Starting Chemo October 2014
Hello
I start 12 weeks of Chemo (Taxol) in October. My Dr. told me Taxol is pretty mild, so I am wondering if I will lose my hair or not. I will be doing weekly injections along with Herceptin. I will be getting my port the same day of my first treatment.
What kinds of items are you packing in your chemo bag?

I'm scheduled for mid October-definitely Herceptin-not sure of chemo cocktail as I had 2 tumors-1 was HER2+ the other ER+ and PR+. Everyone is different re hair loss but I was told mine will fall out so I am going for a wig on 9/30. Got a script from my MD for a "skull prosthesis." My port is installed-good decision u r making-will save u a lot of stress. I am nervous re nausea and having bathroom issues. Most concerned about neuropathy. That seems to be the biggest topic on the boards. Good luck
-
Hi April8, nice to meet you. Good for you already having a wig appointment. I think I am going to buy a head scarf so if I wake up one morning and its bad, I can wear that to work for a few days.
Good luck to you.

Hi Kerensa and April, I'll be starting AC+T chemo on October 2nd and would like to join you on this board. I was diagnosed WAY back in May and wasn't initially anticipating chemo, but with a positive node and an intermediate oncotype, I'm joining the club.
I haven't thought about a chemo bag. However, I saw a good friend yesterday at a BBQ who had been treated for colon cancer a couple of years ago and she said I needed to bring ear buds and music to avoid overhearing the depressing conversations of other patients in the chemo room. I haven't used my Ipod in forever and don't have a tablet or anything... I was just hoping to read!
I'm getting my skull prosthesis prescription on Sept 30, when I meet with my my doctor next. I doubt I'll have time to get out to any wig shops, but I've been searching online and watching reviews on youtube. Focusing my research on wigs is distracting me from researching chemo side effects anyway...I did, however, order some hats already. They are designed for chemo patients so they provide a lot of coverage over the hairline and nape. I live in the Northeast and I want to be warm walking my kindergartner to school every morning. It's already getting chilly in the morning.
Speaking of kids, do either of you have young kids? If so, have you thought about what you'll be telling them? I have a 5 year old and a 3 year old. I'm not sure how they'll react to the baldness.
-
hey hyphencollins,
Welcome
I have 2 kids ages 14 & 2 both girls. My oldest loves wearing wigs so I asked her if she wanted to share (just joking) and she told me that wasn't funny. I told her it was better to laugh about than be upset about. She's taking it harder than I am. As for my 2 year old, she has just reached the stage of wanting to brush my hair so it might be a little hard to explain where my hair went. I do not plan on getting a wig, just wearing hats and scarves since I'm only doing 12 weeks.
My plan was also to read while there, I might buy audio books then so not to have to listen to stories. I havnt learned anything yet about what we are supposed to pack in our chemo bags or things that you shouldn't do while on chemo. I hope to get that info very soon.

Hi,
I will be starting Taxol (12 weeks) and Herceptin (every 21 days for one year) on September 29th so I too would like to join the October list. I will be getting my port put in this Thursday and I am scared to death! If they put you totally asleep it would be different!
I wish we all do well, with few S/E's and kick this monster to the curb!
Hope and Love~Nancy

Hi Nancy
Welcome to the group.
You are going to do great with getting your port. I am getting my port the day of my first chemo treatment.
I also wish us all luck with little to no SE's!
-
Hi All,
I start chemo, 6 treatments, 3 weeks apart, on October 1. Hope I can join the group. I look forward to hearing how it goes with you hyphencollins since we start our journey on the same day, and thanks for the info on the earbuds. I don't know if I have to have a port, but I'll be thinking of you, Nancy. In fact, I have to go in for all the scans and MRIs on Monday. I haven't had any of those yet.
Good luck and many prayers to and for all of us.

