Without question I followed my gut to PRMA and I am so proud of myself that I did. It would have been simpler to stay in CA but I know the results would not have been the same. Sending you positive thoughts

I just met with my PS. He says that I'm making a very good decision by choosing the DIEP flap procedure. Next up, ct scan of the abdomen. The original surgery was scheduled for 12/2 but will have to change now that the procedure is different.... 8hrs. vs. the 3hrs. for implants. I'm hoping sooner rather than later though. He works with two other doctors and needs to make sure that they are available. He did mention that the pain wouldn't be as bad as my hysto because there will be no cutting of the muscle. That made me smile. He wanted to make sure that I was ok with being smaller, a B cup. Yesssssssssssss. I was a 38D prior and I am not interested in big boobs. NO THANK YOU. I'LL TAKE THE B's PLEASE. FINAL ANSWER!!!!
-
Congrats on the good news lonnie ~ glad you are so content with your decision. Here's hoping you get an early date for your surgery, keep us posted.
ChrisinPA ~ thinking of you and hoping all went well with the surgery and that recovery is as smooth as can be today.
Hope everyone is doing well on this Monday and the week ahead brings good things.

hi all. Week 4 post diep and feeling good. Happy to be back in a real bra and sleeping on my side again. Such relief. Although I did notice the diep side of the bra is much smaller than my other. Sigh... He promised me same size... It really is a whole cup size smaller.
Question for those who had stage 2. I am scheduled for 12/11. I would like to take kids to a nice island for Xmas vacation (ok.. They could care less... I want it). But I don't know the restrictions. Is it 4 weeks no water submersion again and weight restrictions? Don't want to waste a vacation on the beach sipping cocktails if I can't cool off in the water. Lol
-
Congrats on your date Lonnie...I am sure you, like me, will be so darn glad to get rid of those lousy expanders...talk about not being able to sleep comfortably. It was really hard to me to decide on the flap, but now that I gotten used to the idea, I can't wait until it is done.
sorry KB I can't help you with your restrictions, but sipping cocktails on a beach sounds wonderful !!
-
kb - personally, I would skip the island vacay. We went to a big reunion 6 weeks after stage 2 and I got a bit tired. Depends on what your doc has planned for Stage 2, but if there is a lowering of the ab incision or repositioning of the flap you will probably have water restrictions. Weight restrictions, too. Rest is the best thing for you, not the hasell of luggage, kids, etc. I am amazed that you are back in a real bra. At 4 weeks mine were still pretty swollen.

Does anyone have any tips for preventing or slowing down splitting of the abdomen? My incisions seem to be slowly coming open (widening and showing more flesh) it is not fully open yet (hopefully it won't) to require stuffing, is this normal or will it keep gitting bigger, Its been a little over 3 week since the procedure. Any help or advise is appriciated. I also have what my ps calls a wet scab under my right breast where the drain tube was and maybe a stich came out, using dressing but does not appear to be getting any better (or worse). Did anyone else have this, if so, any ideas on timeline for improvement? -
I also would like to be reminded of others' experiences with incision healing. I am 10 weeks out now, and my abdominal scar had been doing really well. Over the last two weeks, i seem to have some sore spots which have festered a bit--is this "spitting stitches"? My PS wasn't concerned and just told me to keep using antibiotic ointment. Hmmm.
-
I had lots of stitches that would not dissolve -- all around the crop circle on my right breast and a couple in my abdominal scar. After the offending stitches were removed, the crop circle healed pretty quickly although the scar is wide and thick all around the circle. My abdominal scar opened in one spot -- had a hole that I used microbial ointment and gauze on after cleaning with saline. That took weeks to close -- I think by about 13 or 14 weeks post surgery it was fully closed. I never had any infections, so was lucky that way. I'm not sure I could have done anything to prevent the issues.
I'm have revision surgery tomorrow -- fixing some of the scars (e.g. the wide one on my right side), doing some fat grafting on my left side where I have a flat spot and fixing my chunky dog ears at the end of my abdo incision. I was thinking on the drive home today that I have to pull out all of my home medical supplies and pack them (I'm staying with my parents for a few days as I live alone). That really brought it home that I'm having surgery again. While I'm looking forward to getting to the end of this process, I'm not really looking forward to the gauze and swelling, etc.
Take care everyone,
Ridley

