So, NewGardener, does that mean I should be getting Lupron shots too?

Nicky,
I believe that Faslodex is intended for post-menopausal women. I tried to locate the "insert" that I took from the hospital after my first injection, but I can't find it anywhere. [That is my sign of denial. My medical records are not neatly filed like my business records.] I suppose your insert will be in French. It is hard enough to read in a native language; can't imagine reading it in a second one!
I would certainly ask your doctors about this, and I will continue to search for that piece of paper.

Dr. Google: http://www.faslodex.com/fulvestrant/who-could-tak...
The official Faslodex site also clearly states postmen women:
"If you are postmenopausal and...
- have been diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer and...
- your breast cancer is hormone receptor positive and...
- your cancer has spread after previous antiestrogen medicine (such as tamoxifen)...
...then you and your doctor may consider whether FASLODEX is right for you."
Hope this helps. *susan*

thanks Susan! That was my understanding too, that it was really for post menopause. Which is why, thanks to the information on the boards I can question it! You're right about everything in French, but luckily after 10 1/2 years here it's become second nature, so I'm ok in a second language. It's funny to watch medical staff though. Those who don't know me always approach me with a worried look. They're so relieved when they find I speak French!!
I'll be watching to see what you find; my appointment with my onco and first faslodex shot is 28th January, so I have a bit of time to gather information.

I am posting a question for my mother who is stage 4, ER+pr+ her-2 negative. She started Faslodex in Sept. Has had 4 shots the loading dose then 2 monthly doses. Since she started she has had extreme fatigue, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, extreme bone pain now on norco and dilaudid. She has lost 20 pounds. She can only manage to get up and move to the living room. 2 1/2 months ago she could work full time, work out, watch grandchildren and ride her horse. Now she is lucky to get out of bed.
So with hesitance I post this in the stage 4 only sight I have waited days but want some answers. She took her last shot 33 days ago. The side effects haven't gotten any better. So for those of u with bad side effects how long till the went away after stopping treatment. My mother said a/c dose dense was a walk in the park compared to how she feels now. I should add at her last scan 2 months ago she had 3 areas of bone mets and 2-3 areas of 4mm or smaller liver mets. (Forgive me if I can't remember if she has 2 or 3 liver mets)
Thanks for ur time. Happy holidays to all u strong ladies.
-
Sorry to hear about your mom. Maybe a talk with the onc is warranted. I've just started this treatment and other than slight fatigue I'm doing ok. FYI ther e is a thread specifically for caregivers of stage I'v You might find more answers over on that thread. Enjoy your holidays with your mom.

Daughter,
From your description, your mother sounds very sick. I don't recall anyone on this board having all of those symptoms at once as side effects from Faslodex. Maybe she is allergic to something in the injection. Perhaps something else is going on. You and your mother need to talk with her doctor. I hope you can get to the bottom of this and that she gets some relief.

Hi ladies. Have a quick question. Had a new infusion nurse yesterday and she scheduled my zometa every month and my faslodex every three weeks. Does this sound right? From what I understand after the load doses are complete it's once a month for both at the same time?
-
Maureen, I'm new to this too but I have the same understanding that you do--once the loading doses are done, I'll be getting zometa and faslodex every 28 days so it will always be on a Thursday. I'm sure some more experienced Fanny Pack members will be along soon to let us know if we're right.
-
Ladies,
Yes, the Faslodex is given every 28 days. I have no experience with Zometa.
Tina
-
one other story. I was getting my infusion yesterday and the woman sitting next to me is a 15 yr survivor of mbc. Wouldn't that be nice.
-
Maureen and Gem, when I was on zometa it was scheduled the same day as my faslodex...... Every four weeks. When my zometa began to affect my kidneys they placed me on xgeva, a very similar medicine, and that also occurs on the same day as faslodex. I'd ask why they are giving you treatment on different dates. First I've heard of that on this board.