I will also be starting chemo October 1st. Port surgery scheduled for tomorrow. Starting with dense dose of Adriamycin/Cytocan (every 14 days for 4 treatments) then 12 weeks of Taxol. Rads to follow all of this mess. I'm a 45 year old mommy of five kiddos. (23,22,20,17,12) and have the most wonderful hubby on the planet. I am an RN and do home health care IV infusions and wound care. Still cannot believe this is happening....feel like I'm walking around in some crazy nightmare

Welcome Speedcat & Prncesmommy
what do you ladies plan to pack in your chemo bag? I have read a few things online and have a general idea. I will be going straight from work to my chemo sessions.
I agree prncesmommy, it still doesn't really seem real.
I am 39 and married. My husband has been great so far. I work at a law firm as a gofer
-
I'm trying to stay away from denial and I know this thing won't beat me. I'm confused about what I might need in a chemo bag. I go for an education session Thursday so I think I'll ask what my nurse/trainer has to suggest, too. I'm 59 years old, no kids, 2 cats and a great DH. I was a Clinical Social Worker in a facility for the Developmentally Disabled and retired now, but working part time in the family business. I don't know about ya'll (yes I'm Southern), but I've done a lot of reading about the chemo drugs, side effects, etc. and I think I get more scared by the second. Glad that I'm in decent health, other than the BC.
-
Speedcat you are going to do great! I think sometimes we can provide ourselves with too much knowledge
Were here for you though. We will all get through this and kick cancers butt!
-
I am 60 years old and this is my 2nd breast cancer diagnosis. My first cancer was eight years ago. I will begin Taxotere and carboplatin on October 1st, 6 treatments given every three weeks and Herceptin every week for 18 weeks followed by 34 weeks of Herceptin given every three weeks.
The chemo I received eight years ago kicked my rear but I got through it and I have felt great for the last seven years since the treatment ended. All chemo has lots of side effects but none of us will have all of the possible side effects. Lets not let the overwhelming amount of information out there scare us. Good luck to all of us!!
.

One more thing--my chemo bag will have my Kindle, a journal or tablet to write down what is in each infusion and keep track of how long it takes (the first time will take longer), a small blanket/throw and pillow (I just like having my own) Breathsaver-type
lozenges, chapstick, unscented hand lotion, Purell sanitizer or handwipes, Saltines or animal crax, sugar free gum, and bottled water.Music was mentioned in an earlier post. Any other ideas?
-
Welcome Speedcat, Prncesmommy, and Effeur! Just wanted to pop on quickly and say hello. I got my dental cleaning earlier this week and will be doing an EKG on Friday (my doctor wants to make sure there are no surprise underlying heart conditions before she gives me Adriamycin).
Speedcat -- Just wanted to let you know that I'm a social worker as well.
Kerensa -- I can't believe you will be going from work to chemo... what a trooper!
Wishing everyone a good night...
-
Good Morning,
Raining something awful here. Hope everyone had a good night. Surprisingly I tend to sleep well. Ya'll are right about too much info. efeuer thanks for something on a chemo bag. My fully charged Kindle was definitely going to be there. hyphencollins I wasn't able to get a dental cleaning scheduled until the end of Oct. Is that going to prove problematic?
Everyone have a great day and see ya later.
-
Speedcat, ask your Oncologist about dental cleaning. My dentist will not do dental work during chemo unless they have to for risk of infection I believe she said. Doesn't hurt to just ask.
It's raining here too, but I live in Seattle, so that's normal, haha. I'm not ready for fall yet and would like another few weeks of warm weather myself.
Efeuer, sorry you are doing this all over again hun. hugs to you!
Hyphencollins, we will see how long I last at work
I get my scheduled start day for chemo today, now that I got the all clear from thyroid Dr.
I hope everyone has a great day
-
Kerensa,
Thanks for the input. I called my dentist this morning and told them my situation. I just got a call and will get my dental cleaning this afternoon. Thank goodness. This is a new dentist for me so I have to have X-Rays too. I've been putting off the dentist. This should be fun . See ya later.

