffer through any intense pain or anxiety; that's what the meds are for. Don't be afraid to take them if it helps you get throught this difficult time. We are all here for you and will support you and answer your questions. WE can truly understand and totally relate to what you are going through.

Thinkingpositive,
You mentioned your drains are red. My recollection from my mastectomy, which was in June, was that if you are getting a lot of bright red blood in your drains, then that could be a sign of infection. If you have a little bit of bright red blood, that is OK; I know I had some. But, if you have a lot, it may warrant a call to your doctor to ask them their opinion. Don't be shy about calling the doctor; we called at least 2x while I had my drains in regarding changes we noticed. Both times they said it was fine and not to worry.
I don't blame you for being nervous about changing the dressings. I would have been also, but fortunately, my husband did it for me the first few days to week. After that, I got used to it and did it myself. I changed the dressings just once a day and emptied my drains 3x a day initially.
Hope all goes well.

I did call the doctor about the amount that was in the drain from the night before to the morning.. it had gone way up...from like 10 to 70 and was red. He told me it could have been just a pocket of blood and to call if the bulb seems to fill quickly again. Right now It is filling very slow.. the color in the tube is not red but once it gets into the bulb it looks red to me. He said to call back if it accumulates to that level again quickly. I have my followup with him tomorrow at 11 am. So far no real pain or fever. I have been taking the antibiotic 3 times a day and I don't feel any heat from around the incision areas... or where the drains are...although I have not see them. Just major discomfort with the swelling around the back of the armpit and under the armpit. The mastectomy site where the expander was placed feels swollen as well... and discomfort...Is that to be expected??

ThinkingPositive - your surgery was so recent... everything you have mentioned sounds pretty normal to me.
Immediately after my BMX, I looked so swollen EVERYWHERE I looked like a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon.
Everything was swollen, tight, and uncomfortable.
HOWEVER - You are doing all the right things by monitoring your temperature and taking your antibiotics. Now is the worst time for infection to set it, and if you have any questions about that, be sure to call your Breast Surgeon. Don't be shy... they get calls like that all the time. Better to be safe than sorry.
Many of us found that the more we moved around, the longer it took for the fluid in the drains to go from red to that pinkish/straw color. The docs want you to be up and around to prevent blood clots, but not so active that your tissues are putting out more fluid.
I never touched my dressings. Only the docs did at the Post-Op appointment.
Re the Sentinel Node Biopsy and Final Path report... The way my surgery was done, the SNB tissue was sent down to Pathology while I was on the table. The Pathologist took a slice of each node, and reported back to the surgeon that all was clear. Had the Pathologist seen any cancer in the Sentinel Nodes, he would have reported that back to the Breast Surgeon, and she would have removed more nodes during my BMX.
However, that was just a small slice that was examined during surgery. The following day, every single bit of lymph node and breast tissue was examined extensively. Those were the tests that took a while to run, type up into a Final Pathology report, and sent back to the Breast Surgeon. I had my results within a few days.... I think.... and certainly before my one-week Post Op appointment.
Did you see your Plastic Surgeon today? What did he/she say?
Wishing you good healing!!!

Thanks..have an appt with plastic surgeon today and appt with breast surgeon on the 7th of November. I guess I get my results at the breast surgeon appt. Leaving now for plastic surgeon appt...hoping everything is normal...starting to wish I did no reconstruction.
