-jmb5- Vinnie in April? I am going in April (the third) , as well, not having Vinnie do the tats but one of his coworkers who is supposed to be as great. I am so excited about it and my PS is too.
-
Did anyone have a Muga scan shortly after stage 1? Getting herceptin next week and MO has ordered a Muga scan for Friday, but it seems so soon after surgery ( 2 1/2 weeks). Going to call PS tomorrow to make sure its ok, just wondering if anyone else has been through this.
-
I am so behind!!!!!
Lovecat, you sound pretty good. I can't wait to hear how you lymph node transfer works out. I met a woman at my group therapy meeting who went to PRMA to have her nodes moved from her groin to her axilla. She is wearing a precautionary sleeve and say she feels great. Do they have you wearing a compression sleeve too?
Welcome, Wintersocks.
Janet, how are you doing. Don't keep us in suspense!
I was told no Neosoporin too. Something about a lot of people react badly to it.
Tan, my tummy incision slowly opened up. I went in for a debriding after a couple of weeks (didn't hurt at all) and that sped up the healing process after that. I ended up having to do wet to dry packing, but it's not as bad as you would think. I hope it doesn't come to that for you, but if it does, don't panic. I went about my business pretty well. If you need a good protein drink and there is a Costco near you, try to get your hands on Premium Protein Shakes. 30 grams of Protein, no soy, and tastes pretty good. I have one daily, sometimes two. They are low in carbs and calories.
Teacher, glad your friend made it through surgery okay. I hope her stay in ICU is comfortable as possible.
I am seeing a pain management doc next week. After all the surgery and hopes of iron bra going away. No such luck. Now I start a new adventure..ugh. And, I still have stage 2b to go. Three reasons for iron bra. Radiation, which causes tight scar tissue, Capsular Contracture, and nerve damage. Sometimes the pecs can't take the stretching from the implants, but that obviously wasn't my issue either. So, now we look at nerve damage, which I kind of suspected from the beginning, but was trying really hard to be positive and optimistic that this all would work. The are varying degrees of iron bra. Before my diep it was tolerable. Now, not so much. I don't know where to turn anymore. Post mastectomy pain syndrome is only becoming something that BS's and PS's acknowledge very recently, and God forbid you've got an old school doc. I am hoping the pain management clinic is of the new school of thinking. So, wish me luck. Maybe the pain guy has an answer.

Goldie - I'm doing great thanks! My procedure was yesterday, and I was awake the whole time. After 90 minutes (with my very lovely plastic surgeon) I had two new nipples, and left two old dog ears behind.
I'd anticipated a few days of recovery, but apart from some minor pain on my sides, I feel great. The worst part was the freezing of my dog ears, and one of my breasts. After that, I was told that I may feel some pressure, or tugging, but no pain. That was true. Still, it was weird to be cut and sewn while being present. I stared at the ceiling the whole time (or at my surgeon), except once when I made the mistake of looking down and seeing a nipple that looked like a cocktail sausage, being sewed onto my breast.
It's been over a year since my DIEP and I was used to my Malibu Barbie breasts - or so I thought. But today in the shower, I looked down at my sausage nipples and was SO happy to see something there. Also, with my procedure, the nipples always start large and shrink down over the first month or two.
I hope everyone out there is healing and recovering. It is such a long process and requires so much patience, exploration, and commitment. It's been three years since my diagnosis and such a long crazy rodeo - but - if I had to start over, I would make the very same decisions.
-
vikster, no way!!!! My appointment is April 3rd also!! At 11:30 with Trent. What time will you be there? That is too funny!
I would have liked to go with Vinnie but they said he is traveling most of March and into April. I think he goes to NOLA and maybe other places? They said he trained Trent and he does an awesome job too.
-
Janet, I can't believe you were awake, but that has to be so much better than recovering from anesthesia. They didn't give you anything to relax? A little valium, Ativan, etc.? I didn't use nipple shields, or protect them from being squished, and they are still very very perky. Even my PS noticed that they haven't gone down much. He said it will be a first, but he might have to make them smaller...lol. I am now looking into those silicone nipple shields to hide them. Do you think having the dog ears removed helped the Sponge Bob look? I want a picture on New Year's. Start shopping for that sexy black dress.
