just thought I would introduce myself,  I am scheduled for bilateral DIEP October 20 2014  in Seattle.

I had my bilateral mastectomies in july of 2013.  I did a lot of research, and met with PS at least 4 times to decide best option of reconstruction for me and arrived at decision for DIEP back in March, but scheduled surgery for October, not wanting to limit my summer activities with recovering from surgery again.  so now surgery is less than 1 month away and is becoming more of a reality.  I feel good about the decision, and hope that all goes well. I have some back issues and hope the DIEP goes well without them needing to take any of my abdominal muscles as I did not want to lose any core strength.  wondering what recovery has been like for others regarding recovering from abdominal aspect of DIEP surgery.  also thanks to the person who did the summary of recovery issues, and will be prepared for 3-4 wk slump.

Norita, I was at Costco today and they have some button up pajama's right now.  You might want to look at those before you spend the money on Soma.  You might stain them, and Soma are so pricey.  At least with the cheap Costco ones you can toss them when you are all done with them and not feel to badly about it.

Kb33, I know it's no comfort to you, but 3 weeks seems to be a time when many of us have had down days. I'm not sure what it is about that particular time period. For me, I think I was just so darn tired of being tired. The care it takes to properly recover from DIEP is exhausting. You do more because you are sick of doing so little and that makes you hurt more and feel like doing less. You need to treat yourself somehow. You have come a long way! You will get through this week.

Do you still have your incentive spirometer? I didn't realize I wasn't breathing deeply enough until the stabbing pains came. Give it a try.

KB, Tbrady is so right.  3 weeks seems to be the worst week.  Usually, by week four your mood will lift along with your strength.  Hang in there.

I have two pair of Soma jammies and have worn them through surgeries and raging cellulitis hospitalizations.  They're soft, beautiful, make me feel pretty, and wash very well.  I haven't yet run into a stain that won't come out.  If you can, splurge a little on comfort and beauty.  Get a pedicure, too.  It helps.

Hi everyone, I had my Stage 2 surgery today. Dr did quite a bit- the left breast was lifted significantly and the right breast was both lifted and tucked in on the side to resolve some bulging. I also had a bulging area on the top of the right breast shaved down with lipo and the fat was transferred to the top of the left for better symmetry. Fat was also lipo'ed from my abdominal incision and across my abdomen to transfer to the top of the left breast as well. We are waiting on the nipples - we will see how all this work looks before creating the nipples, and if all looks good we could do them under local anasthetic. Total surgery time was around 2 hours. Coming out of anathesia was a little bumpy but coming home afterwards was great. I am wondering if I will be in a lot more pain tomorrow?? Did any stage 2ers find they were in more pain the day after?

Jersey glad stage 2 went well.

I had mine on aug 27. Coming out of anaesthesia also was unusually rough for me too. I did not have more pain day 2. I overdid it though. Needed more time with legs up resting. Tylenol was my friend.

Recovery went very well for me. The bruising looked worse than I felt. Compression with spanx really felt good. My thighs felt heavy amd boggy without. Stopped spanx at 2.5weeks. Started back rollerblading shortly after.

    Hope your recovery goes well!

thanks 1toC, glad to hear your recovery went so well and that you did not have more pain day 2. I am back in the ab binder (no thigh lipo). Forgot to mention I had my dog ears excised (removed) which did extend my ab incision on each side. The right side really hurt yesterday but not the left, go figure. I just took Advil - have percoset but would rather not take it because it makes me a bit woozy especially walking around. I didn't sleep much last night so will try to nap today.

Thanks for the tips on what to wear post surgery ladies, it makes such a difference to get this information so far in advance.

As far as pain pills definitely have a discussion with your Doc.  I don't do well with pain meds either, they typically nauseate me.  When I had my mastectomy we discovered that the hydrocodone worked better for me as opposed to the oxycodone; even though my surgeon explained they are essentially the same thing she recognizes that everyone tolerates them differently.  Also, I started with half a pill and that worked so I stayed on that track, it managed my pain well and didn't cause nausea so I know what I can tolerate.  Hopefully this all holds true for the DIEP surgery.