Pzercher, your oinment statement got me thinking if I should be using somthing on my abdomen, I have read others who commented on using oinments. I asked my PS if I should be putting anything on the abdomen incisions and she said no, all doctors are different and i am trying to take a little advise from all and find what works best, did anyone else not use ointment on their incisions? what ointments did/are people using and when (how far out from surgery)? Using the abdominal binder 23/7 only removing to shower. Thank you. -
Ridley, thank you for your feedback, good luck on your upcoming procedure.
-
Ridley - I was just about to pm you to wish you luck tomorrow. Good luck! Hope all goes well with your chunky dog ears and revision.
I'm going in with Dr H on Tuesday for Nips, and one chunky dog ear . I was cleaning out a closet yesterday and I found a party bag of guaze and other supplies that I've been hanging onto for over a year. I am SO looking forward to getting rid of it for once and for all - so I know exactly how you feel.
However - you're one step closer to crossing that finish line. I'll be thinking of you tomorrow,
Janet
-
hi all. I'm 8 weeks out from diep surgery. Does anyone have a bad back prior to surgery? My back was feeling pretty good before surgery. I returned to work at week 5 and have had extreme back pain ever since. Anyone else have this problem? If so what helped you feel better?
-
Thanks Janet -- yes one more step.I was cleaning out closets on the weekend as well -- must be part of a pre-surgical procedure ritual!
Good luck on Tuesday with Dr. H!
Ridley
-
KB - check with your PS before you make reservations due to restrictions. I'm impressed you are sleeping on your side already. Way to go!
Presurgery has always meant cleaning for me. My closets are still in great shape. I will have to keep them that way because I'm not having more surgery to spur me on.
I asked my PS what reducing my still very large nips would involve and have decided different bras will be the answer over even an in-office procedure to make them smaller.

Hi Ladies, So here I sit recovering from my gallbladder surgery on Oct 3rd. Lots of muscle stood in the way of the laparoscopic method. I have 4 (at least one inch in length) incisions all over my swollen belly plus my new new belly button! I am praying that this is ny final surgery for 2014! The surgeon said the gallbladder was inflamed with stones so timing was perfect! I already feel better.
Tan72 and pzercher, I have not used any ointment on my belly scar. My PS did not mention it. Perhaps, the Drs want the scars to dry and heal ? My scar is still red and if I do anything - it will get "angry". You should reach out to PS if the scar is opening or oozing.
ChrisInPA: I stopped my arimidex in May. I have been without any oncologist since April. My initial consult with my new MO is 10/28. At this point, I am not sure what I will do if I have to resume. I was developing hair loss with receding hair line with other SE. Not for me.
JMB5: I'm hope your recovery is smooth!
Wishing everyone a wonderful night with some deep sleeps!

Tomorrow I have a post-op appointment with my PS. I'm really hoping she pulls the drain. My inner thighs are super sore from the liposuction. I can't believe how bruised they are. It's nasty. The best part of my day is when I can take off the compression and take a shower. 😊
Happy healing everyone.
-
Heading up for my pre-op tomorrow and phase 2A Thursday. PS is removing my dog ears, doing some lipo to fill out my left B cup breast which I lovingly refer to as "Mini-Me", removing the skin flap on the right side and also doing a lift and reduction on the right D cup. I'm hoping we can meet somewhere in the middle - maybe a C. Don't know what else PS has planned. Hoping the lipo gives me a waist so my pants stay up! She says she will let me spend the night at the hospital due to all the complications during my diep. I was the one whose BMX and DIEP lasted 25 hours so I'm a little apprehensive about going under again.
Lili. My hair thinned a little bit on Arimidex. It has been falling out tons since my diep. Anesthesia plus the stress on my body from surgery are most likely the culprits.
Sweetie. I have had back pain since Diep but worse is a pinched nerve in my neck. Chiropractor blames it on being in the same position too long.
-
Oh and she has already warned me i will have at least one drain. Damnit!
-
Sorry, I have been out of pocket the last few days. Spent some time with my grandson, but that took it all out of me.
Hope everybody is doing okay.
I wrote a long post about two days ago and it accidentally disappeared, which happens every so often on this thread...lol.
Jmb, how are you feeling after your stage 2b? Great I hope!!!!
sky, yeah for no barfing!!!!!! Hope the rest of your recovery goes just as well.
-
Thanks to all of you for your words of comfort and support!
Debiann, The drive wasn't enough to stay at the hotel next week. I just stayed the night before, and my family spent 2 days. I will see them at the end of the week when I am discharged.
Sky 78 - congrats on the procedure! Are you still admitted, or have you gone back home?
Meg - thank you for your kind words and support!
Surgery went as well as could be expected on Monday.. Just over 9 hours from what I have been told (flaps only, my BMX was in January). Lots of pain in my abdomen but the Foobs are adjusting well to the new tenants
Tomorrow (Wednesday) they are taking out/off all of the extraneous stuff: IV, heart monitor nodes, the ON-Q (abdominal pain management). blood clot compression for the legs, etc... All I will be left with will be 4 drains at that point. The drains don't really bother me. I'm more concerned about the cause of this extreme abdominal pain. I hope they can figure it out before they send me home on Friday, I get that they have timelines and prototcols but I really need this sorted.
Make it a great week everyone!

