Something someone posted on Facebook!
Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. If this isn't the right place Mods, my apologies. So, I was browsing thru facebook and there was something from the American Cancer Society. The headline was "Making Strides Against BC". Anyway one disturbing thing to me was that some man replied basically saying treatment is only provided for pharmaceuticals to make money. He said we shouldn't get mammograms, scans, etc. because of radiation exposure and then he said they should use thermography instead to show malignancies. He was saying good nutrition is the way to prevent/cure cancer. While it is important to eat right, I did that and I know of other's that eat right and are exercise nuts BUT we still got cancer!! Of course everyone has an opinion but it does scare me reading things like this, because it's like is this guy right? Do the treatments really ONLY prolong life, cause more problems, and not ever cure cancer? I know it's stupid to believe what some random guy wrote but it is scary to me and I just hope and pray the treatments we all have/had really work. Guess that's all we can do! Anyway, my rant for the day...

I just want to scream. Cancer seems to like, even prefer, healthy bodies!! -
STAY OFF FACEBOOK!!!

It takes a while to shut out idiots like that, but you will get the hang of it.

I would post a link but not sure how to. I was just browsing the newsfeed and I shouldn't have even clicked on it. Ugh! I know it's obviously not caused by diet or a lot of us wouldn't be on here, but the ignorance of people is crazy. Nobody should have to deal with this damn disease, whether we eat right or not, in my opinion! But the fact of the matter is cancer doesn't discriminate. The current treatments are the best we have at this point though. At least that's what the doctor's tell us. I just wish they'd find a cure already for all cancer's. We all do.
-
Guys like this really piss me off. Cancer does not discriminate. Rich and poor get it. Health nuts and couch potatoes. Vegans and meat-eaters. Drinkers and non-drinkers.
Sure, there are things you can do to lessen your chances, but that's all it does,,, lessen your chances,, not completely eliminate it. I'm sure we all know someone who smoked like a chimney and yet never got lung cancer. Granted smokers are MORE LIKELY to get lung cancer, but it is not a given.
Some of you have heard me say this before,, but when Linda McCartney died of breast cancer,, I knew then, that it could happen to anyone. A vegetarian who had all the money in the world for any treatment, and she still died of BC. It can happen to anyone.
Don't listen to the crazy people on Facebook. Block them. Upgrade your privacy settings to keep them from invading your feed as much as possible. Treatments do work. Some BC survivors have been with us for a long time. Some sadly pass away too soon. It's a crap shoot. Doctors don't know what will work for every single patient. I do believe that most of them are doing the very best they can with the current resources.
-
Me too when Linda McCartney died of BC I thought here are people with tons of money and famous and it killed her.
Paul would have done anything to save her life.

It seems the older I get, the more I meet people who have this, which I guess is true to statistics. I am 58. Recently, I went to a cooking demo in my city and my sister in law, who has had DCIS, and another friend, sat down, and it happened that the ladies on the other side of her, were people she knew, one had just had a mastectomy a week prior and right behind us was a lady I knew, who has also had DCSI. So within arms reach, there were 4 of us. So, later, I point that out to another sister in law and she says I know, it has to be in our food. Really? I admit, I am overweight and have been for many years but I see people on these boards that are personal trainers, vegans, etc and they are in the same boat as I am. I've also heard the comment that they have a cure for cancer but its better for the drug companies to keep it quiet. Yeah, well then how do all these super rich people not live?????????????
-
Yup. Cancer is a crap shoot, plain and simple.
And the more articles like this - that purport to know the cause of cancer - just makes it more o.k. to BLAME THE VICTIM!!!
Seriously - if anyone knew the exact cause of cancer, wouldn't you imagine there would also be knowledge of a cure?
Like Selena said, it takes a while, but you'll get the hang of shutting out the idiots.
-
I don't think there is an absolute cure out there. It would be too hard to keep it a secret. That is Nobel Prize winner stuff to find a cure. I think cancer has too many causes and too many details. ER+, ER- , etc etc. What will work for one will not work on another. The cause is also complicated. Yes, it could be in our food or environment, pesticides etc.But cancer has been around forever,, way before pesticides, and all that. Are they dormant cells in our bodies, that switch on for some reason? That might be the key,,, but who knows?

