Good morning:

I am an American living in Switzerland.   Was diagnosed in the States this past summer with LCIS so I am going to go the BMX route since in addition to the LCIS, I have a very strong family history of BC as well as having had chest radiation for Hodgkins as a child.

I found a PS I really like here.   He pioneered the DIEP flap in Europe so I am confident in his abilities.  My concern is having him do the whole procedure (BMX and reconstruction).   I know this is not the norm in the States and that is what is giving me my reservations.   He has also proposed leaving the areola but taking the nipple.   I would like to have the surgery here as opposed to the States since I have four children ages 5-16 and don't want to interrupt their lives too much.  Any thoughts????

    Hi Guineagirl,

I had my surgery at HUG (Geneva) and as far as my experience goes, in Switzerland it's the same as the US where you have a BS that does the MX, then the PS does the DIEP while you are still under. Maybe with LCIS it's different, but I would question why there will be no BS involved. The issue of sparing the nipple and/or areola should be at least partly the BS' decision too, on a BC basis. If I were you, I'd at least speak to a BS about your case, for reassurance if nothing else.