Kb33 - sorry to hear you are struggling, I hope that turns around quickly.  Keep us posted.

KB33 - sorry you have hit the slump, but it will pass. i know you want to do more but your body is healing. It will be better soon.

Norita  and Annaleise - glad you have your surgery dates.

JerseyMom - glad your stage 2 went well.

I wrote a timeline for my PS because there are so many things I've learned about what to take, wear, and do and expect when home after DIEP and stage 2. I thought it would help his DIEP patients. His patient manager asked if I would update it after I get my tattoos but they want to use it in the meantime because it was so thorough. It made me feel good that I could help others.

decided to chalk yesterday up to just a bad day :-).  Back at work today and got the 5 mile walk in and chest pain is gone.  I think my body is just reminding me I am working it.   Rather be sore from a hard workout then just a normal day... But greatful I am up and moving... And doing. Or all activities even if I am stiff, sore and slow... Lol. One of my 11 year old twins told me today... I still do more than other moms on the block even though I look like the bride of Frankenstein.  I had to laugh, kids are so darn honest.   Hahaha

Soma - My problem is that I couldn't bear anything to touch my skin. The Soma sleep shirt was very, very soft and seemed the most bearable. The stores all have clearance racks. It may not be your favorite fabric, but the softness is what made it worth the cost for me. They also have sleep bras that are just a whisper of support and the same soft fabric without compressing the flaps.

Stage 2 recovery - My recovery was swift after stage 2. I don't think you should expect a worsening Jerseymom. The lipo area was tender.

tlbrady - How long did you wait for stage 2 surgery? My DIEP was Sept 4 of this year. I would love to have the 2nd surgery before end of year because of insurance but not sure how long doctor wants to wait. And how long before you could wear a bra?

I had my mammo/sono today, they took several extra views, got nervous, then they told me all was OK. I looked at the PJ's at Costco and the patterns were just too crazy for me. I've never seen the Soma in a store so I'll have to go look.

I can't remember if I've said this but my original dx was in 2002, stage 3C, 9 positive nodes. I've been NED since my treatment completion in 2003, so think positive ladies!

Jerseymom, I have a question.  The fat that they liposuctioned from your side boob, they were able to use that to fill in the other boob?  I was hoping they could do that.  I have a similar issue with too much in one spot and I was hoping they could move it to another spot on the other side.

Norita, I know there is a Soma store in the outlet mall near my house, and they do have stores in some malls, and then there is always on line.  So glad your test results were clean!!!

hi Goldie, yes he used fat from the one boob and transferred to the other. It wasn't enough so he used more fat from my abdomen as well.

    It's me again sisters.

I try to come in here and read everything when I can and Im thinking of all of you. Two boys under 2 1/2 is pure crazy and I get no rest. And top it off they don't sleep thru the night.

Quick question- I have been so careful w my arms and reaching, and last night in my zombie state I reached over my head w my lymph node arm, heard a "pop" and was in pain. Now I cannot lift my arm above my shoulder and it hurts when I do it seems to hurt right outside of my armpit, right where the fold is.

I'm waiting for my ps to call me back, what do you think I did? My hubby goes back to work Mon and I am on my own. I told him I would rather live with one boob than have this pain when I move it and not being able to have range of motion. I am so upset. I was doing so well.

    Anyone have any idea?

Lipgloss, try not to panic.  I know that's easier said than done.  Hopefully, the PS will call you back soon and help you relax.

Jerseymom, thanks.  I hope they can do the same thing with me.  Nice to see you back.  Yes, lipo makes you so sore, but it passes fairly quickly.

Let your surgeon know about your pain since as the saying goes "that is why they are making the big bucks".  I am not sure where in the chest your pain is but you could have any number of things going on.  It isn't unusual, KB to have down days after all you have been through, you will feel better in time.  We all have had our days, that is for sure.

