What if we changed the focus of Breast Cancer Awareness month?

Options

Many - but not all - of us object to the emphasis on "awareness" this month, because we feel that EVERYONE is aware by now and that the focus should be on issues like research, prevention and cure.

I am wondering if those of us who fall into that camp would feel more engaged in Pinktober if it were renamed to something like Breast Cancer Research, Prevention and Cure month?

Why does it have to be a whole month?  Have to question why prevention - if it could be prevented wouldn't there be a huge deficit in new cases?  As for awareness, surely everyone is aware by now - what about funding RESEARCH for new drugs with fewer se's and a CURE!

IMO we need to be heard by the gov't, EPA, pesticide and chemical companies that we know of the toxins they are exposing us too.

"The Environmental Protection Agency gave Dow Chemical Co. the green light to use a
toxic combination of the herbicide 2,4-D and glyphosate, the active ingredient
in Monsanto’s Roundup, on millions of acres of genetically engineered crops
    across the United States."

"This is a huge step backward that could have perilous consequences for public
health: 2,4-D has been linked to an increased risk of Parkinson’s disease,
non-Hodgkin lymphoma, suppressed immune function and other serious health
    problems."  (Hello cancer)

    hi ladies,

I know it's not October and I'm a few months late to join in...but in reading some different threads this morning, I came upon this one. After some thought, I totally agree with you....I was diagnosed, had biopsy, surgery and got results all in October 2010... I couldn't deal with anything pink for awhile...I remember telling my husband that when you are a new bC patient, it seems like reminders were everywhere...and it was hard to deal with.

For what it's worth, I also feel we need to focus on the research and coping side of bC...maybe public awareness of the importance of research, like someone here said. So far as I know, there is no preventing it, since no one yet knows the exact cause (my MO says DNA changes,,but what causes that?) I tell folks we need to contribute towards funding for treatment for those with inadequate or no insurance, or helping someone who has it, or donating towards research that could develop better medications.

I don't know anyone who isn't "aware" of breast cancer...but there are many who could benefit from help and all of us from research.

    Just my two cents...Ellen
