Second surgery without clean margins

I'm going into surgery for a second time to achieve clean margins after a lumpectomy with a 6 cm ILC tumor.  Tumor was originally seen on the mammogram as 1.6 cm tumor but after surgery it was determined to be larger.  It's on my upper chest so not really on my breast but as I was told your breast tissue goes up to your collar bone.  Has anyone had a second operation for a lumpectomy to obtain clear margins?  Was it successful?

I had a bi-lateral mastectomy, but had a good friend who had a lumpectomy that did not get clean margins.  Her mass was also fairly high on her chest.  The second surgery definitely did achieve clean margins, she went on to Canadian protocol rads afterward and has had no further problems.  The need for re-excision happens in about 20% of lumpectomies.  Good luck!

I had clean but close margins on my first lumpectomy, so I had to have a reexcision (which was successful).  My breast surgeon said the reexcision was nothing to be alarmed about. Are you going in for another lumpectomy or a mastectomy?