Tree3,
When the Zometa began to affect your kidneys, did it show up by feeling kidney pain or did your labs start to get fussy? I think I'm heading down that road, as - for a few days after treatment - my kidneys ache.
Thanks,
Jennifer
-
Jennifer, it showed up in my lab work. And they immediately switched me to Xgeva, which is an easier treatment because it's a shot in the arm rather than a half hour drip. And it does the same. It does cause, at least for me, extreme constipation as a side effect, and I'm always working on that one.

Maureen, Faslodex is supposed to be given every 28 days (or sometimes 35 days). The label says once a month. I usually get Zometa at the same time. A three needle stick day.
Daughter -- you need to tell your Mom's docs. I haven't heard of side-effects like that from Faslodex. No one here has seen that. Everyone is different, of course, but if she's really suffering they should switch her to something not as toxic to her.
-
thank you again for your wise guidance. I put a confirmation call into the onc

I also am on a 28 day schedule of falsodex and xgeva. The se for me have only been another round of menopause, hot flashes and night sweats. and pain where the shot is administered. I did have horrible pain for awhile where I couldn't eat, and had difficulty in keeping food down.Got a reference to a pain specialist, was prescribed heavy duty pain killers, did 20 rounds of rads which helped, and acupuncture which helped a little. Once I got the pain under control I almost got my old self back.
@ Daughter talk to your Mom's Dr and try to get her pains eased she will probably get close to being her old self.
-
thanks everyone for ur response. We have had several talks with her onc, with the same response. She says that the issues my mom is having is side effects of faslodex. She has stopped her treatment but still feels horrible. The dr says it could take weeks or months for the drug to be out of her system. I wish u all the best. Thanks for ur time.

I'm so sorry, daughter ofstage4. I've never heard of anyone having such side effects of this drug. And a month after the last dose? Seems hard to imagine. I get a little bit of fatigue but it's gone in a day. Generally, I feel very well on this drug and it's been over two years.
Best of luck to your mom! She's so lucky to have you!

I am joining into this group. Been trying to read through some of the post so I can become more knowledgeable. I was diagnosed in Oct with mets to the left pelvis. I had sterotactic radiation and started Faslodex. I go tomorrow for my 3rd shot. So far it hasn't been too bad,, except for fatigue.

Hi Kandy, welcome! Glad the shots have been easy for you.
-
I went today for the 3rd shot. Last week I got a sore throat. I thought at first that I must be fixing to get a cold but so far, no cold. Tonight I all of a sudden wondered if Faslodex was causing it. I looked at my sheet and it is listed. Have any of you had problems with a sore throat. Now I am worried that they will take me off of it. Any thoughts?
-
Kandy, I've never had a sore throat from Faslodex. I know this because I have not had a sore throat the entire time I've been in treatment. Are you drinking plenty of liquids? I ask because anti-estrogens can dry up everything else, why not our throats?
Because Faslodex can be so effective, I doubt that your doctor will take you off it because you got a sore throat. Try the standard remedies and see how it goes.

I have had Faslodex three times and now onto monthly. From you guys said, it is a winner compared to some of these other mean drugs.
-
Vilma,
Faslodex has not been a difficult protocol for me, for which I am eternally grateful. We have a newer thread for Faslodex women here: Come join us.

Hello everyone,
I've been on
Faslodex for 14 months without any problems except for joint pain and being tired the few days after. The question and concern I have is I have a retinal separation in my L eye and it was getting better the last 3 weeks Has anyone ever had a problem with their eyes or with retinal detachment symptoms while on Faslodex? -
Hello everyone,
I have been on Faslodex for 14 months and last month I started getting floaters and flashing in my L eye. Does anyone know if Faslodex is the cause for retinal detachment symptoms?
Thank you,
Kelly
-
I developed floaters last year, but that's not unusual for someone who is post-menopausal. I think aging is the cause of floaters and that they would have occurred whether or not I was on Fasodex. I don't know if it could have anything to do with retinal detachment or any other more serious eye issues. You may want to give your retinologist information about how Faslodex works as an estrogen downregulator and get her/his input on whether it might have anything to do with your symptoms.

Thank you I am calling my oncologist and my eye surgeon tomorrow.
