Bone Mets or Arthritis?

Options

So, about 5 months ago I started having a kinked neck (hubby said I had it longer than that.) You know when you wake-up in the morning and you can only turn your head one way because you slept wrong on your pillow? well that's what it's like. I was diagnosed with early stage 1a cancer though I did have some LVI with isolated tumor cells. still considered node negative though. anyway, I still have the kinked neck. It hasn't gotten any worse or better and it only hurts when i turn my head a certain way (to the left.) my husband has suffered from a kinked neck nearly as long as me and my poor sister has one thats been going on for a year!  i also have had "bouts" of kinked neck off and on for years that do eventually go away. the last time i had it was about 3 years ago and it seemed to last forever. irritated i know, by my looking at a computer monitor every day. anyway, i asked my oncologist for a bone scan cause ive been so freaked out about bone mets. she told me it would be rare if i had it but that she would schedule one for me anyway. well, the bone scan lit up on my neck and as you can imagine i was/am freaked out. the radiologist's nurse told me she asked the radiologist if she could tell me that he had said it looked like degenerative disease (arthritis. i am 41.) they asked me to have an xray. the xray was perfectly normal and didn't show anything at all. no mets and no arthritis. my oncologist called to tell me the radiologist report said "likely degenerative" but couldn't guarantee as I have a history of breast cancer. she called back about a week later and spoke in person to a different radiologist (the one who originally did my report was on vacation) and this radiologist recommended i have an MRI to be sure as if it was arthritis it would have showed up on the xray. well i googled early arthritis and it does not always show up on an xray but does on a bone scan. so not sure about that. anyway, i told her i didn't want any more testing done and i believed it to be arthritis. still freaked out about the whole thing but not enough to put myself through anymore testing. has anyone else experienced anything like this? other than the pain in my neck when i turn my head a certain way, (and hearing grinding sounds of bone on bone typical arthritis symptom)  im feeling great (well not really great having tamoxifen side effects. grrr.) it has been nearly 6 months of memorable neck kink that has not gotten any worse nor have i had any "new symptoms" congruent to bone mets. also my blood tests were perfectly normal. anyone have a positive bone scan and negative x-ray???? would love feedback. anything to help relieve my mind. :( Thank you!!!

I have degenerative disc disease and have for years; I am 46.  15 years ago I had a plate and screws put in my neck for severe damage to my C spine.  My lower back is also very bad.  Mine does not always show up on X-rays, but does on my scans.  Change of weather causes me much pain and stiffness - which I am really feeling now with the beginning of fall and cooler weather.  Femara, Arimidex, and Tamoxifen all made my symptoms worse.  (I am currently on a six month drug vacation, MO approved, for this very reason.).   I have had numerous cortisone shots in my neck from a pain clinic over the years.  Aleve or Motrin, taken regularly during a bad spell, also helps a bit.  I also use a heating pad, for only 15 minutes at a time for some relief.  The medicated over the counter pain patches/stick on pads also help (Ben Gay  type med).  I also have experimented with several pillows, and need one that provides extra support under my neck, and wake up with fewer pains.  Give these things a try.  Hoping you find some relief.  I think you are on the right track with it being arthritis.

I too have severed degenerative disc disease and each of my cervical discs are herniated and also have osteophytes growing on them; and am in my 40's too . I get injections in my neck and shoulders of lidocaine and prednisone. I see a neurosurgeons office that has a physiatrist on staff who does the injections under fleuroscope. They work wonders and last about 4 months.  I'd suggest you may want to check in to that type of treatment. Its been a huge relief .

I too have degenerative disc disease.  Bayou we sound like twins!  I have had surgery, have titanium plate/screws as well.  My neck is so bad but it was before I began an AI.  However, I do think that it has gotten a lot worse since I started on Arimidex.  I have had multiple steroid injections, an ablation, countless different meds.  I take gabapentin and now and on a fentanyl patch.  Sleep is so difficult because I can rarely get comfortable.  I have gone through so many pillows!  I also am best friends with my heating pad.   My pain specialist wants me to consider a neurotransmitter next.  Maine, I understand the worry but please know it is very unlikely mets.  Only your doctors can tell you that of course, but it sure sounds like you are beginning to have some neck problems from something else.  Mine also shows nothing on x-ray and my blood work tests normal for inflammation.  My doctor think mine is likely nerve damage.  BTW I am currently taking a short break from the Arimidex as it does seem to help.  Talk to your doctors and hopefully they can help you with a course of treatment.

Bevin I wish those injections had helped me.  You are really lucky to get four months relief from them.  Bravo!

Hi Ladies! Thanks so very much for your replies (and I hope to hear from others, too.) Did any of you (besides Bayou) have your arthritis show up on bone scans and not on xrays? just from googling around mine sounds like it could be in my cervical facet joints. I hear alot of popping and grinding when i turn my neck. Anyone taking any supplements that help? How about a chiropractor? Has that been helpful. wondering if they will touch me where I have a history of cancer??? Cold, damp day in Maine and so neck feels even worse. bah! always something.

Hi Matsgirl, be careful when you Google only because it is important not to try to diagnose yourself.  Popping and grinding is the result of air between the joints and is not uncommon.  I am not sure about supplements, again your doctor may be able to help you decide.  A chiropractor may help and having BC will not affect that.  I had PT for awhile and that also helped some as well as neck exercises.  Not everyone responds the same to any given treatment.  I certainly would consider seeing an orthopedist if it gets any worse.  They have different tools that might be able to provide some relief.  I understand not wanting to take any more tests!   BayouBabe  offered some good suggestions as well.  I did not have a bone scan on my neck, so I can't answer that question.  I have had neck problems for years and I know how that 'kink' feels.  Try applying the heat or the topical meds and see if that helps.  I do love my heating pad!  Also they have those heat patches you can buy OTC.  They make them for the neck and I have used those as well.  Good luck and try not to worry.  I know how hard that is.  :)  Hugs!

matsgirl thanks, I love  this quote too.  With so many really strong women fighting this disease, I figured it was appropriate.

How is your neck feeling?  I hope you find something to help when it flares up again.  I hate my neck!  I keep asking my surgeon for a neck transplant.  As soon as they develop that, of course!  :)

Dear Girlie, I had a lot of problems with turning my head, stiff neck etc. about 15 years ago. One of the reasons I lift free weights. They keep the area limber plus give me extra strength in that area. Works like a charm.

Plus, they sculpt the entire area which is also important as we get older. Which reminds me. I haven't lifted in a few days due to a business trip and can feel that I need to. Or perhaps it was the lake swimming. - Claire

Janis, started to see a chiropractor. He also thinks it's arthritis - but of course, one can never rule out mets once you've been diagnosed with BC. Stupid C word! anyway, he cracked me all up literally and i go back friday. it seemed to really help. i also started to do yoga and hope that will ease some of my mental stress.

Claire, what kind of free weight exercises are you doing for your neck. I have some free weights here and would love to know what works best for you!

Thanks for your support in this! Would love to hear from other folks. xo

Claire! my neck was sooo stiff and really bothering me yesterday. the chiropractor i am seeing wants me to "take it easy" until i am through the corrective stage - however! i was feeling so stiff and rotten i remembered your advice and started doing some free weight exercises with my dumbbells - you are RIGHT it did work like a charm and felt almost immediately better. i did make alot of creaking noises. am thinking taking it easy is just making everything worse. anyway! thanks for the advice. any specific exercise you recommend that helps your neck??? thank you.
