Seroma

Hi Ladies,

After a direct to implant reconstruction May 29th, I had an infection on the left side. It was treated and I got the all clear but about 3 weeks later, a small hole opened in the scar, leaking clear fluid. Never closed and after 7 weeks, we removed the implant. That was 10 days ago. Stitches were removed on Monday, everything was peachy until this morning, when I woke up in a pool of fluid. Fluid is not clear but tinted with blood, no signs of infection. It has been draining all day like crazy, through the same hole that reopened.

Will go to see my PS tomorrow but after seeing pictures, she said it was a seroma. Anybody had that problem? I just want the scar to close and my body to behave. How long do these things take to clear up?

Thankful for any advice!

Theda

I had a large seroma after 2nd drain was removed (no recon) a month post surgery.  There was never any drainage from it to the outside as what my Surgeon said is that a seroma is simply a 'pocket' where the layers do not re-seal to each other after surgery so serum collects in that pocket.  Just serum build up that had to be drained a few times.  You might want to get a culture done on the fluid from the area to be sure there is no infection present.   Or if there is, that the correct antibiotic is used.  Not every antibiotic works on every infection.

See your PS tomorrow and ask a lot of questions.

    Thanks Kicks!

My guess is that the open part of the scar was not really closed inside yet, I turned to that side in my sleep, putting pressure on it and it popped open again, so the fluid had a way to get out. But is was impressive, pouring out this afternoon. Yap, I think more antibiotics are in order. I don't think I have an infection because no redness, it is not swollen and I have no fever. Just very tired.

At least I have an awesome PS, she answers on Whatsapp in a few seconds and she feels so bad about this recon not working out as it should, even if it is not her fault.

Thanks again and have a nice evening!

I too had seromas (yes, plural).  I had one on each side, directly under my breasts, very close to where the drains exited.  They were very disconcerting! And popped up overnight.  They were about 3" in diameter and filled with a blood-tinged liquid.  They broke open quickly and healed rapidly.  Very little pain.  My doctor assured me they were not a serious concern, and he said they were probably a skin response to the adhesive tape around the drain incision. Anyway, hope you get through this part.  Its a little bump on the road!

I've been having trouble with a seroma also.  I have been having it drained 2 times a week for the last week and a half.  So far the most they drained at once so far was 180ml. (6 ounces).  I wish it would stop accumulating.  At least when they put the needle in to drain it, I can't feel it.   It's too bad they can't put something in that they can just open and drain the fluid out.

I had a Seroma that ran under my Mx incision and looked like a wave machine. I could tap it at one side and it would undulate like a waterbed. I had it drained once and I also had an infection, like some of the other posters here. My Surgeon told me it would just disappear on its own. It took a couple of months, but it did reabsorb.

My Mother had an open wound seroma and infection, after her radical Mx in '94, it had to be cleaned out daily by visiting nurses, but it finally closed up and the rest just reabsorbed.