I had pain with breathing in deeply and my lungs were not fully expanding since I was short waisted and so much swelling in my tummy.  They even did a CT scan to make sure it wasn't anything and basically what I had done was started breathing too shallowly without realizing it so had to use that incentive spirometer and increase my activity to open things up better, then the pain went away.

Hoping you have a better day tomorrow.  !! Hang in there!

Kb33 - Hope you've turned a corner. Three seems to be a magical number when it come to recovery. Three days to feel alert, three weeks to turn a corner, and three months to feel like the the new version of the old you.

(Even if other aspects of life, 3 seems signifaicant. I just googled it and all sorts of things came up about mythology, and math, and the universe).

Anyway, I hope you're feeling better. Just have faith in the knowledge that there will be shit*y days on the road to the really good ones.

I'm still recovering from my hysterectomy, it's been two weeks. I feel like I still need more rest, but it's so hard when those around you are harassing you to get back to work.

My DH got sick the day we came home from the hospital and he just was feeling better a couple of days ago. So it was miserable around here. He was in a bad mood feeling unwell, I needed help, so you can see where this is going. He even went to the ER and all tests were negative so it must just be a bad virus. I can't help but be pissed off that the one time I was going to need him and he gets sick, perfect timing. I know it's not his fault he got sick, but I feel pretty shafted in the care department.

And now of course he expects me to get back to doing everything just as before, but my body isn't allowing too much right now. Oh well...

oh Sara that's awful. That reminds me, when I went into labor w my 8 month old, my hubby was sick at home w the flu and I had to have a c section without him. Thank God my mom came flying down the freeway an hour away to be with me.

It will be a month on the 27th since my surgery. I hope I have it in me.

lovesroses - I had my Stage 2 right at 12 weeks following Stage 1, which I think is just about the soonest mine would do it. As for a bra, my PS told me around 5 weeks after Stage 1 that I could wear any bra I wanted, including underwire, which I had no desire to do. After Stage 2, I was wearing a non-underwire bra just a week after surgery.

Stage 2b and tattoos at Vinnie's are scheduled! Insurance finally approved my stage 2b. I was able to get scheduled on Oct. 4th, and this will be my last surgery. I will have my scar lowered, and some fat grafting. Since the abdomen is still pretty tight, she will do some lipo in the upper abdomen, and hopefully that will be enough to loosen it up a bit to pull down. She said she will suture me the same way as stage 1, and I shouldn't need a drain. I'll need compression for 4 weeks because of the lipo. (Yuck!) The fat grafting will be in the left, radiated breast, which has one small spot that is kind of wonky from scar tissue. Stage 2a made it better, but I want to fix it a little better. I asked about having a slight reduction and lift in my right breast since it's a little bigger and saggier, but I don't think I want to deal with it. I would have a scar that goes from my nipple down to the breast fold, and I just don't think I want to deal with that recovery. Even in a bathing suit and bra, no one can tell except for me. I am going to ask my PS if she thinks it could become more noticeable as I get older and the breasts change, but right now, I think I'm going to pass on that part. I also got tattoos scheduled at Vinnie's for April 4th, which is over my kids' spring break. We're going to make it a family road trip and visit Washington DC since it's so close. Vinnie is traveling most of the month, so they got me in with Trent. Anyone go to him before? The guy who scheduled me, Richie, raved about him and said he believes he will be as famous as Vinnie in the breast cancer world some day. He said Vinnie wouldn't let him do it if he wasn't good. I had to put a $400 deposit down today (Ouch!) and pay the other half when I go in April. I'm super excited to have that scheduled, and a trip with my family gives me something to get excited about.

Hope all you new flappers are healing nicely. I hadn't been keeping up with the board the greatest, but I think of all of you often. This journey would have been so much harder without all of you. Hugs!