I forgot to mention that almost everyone in my local support group for young women is thin and active so weight has nothing to do with it. Also many of them are either vegetarians or eat very little meat and eat all organic so yeah it doesn't seem like diet plays much of a role in my opinion. I don't eat organic because my doctor told me that studies show it's not much healthier if at all. Please don't bash me for that. That's just what she told me. She also advised me not to eat organic because of my weak stomach/IBS since organic stuff contains bacteria. Organic is expensive also. I still try to eat healthy though. I ate healthy before diagnosis like I said. My diet slipped during treatment and for awhile after because of my bouts with C Diff because my Onc told me to eat what I felt like to avoid losing weight. Anyway it is a crap shoot. I pray for all of us.
Angelia you're right about more people being diagnosed. I was and still am shocked about how many of us under 40 are being diagnosed! It sucks no matter what age though.
-
No one will bash you for saying organic isn't healthier because it really isn't. Organically grown produce has the same nutrients that non-organic produce does. Organic just doesn't have the level of pesticides. Which is a reason to try to avoid non-organic produce if that's what you are trying to do. But, technically, it's truthful to say organic is not healthier.
I would love to eat totally organic (I grow my own herbs- and vegetables, but my garden isn't big enough for us to be self-sustaining), but - as you mentioned - the cost is prohibitive. It's ridiculous. My local grocery store was selling "organic" turkey for (Canadian) Thanksgiving. They were over $80.00 !!! Seriously? So, I - like you - do my best to eat healthfully, exercise and keep my weight down. Totally organic eating is out-of-the-question given the ridiculous prices.
I just wish that diet and exercise really could eliminate the risk for cancer.

I think everyone should do what works for them and I respect every body's choices but I'm in the minority here because I agree with the guy on facebook about big pharma making money on all of us. I think that's true. I think we're getting too many mammograms, too much chemo, radiation etc. That's why I didn't get my first mammo until this year. But that's how they found my stage 3 cancer so I guess I'm glad I did. I still wonder what would really happen if I didn't go through with the surgery and the chemo. I'm only doing it because my Chinese herbalist doctor said I had to. He said my cancer is too widespread to treat with alternative only. I agree with people who say that cancer doesn't discriminate. I've only used natural products and avoided the sun and eaten an organic raw food diet for 30 years and i'm a triathlete who runs 5 miles a day! I think there's an emotional part to cancer. I had a bad divorce about 10 years ago, my husband of 20 years left me for another woman and I haven't been the same since. I think all the pain I had because of my ex caused my cancer, overriding everything i do to keep my body healthy.
-
I think almost everyone would agree that the the pharma companies make too much much, even given the cost of bringing products to market. That's something we all would like to see changed. Stress is not good for anyone but to blame a stressful life event, which many of us will experience on directly causing bc is something I have trouble with. First of all, that's part of life and thus unavoidable. Secondly, it opens the door for blaming the victim and blaming ourselves.
-
I don't blame myself I blame my ex!
-
I respect your opinion Naturalhealing. I'm sorry that the asshole ex cheated on you! XOXO!
-
Naturalhealing...I'm like you. I blame my 1st husband. It took us being separated for over 20 years before he would agree to a divorce, yet he was living his life. Finally after getting divorced, I was diagnosed the first time 8 months after the divorce. I was so miserable all those years. Then my mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and during that time of my treatment and I had to take care of her with no help from my siblings...long story. It was hard because with me being sick and caring for my sweet mom for 5 years was too much. Then 3 years later after her death in 2013 I got diagnosed again. It had to be stress. Yet in between those horrible years in 2008 I married the love of my life and I thank God for him. He was my rock during those dark hours.
So all that to say...stress does play an important part in our health. Take care and I wish you the best!!!
-
Shorfi,
I agree extreme stress could effect the immune system. I think that was a major factor in my BC
-
I work with about 50 women, and I was one of those who ate right, didn't smoke, went to the Y five days a week, watched my weight. Took really good care of myself and whamo ....yup I get BC....really !!!!..Not that I would ever want anyone to get this ugly disease, but I seriously thought I was protecting myself from this. Damn I was mad.. You just never know..
I could have been having so much more fun !!!!