-
Sausage nipples! Lol, Janet! I remember looking at mine thinking, "Man, that should hurt!" but I had no feeling at all.
So I called my BS today to see if I could get my checkup in before the year and my deductible is over. Apparently I was supposed to have a check up back in May. (She said it wasn't a big deal since I was seeing the PS a lot.) The nurse said I need a mammogram since there is tissue to image and they will just do one image of each breast. I am not thrilled about that at all. Anyone else have a mammogram since DIEP?
-
Tan, just saw your posts re incision opening. Apparently it is a common occurrence, particularly with the abdomen, over the pubic bone. I am 7 weeks post surgery and am still healing after my tummy incision started to separate a little. I say a little, but when my ps checked it a few weeks back, he said, rather nonchalantly, that he could put his finger directly in the hole in my tummy.....eeeewwww, tmi doc!! Anyway, that was then. Everything seems to have turned a corner now, and the incision is closing. Finally! I would have thought myself a fast healer prior to this also. This however is slow, but we will get there! I had no infection issues either which is comforting in the grand scheme of things, and the healing from the inside out is something I have heard over and over. Onward and up then👍 Continued good health and healing to all of you.
-
Goldie - Still perky? Ha - Don't you love it when one of your doctors tells you 'that's a first'?! And why is it only the 'first' when it doesn't go according to plan, and why aren't there more firsts when things go better than planned?
Being awake wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. I did take an Ativin an hour prior to the procedure, and I popped an other half just before. I've never taken that much at once - but I've never had awake surgery before. But really - it was good. Just a lot of unchartered territory for someone as chickensh*t as me. As usual, the anticipation in my head was much more freaky than the procedure. Once underway, I was almost relaxed, and there was a lot of happy chatting and the time flew by.
-
Janet, there is not wnough Ativan in the world that would have helped me if I had to be awake. You are strong!!
-
Good Morning everyone...
This whole stomach incision opening really sounds nasty, also painful !!!!I Do you stay numb there for awhile? I can't imagine having a hole opening up in my belly. How the heck does it heal correctly. I would think you would have a really thick scar to deal with.
Damn, this whole think is like a crap shoot.
-
Annie - I had an area of my ab incision open - there was a stitch that would not dissolve, and once it was removed, a little hole opened up, it healed from the inside out. Pretty cool to watch. It is bit indented now, but nothing I would do anything about. Oh - and it did not hurt at all.
-
I have to agree with annieb4 - damn, this whole thing is a crap shoot! I am scheduled for DIEP/SGAP in NOLA on Nov 11 and boy am I getting anxious! My last big surgery was the double mx on Jan 31 so it's been a long while since I've seen drains and wounds and $#!t like that. . .I will need support big time!
I am hoping to chart my recon adventure on the photo forum, but I haven't made the time to post yet. It was really enlightening to see the other recon stories with pics, even the nasty necrosis ones. . .it makes it real and not just something I talk about doing. Also makes it scary.
Congrats Janet, on your new sausages! I am thinking I will want them too. You are soooo right: this road requires great patience, exploration and commitment. Glad to see you've hit yet another milestone.
-
Janet that comment made me laugh. I'm sitting in the ps office waiting for doc to come in and tell me what's up for stage 2. Of course have been here for an hour already. Hoping to be able to get lifted and loaded
-
JMB, the consensus has been no mammogram after diep, just MRI or sonogram. I bet if you ask your PS he will back that up. It has come up here fairly often, and it always comes down to NO mammogram after diep, unless you have one natural breast left, of course.
Janet, so glad you were comfortable!!
Tummy wounds opening are probably the most common complication after diep, it seems. Not that it happens a lot, but if you have a complication that seems to be in the top one. Like somebody else said, as scary as it seems, and it scared the pee out of me, it was doable and not painful. My PS is going to revise my scar since it is really ugly and if I wear a swimsuit it will be noticable.
