You guys really hit the nail right on its head !  Here's another thing I don't like -- every year this time of year I get a call or two from breast cancer foundations asking for donations.  Well this year I finally took some time and explained why I will not be donating for research.  I received a call this week and after reading a reputable article that more than 80% of so-called donations for "research" do not actually go to "research" but to fill pockets of the CEO's and for other non-related reasons, I said I'm not donating and don't bother calling again so take me off your lists. The drug companies stand to lose a huge amount of money, as do doctors, if we can kick cancer of all types.  Nuff said  -- screw Pinktober

The only thing I've seen is a delivery truck for bottled water. Don't remember what brand. That's got a lot to do with bc, eh? I'll probably be your cellmate if anybody pushes the issue with me.

Firekracker - I took the survey but they did not ask for my income.  Are there two or more surveys going around --I wonder?  I like the idea that everyone sent letters to the president, but it's not surprising nothing happened.

I didn't get the income question either....but I am glad they are asking for our opinion. I hope I was able to communicate clearly and get a real picture of what we need.

I answered the survey - there was no income question.  BTW did the letter writing to the President actually ever take off or was it just discussed?  I'm in Canada so wouldn't send President letter anyway....

I  took the survey and  found it very cathartic to do so. Got more off my chest than I did with my mastectomy. It feels so darned good to finally have somebody ask me what I think of all the hoopla surrounding the find the cure activities. I applaud the moderators we have here. They protect our forum but they are not hesitant to address issues.

We hope you are all getting access to the survey with no problems. As well as posting the results in the next community newsletter, we will also post them on the boards for you all to see.

We're glad to hear that it has been a cathartic experience for you!

Anybody besides me getting those invitations at $25 a pop --from breast cancer docs/psychologists to attend seminars in the "pink" month?  Really?  What and where does this money go -- except to pay the speakers and it's as if we can do anything more than we've already done.  Haven't we paid enough dues already??  Rant over

I just received a letter for 25% discount on plastic surgery and it talked about "people like me, that had DIEP" and to get the word out to women who are hestitating to have the reconstruction. Kind of p's me off that they assume that women don't understand a) reconstruction is covered under insurance and b) that it is an easy piece of cake surgery. Never thinking that some women don't want reconstruction and that is what they have chosen. Chosen not out of ignorance. Surgery is never without risk.

Posted my second FB post re: F*@ktober this morning:

    Dear Facebook Family and Friends:

October (Breast Cancer Awareness Month) is just around the
corner, so I wanted to post this now.

In September, 2011, I was diagnosed with Invasive Breast
Cancer. I underwent a double mastectomy in December 2011, with final
reconstruction in August 2012. From the bottom of my heart, I thank all of you
who supported me on that path. Today there is no evidence of cancer in my body.
    God is good.

As many of you begin to participate in the Annual “Breast
Cancer Awareness” activities coming up, I just ask you to please consider these
    things:

    1.  Does the activity TRIVIALIZE breast cancer? NOT GOOD! This
    is a very serious issue.

    2.  Does the activity SEXUALIZE breast cancer? NOT GOOD! There
is nothing sexy about breast cancer.

    3.  Does the activity generate income to be donated to a reputable
organization that provides direct services to women in need? GREAT! Low income
patients need all the help they can get.

    4.  Does the activity generate income to be donated to a
reputable organization that funds research for a breast cancer CURE? GREAT! We
all have “awareness”… what we need is a CURE.

    5.  If you put a “Pinkwashed” product in your shopping cart,
have you checked to see exactly how much money from that sale is donated, and
the name of the organization where the proceeds are donated? GREAT! If it is
not stated, then the MANUFACTURER is making money off the misery of breast
cancer patients everywhere. NOT GOOD! Pink ribbon advertising is not enough.

Again, I thank you all so much for your love and support
when I was going through this. As ONE IN EIGHT women will be diagnosed with
breast cancer in their lifetimes, I also thank you on their behalf. xoxoxo

    ~ ~ ~ ~

I always want to be sensitive to those who love me and are just uneducated about the way they support breast cancer causes. I never want to publicly shame or embarrass those who love me. Their hearts are in the right place; I just need to get the info out to them. Last post was about MBC, this one is more about those stupid gimmicks that pop up everywhere.

That's great, Blessings.  I've been wanting to post something on my FB, too.  I may steal some of your talking points!  I want to include some "breast cancer facts," as well.  I don't fault people for being clueless because I was that way a year ago.  I feel I want to educate people.

Hi. I have been lurking here for a few months but weesa's post brought me out.  All of you are so funny!  I make it a point not to buy any product that use the pink ribbon crap to sell their stuff.  Today, I saw pink toilet paper.  Bleech.  Wiping for the cure, anyone?

Stage 3 here with ILC.  I was diagnosed back in 2004 and so far, so good.

Thanks for being here to all of you.

when I first started this journey back in 2010 I. Had no clue about all this pink crap

I was with one of my friends in Walmart and they had this huge display of tick tacks with the pink ribbon bright and bold

She asked one of the sales ppl WHERE IS THE MANAGER?

    He was brought over

She asked him in a very loud voice EXACTLY HOW MUCH GOES TOWARD RESEARCH?

He shrugged his shoulders and replied...prolly 2/3% ..

She said oh really...AND KNOCKED DOWN THE DISPLAY AND WE WALKED OUT.

Let's face it everyone is aware...

    How about finding the cure????

Jillian777, thanks for the laugh! Wiping for the cure?! I love it. I'm also stage III ILC just since July 2013. I hope I'm still here in 10 years.

Blessings2011, I re-posted your beautifully worded post on my own facebook page, changing the details to fit my circumstances.  Yes, it's plagiarism--but NO WAY could I write it more succinctly, more understandably, or more passionately!  Thank you!

I particularly like the way you haven't damned all pink, from pale blush to flamingo flame.  Let's not throw the pink baby out with the bath water.  If it's respectful, dignified, donates toward research for a cure, and supports low-income women, GREAT!

Just saw this in my local news tonight - Guy painted his house bright pink, to honor his grandmother and a friend that recently died of BC.  Neighbors are complaining of an eye sore.

Monis, I don't blame the neighbors for complaining. Let's hope he at least donates some money for research because this is a pretty empty gesture. Well meant, I'm sure, but what good does it do anyone?