Port surgery went well. I have asthma and had a horrible time when I woke up from general anesthesia last time but the twilight anesthesia was great. I'm surprised that so far my pain is minimal. I had not really considered my chemo bag yet, but I am definitely bringing earbuds, don't want to be a captive audience to someone telling horror stories. My best friend brought my a hug bag of yarn and some cute patterns for hats, so I plan to spend my time knitting , I have appt with MO the day before chemo so I'm sure She will give me some hints about what to bring. I have not been working as I am finding it very hard to focus and since I'm a nurse good chance I could catch some nasty bug with compromised immune system on chemo.
Speedcat: happy to hear they worked you in at dentist. 😬
-
Hello ladies! I start chemo next Fri 10/3 with 4 treatments every 3 weeks. I was originally slated for taxol but the Onco changed it to Taxotere and Cytoxan. He told me I'd most likely lose my hair between day 14-17. Just happens to be around my birthday, oh what a birthday present, huh?
-
Hi Kerensa just thought I'd mention we are neighbouring cities! Oh and I hate the rain. I know living in WA almost all of my life you'd think I'd be use to it by now, but I'm not.
-
Glad to hear your surgery went well Prncesmommy.
Welcome Mulligan!
Speedcat- glad to hear you got your dental appt. My onco had said the same thing as Kerensa had.
Kerensa- did you get your start date?
-
Evening Everyone,
Thanks Kerensa and Hyphencollins. Dental cleaning done and all is well though a little deeper cleaning may be needed in some areas. She said she had worked with Onco that said it was okay if it was closer to the end of the 3 weeks. Not absolutely necessary, think I'll wait. Mulligan that's the first thing my MO told me, you'll lose your hair. That doesn't bother me near as much as losing my eyebrows! Oh well. Have a good night everyone.
-
hi Mulligan! We sure are close. Where are you doing treatment? I'm at Swedish first hill downtown. And welcome to the group!
Hyphencollins, I did get my date. Looks like I start on the 8th.
Speedcat, glad you were able to get your cleaning
Prncsmommy, so glad your surgery went well Hun
-
Kerensa thanks, I'm at Swedish Issaquah!
-
starting chemo October 9. What a roller coaster. Today was a rough day trying to get hold of clinic for ct scan and bone scan supposed to be done tomorrow but have to wait until next Tuesday. Just when I have a pretty decent day I get kicked in the butt. Wish I could just take a bunch of sleeping pills and wake up when it is all over ... don't worry not talking suicide. Just want to sip thinking for a while. Work right now helps. I'm an elementary school counselor. The other staff and the kids have been great. I just hope I can keep working at least some between treatments. At least I'll get out of recess and cafeteria duty. I feel for what my husband is going to be going through.
-
I hope all of you ladies have a great weekend! Remember to find time to relax if you can
Welcome okkim! I try my best to keep my mind focused on other things and things going on with my kids or hubby rather than think about all the appointments I have coming up. It works pretty good for me most of the time. I also like to read funny books from other cancer survivors, lets me know I can do this. And it keeps you laughing with the funny stories they tell also. I just finished one called: Chemo induced insanity. It was short and pretty funny. It made me laugh out loud a lot!
-
Thanks kerensa. I went ahead and downloaded it. I know I'll have plenty of time to read.
You're right about keeping your mind active and thinking about other things. I'm really counting on being able to work in between treatments, every two weeks. I'm an elementary school counselor and I love my kids. I need to keep busy even if it is hard to focus at times. I think I have chemo brain already and I haven't even started yet. Lol.
-
Hello Ladies, I guess I'll be joining you for chemo in October. My MO hasn't been informed yet that I've agreed to his treatment plan, think I'll keep my secret for just a couple more days then I'll have to let that ball start rolling. I'm told my regimen isn't grueling, that the wonder meds available will readily control the nausea and vomiting. Only thing my MO will guarantee is that I will lose my hair and that it will grow back My hair has the least of my concern. Fatigue, they say, will be my nemesis. Same with the radiation tx, a little skin irritation and a bunch of fatigue. Doesn't sound too bad. I got this!
-
Hi everyone and welcome okkim. I've found work helps as well. It is definitely distracting. Of course I'm saying that as I currently feel physically fine...it may be a different story during tx! Thankfully my work has been great - supportive and flexible.
I had my echocardiogram today, will meet with my doctor to sign consents Tuesday and get scripts for all the meds to manage SEs and then will get started in less than 1 week.
Hope everyone has some nice plans for the weekend...
-
Hi becca! Was typing and missed your post. Welcome! What regimen will you be on?
