Does a Mammogram Cause Pain Afterwards?

Hi.  My name is Ginger and I'm 28 yrs old.  I had ultrasounds and multiple mammograms of both breasts yesterday.  Last night and all day today I am having a burning pain throughout my right breast.  

There are two large (feels like grape size) lumps that I was told after the mammograms that it is actually all connected (not what I want to hear) with a spot of calcification on part of the lump (Right).  I have a stereotactic breast biopsy scheduled for tomorrow.  The other breast (Left) has 2 lumps that are more regular in shape completely different than the right breast and I will have a core needle biopsy next week.  

I know I had pain in my right breast off and on, but now that I am so aware of what was actually found in my right breast, I wonder if it's making me not ignore the pain anymore and this is pain associated with the mass or if this is pain associated with the mammogram.  This was the first time I had a mammogram, they took 8-10 images focusing on particular areas.  I feel I tolerated the mammogram very well, it was not very painful as I was expecting.  Today only the right breast is feeling a burning feeling.  Could this be from the Mammogram?  If so, why only the right breast?

    Dear Ginger, you must consider that the multiple mammograms you had was a lot for your breasts to take. Many women are very sore and bruised from just the single scan. The soreness is most likely from all the pressure of those multiple mammograms

    Try not to work yourself into a state of anxiety (not easy) and wait for the results of your biopsy tomorrow.

    Hello,

    Thank you for the reply.  I think you were right.  My breast was burning for a couple of days after the mammogram.  I know that the area of concern is very close to the nipple, which is a very sensitive area.  I had a stereotactic biopsy 3 days later so I guess I cannot tell for sure (since I'm having some pain as I heal from the biopsy), but I think once it's all healed I wont have that burning pain throughout my breast.

    I had a mammogram last year (I'm 32 but have them yearly, starting last year as I have 3 close relatives who had breast cancer.) I have another scheduled in two weeks as I have what they think are complex cysts with calcifications and irregular borders. Anyway back to your questions, yes it hurt like mad for me afterwards, I could not fit my breasts on the plates as they were too dense with not enough sag, I was on tiptoe hanging off the plates. My right breast swelled up by half a cup size for two weeks and my left just ached for a week, but not as bad as my right (my results were B9). I was just told the pain outweighed the risks of not having it and to just put up with it. It's not abnormal to be in pain afterwards or even to swell up.

    Thank you so much Autumn-Leaves!  That's really encouraging to hear that you had complex cysts with calcifications and it turned out to be B9!  Congratulations!  Can you tell me about the calcifications?  Did they tell you anything about the distribution/pattern of them?  Was the calcification in the cyst?  Or was it spread all around?  Did you have calcifications in only one breast or both?  Your response has really helped give me a little more hope for myself.  :)

    Question: For those who have had a stereotactic biopsy, how was your recovery? They seemed to do the biopsy in the worst spot (right behind my nipple at 0 O'clock position they said. Also they are larger than some (DD) and I have the highest density rating (probably at least partially due to being only 28 yrs old) so I think it must be a little more difficult with the cutting, etc. It is 2.5 weeks since the stereotactic biopsy and I am bruised the size of a softball still. All different colors, green, purple, blue, pink! I also seemed to have developed a hematoma. There is a large mass just under my nipple, it feels to be about 5 cm in diameter, which I hear is not uncommon to develop after a biopsy.

    Ginger, I'm feeling the same thing, burning, not pain. I didn't realise that my 3D scan was basically CAT scan. Then they took a bunch of additional images in 2D. I'm sorry that you are going thru this. Mine was uncertain after all that and they want a follow-up in 6 months. They can ultrasound me but I'm done with all the radiation. Burning seems not good.