Hi all, recovering from my fix. Doctors opened and cleaned both sides. At NOLA for 2 days and got home Sunday night. Met with MO on Monday. Onco scores 10 and 13. MO wants to go straight to aromatase inhibitors. Wants to stop my ovaries if still producing. I just assumed tamoxifen and then other after menopause. I am 46 and am probably perimenopausal. Waiting on blood work to determine. Thrilled with my onco scores but now faced with making some big decisions about meds. Has anyone heard of stopping the ovaries and going straight to the aromatase inhibitors? MO says I can get it pulled at the time of my choice and have injections every 3 months to cease production until I am ready for surgery. YIKES another surgery. And If I agree, does anyone have an opinion as to which drug has the least side effects? I know this is the wrong forum but you all have been so great. Any input is GREATLY appreciated. These decisions are so stressful!!!!
-
Good to hear everything went well Chris! What's the abdominal pain like? Mine was a bizarre tightness, I jokingly asked the dr. If he sewed my belly button to my spine cause it felt like something was pulling it inward. Funny part was when he answered with all seriousness "yes thats step three of the procedure" He started laughing when my jaw dropped to the floor.
I'm a week ahead of you and not having much pain at all anymore. I didn't need to fill the percocet script, instead I'm taking ibuprophen 2-3 times a day. For me the worst part is the drains, especially the ones on top. I'm still really swollen on top too.
Wishing you a speedy recovery!
-
SMD--yes, I've heard of stopping the ovaries and going straight to AI's. Lots of women have written about it on the other forums. I know that there is benefit to AI's over Tamoxifen in ILC which is what I have. I don't know about IDC, but the news is probably changing daily. I was so overwhelmed at the time that I didn't have a strong opinion of AI's over Tamoxifen, but now I do feel that AI's are better at least for me. I was put into menopause by the chemo and later had ooph just to make sure no estrogen was being produced.

goldie, I'm feeling better. I had a post-op appointment today with my PS and she was excited with the results. My breasts look pretty great, and she did lipo on the inner thighs (which are so sore!) and the flanks and back area. I will be like a new woman in a few months when the swelling is gone!
I also got the abdominal drain removed! Yay!! She still wants me to walk bent over for 2 weeks because she pulled my tummy so tight. She was only able to lower the abdominal scar 2 cm, and I think it needed to be lowered more like 2 inches. She suggested laser hair removal if I don't like the end result. I need to check into getting that scheduled before the end of the year because of insurance. It will be sad when my deductible starts over. I have to say, I was amazed when she pulled all the steristrips off the incision. I felt like it was going to rip wide open, but all the stitches are under the skin, so you couldn't even see them. I think the scar even looked better. She also did a little lift on my right breast, and the incision was underneath, where you can't see it. Those stitches are also inside and can't be seen. I never cease to be in awe of all my brilliant PS can do.
-
jmb, sounds like you are really happy!!!! I am so glad. Yes, that inner thigh lipo is a killer. It passes quickly though. Your surgeon sounds like a dream come true. I will have my ab incision redone too. Not lowered just revised. I hope there are no issues this time. I can't do that again!!!! I wouldn't bother except where the incision opened made a large lump when it healed so it shows through bathing suit, panties, etc. NOT attractive.
Even if you can't get the laser hair removal in before the end of the year because your scar might be too fresh...there are so many places that do it cheaply now with coupons, etc. I have friends that have had their whole bodies done, it seems...lol