-
My friend and new DIEP sister is doing great but another fellow DIEPer (4 months out)has been hospitalized with an infection. I'm grateful to be healthy.
-
Thanks, goldie. I don't think I could afford to have MRI's or other imaging each year with my high deductible. A yearly mammogram used to be covered. I wonder if it still is after a mastectomy. Insurance companies are so dumb, it wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't. I do remember my BS, who is an excellent surgeon, telling me back before my surgery that she likes to do a yearly mammogram and just do one picture of each breast. I just feel uneasy about it, but then if doctors feel imaging is necessary, I don't want to do nothing in the years to come. Ugh! -
Hello Everyone,
So I met with my PS today and our preliminary date for DIEP if the BS is available is December 5. We discussed a lot. I don't think I could take any more info. It feels like a long way away, but I am kind of happy with it because I can have my kids birthday parties (both are in November), and decorate for Christmas. Is it strange that today is the first day that I have not cried since my DX? Am I heading for a breakdown or could this be a breakthrough? I know I will get more anxious as the day gets closer. That's what Ativan is for, right???
How is everyone else doing?

jmb--My appointment is at 1, but I am not sure if it is with Trent or Paul. Maybe we will run into each other there. What a coincidence!
My PS would love to either have Vinnie come to Omaha once a month or so to do his magic or find one of our local tattoo artists who would like to learn from Vinnie so that we would have a resident. Thirteen years ago the first time I got tats done (after the first set of implants) by my original PS; they faded to nothing shortly and never looked good to start with. This year, I got the flap surgery I wanted originally and want the best "final touches" possible too.
-
jmb....they might pay for it if you can't have an MRI. Which surgeons did you use? I just read an article of 2 surgeons in Ohio that are doing fabulous things.
-
vikster, would be cool to see you there. Will be a good day for both of us.
Goldie, my BS is Dr. Fanning and my PS is Dr. Moreira. Both women. I can't say enough great things about them. Seriously. I've spent a lot of time with Dr. Moreira and her adorable PA, Courtney, and they are ao loving and happy and fun. I just love them! And my breasts look great, by the way. Haha.

Hello ladies,
I'm scheduled for DIEP in a few weeks. I had bilat mastectomy in 2003 along with chemo. At that time, I chose the implant route. Diep was pretty new and not many doctors were performing it. I had several implants but never had much success at achieving symmetry. I actually lost count of the amount of surgeries I had. The one side has always been kind of flat. And, as the years go on, they are more and more uncomfortable and sometimes painful. Oh and one nipples is about an inch lower than the other one! Oye! LOL
So, I decided to bite the bullet and go for the DIEP. I'm having trouble finding what to expect in the hospital, but more importantly, what I should pack for the hospital and what I'll need when I get home. I'm planning on wearing a zippered jacket and stretchy pants home from the hospital but I was wondering if I would need to have some pajama bottoms to wear in the hospital. Also bringing my slip on sneakers to make walking the halls easy. Also, I've been wondering if I'll need some kind of light, stretch bra to wear. If so, I would have no idea what size to get.
I've tried searching through the threads but when I enter "DIEP Preparations" or anything like that, I get results that include every post with the word DIEP in it.
I'm hoping there's some kind of "stickied" resource thread that has a lot of this information.
Thanks,
Kathy

Dee, Goldie and everyone thanks for the reassurance on the separating abdomen. So far it has stopped spreading and is staying where it's at, I change the gauze three or four times a day depending on activity. I think I'll go to Costco this weekend and pick up the protein shake, for now I picked up boost from the local grocery store (to much sugar for my taste, but will work short term). For all who are going into this surgery, abdominal separation is scary to see, however, I was quickly reassured and comforted by this group and have no regrets and am happy I had the diep procedure.
Glad to hear everyone is doing well and strong happy thoughts to those who are working there way through the process.
-
Boobjrny, you will need very little for the hospital stay, you'll be in the hospital gown most of the time and won't want bottoms right off because of the drain tubes. Button up pajama tops and loose bottoms is what I lived in for awhile. Target, Sears, JC Penny's are good spots for button up PJ's. I found at home a wedge pillow with other pillows stacked on it and a couple under my knees was the best way for me to sleep. Tried sleeping on my side but find even 5wks out I still sleep with all the pillows. For shoes I just used comfy slippers and now when I leave the house I use flip flops or slip on shoes. I did have a soft zip up jacket and large basketball shorts for when I went out early on.
Good luck and best wishes on your upcoming procedure, the night or two before with nerves where far worse for me (anticipation) and it all melted away after and you just move forward with the healing process.
-
Boobjrny, I'm almost 3 weeks out from surgery. During my hospital stay the only thing I needed was my phone & charger. Some have suggested taking an extension cord too. The hospital provided everything else, lotions, chapstick, toothbrush, toothpaste, tissues, ect, but you can take your own personal items if you don't want to use theirs. I just finished chemo, so I didn't need anything for my hair. I wore the hospital gowns provided, bottoms would have been really inconvenient with the catheter and surgical drains. They provided a compression bra and belly band, I woke up with them on after surgery and they gave me a clean set before I left. By week two I was allowed to wear a soft bra. I'm actually wearing two bras, one a soft, stretchy front closing, the other a lightweight sports bra, the extra compression feels good.
You will need to think about how you want to handle the surgical drains. My cancer center gave me two sets of homemade pouches that are worn around the neck and hold the drains. I used one set in the shower. At home I discovered a housedress worn inside out with the drains in the big patch pockets worked well and bikini underwear are better than my usual granny panties.
You will want big comfy clothing for going home, nothing that you need to pull over your head.
Good luck!

I'm having DIEP on December 5, I had a bilateral gap flap on Aug 20 but my cancer side(left) had a partial failure and I had the flap removed last Friday. They were going to do a tummy tuck with my stage 2 anyway so my PS said he would just use the abdominal tissue to fix my left breast. How hard is the recovery for DIEP? I did pretty well after my hip flap and went back to work after 5 1/2 weeks. I'm a little nervous to do this all over again.
-
Gramof2, Sorry about your flap failure. That's a hard thing to deal with, but it sounds like they are going to fix you up. The tummy tuck you were planning to have anyway should feel pretty much the same as if you were having the diep originally from your tummy. Did that make any sense? Are you going to NOLA? I notice you live in Louisiana. I have a question, if it's not to personal. If you had the tummy to give for a diep, why did you do a hip flap first? Just curious. Usually, women have the hip flap if they don't have much tummy, or the tummy flap failed.
-
edukes - I vote for Breakthrough!
Sounds like you're moving forward. And feeling anxious is SO normal - if it wasn't we wouldn't all be here. There's nothing normal about BC, or chemo, or radiation, or having your tummy made into a fabulous pair of boobs - so don't expect your emotions to be normal either.
For me personally, I stopped trying to fight the anxiety 'cus that made it worse. I just acknowledged that it was there and took one little step at a time. A friend said ' Feel the fear and add some courage' so that's what I tried to do. (Sometimes I preferred 'Feel the fear and add some Ativin'). But I always felt like I was doing the right thing, even though it was scary - and that helped too.
-
edukes--sounds like your ready to face this thing head on ..go forward and kicks its ass. I think when you finally have a plan its a relief and you can just breath and let your doctors do thier thing.
I will say tho, I still have my little pity parties now and then and I was dx in May of 2013. I feel I am entitled to those and it makes me feel better. Especially since this whole thing just kinda sucks.
-
Goldie4040- I did go to NOLA, I live there. I didn't do a DIEP initially because I have a C-section scar and an appendectomy scar and rhey thought there would be scar tissue and not enough fat. So now only needing one side they believe there is enough to do 1 breast. I am fortunate to be in the care of one of the best centers around so they know best.
